Hey everyone, I have some papaver somniferum (giganteum or however it's spelled) growing in my backyard for ornamental purposes. They are about in the 1 month + phase. They're growing pretty well, but the stalks seem to not be able to hold themselves up. Is that normal? I'm uploading a video to youtube to show my situation. I have some chicken wire (or whatever it's called, I forget the name) that my friend gave me, I also have some bamboo supports, and they're both depicted in the video. Any suggestions, or will the stalks turn themselves upright? I'm thinking I may have to put the bamboo poles down and tie the stems gently to the bamboo, but I don't have any clue.

Also, I believe I have some bugs eating my plants, any solutions? Any other tips that you can give me are appreciated and welcomed.

Thanks ~Papaown

EDIT: At 0:34, the light green plant isn't papaver, I forget what it actually is. I believe it was mint.

^And also for future reference, even with 1080p the quality of this video is horrendous compared to the file on my desktop 8) Youtube sure does seem to destroy the quality lol.

Looks like slug activity. There area many methods to deterring those, it doesnt really look like your problem is so bad. Just build some supports like string bean triangles if you want to, but you dont have to. I'd just let em grow and see what comes of it, making adjustments after the first harvest.

Thank you for your info Crashing. Will the pods still be ok if I leave them tangled and non supported? I'm supposing that would be a bad idea and I should use the chicken wire, or should I go and pick up some string bean triangles that you suggested?

Well it looks like you have them pretty well blocked from wind. In an open field, they grow straight up like tulips but they are weak-stemmed for you for whatever reason. Could be anything. Id put some stakes in the ground and if the plants need them, they'll use them. Whatever is easier, just anything they can grab.

indoor or outdoor? as some have mentioned previously, plants need to be exposed to wind as they grow to develop strong stalks. if your plants have developed with weak stalks and have trouble standing up on their own, tethering them to a nearby stake will give them a substrate on which to grow.

It's outdoor, made a neat little video showing the grow lol, should be able to see it's outdoor :) They are exposed to wind, but down in South U.S. there seems to not be too much :\ Do you think the chicken wire will be enough or should I use the bamboo poles and tie them with a string?

i've always used the pole and string method on plants with weak stalks. i wasn't working with poppies at the time but i've seen the technique applied to all kinds of garden plants.

Ok, sweet, thanks. Do you think they would be fine if I didn't put the stalks upright? Or do you think that would be a stupid idea? Just seems like a lot of work if the plants will still grow correctly with them tangled and not upright. But, I'm willing to do whatever it takes, I've gone this far lol.

Bump :P Need to get this figured out tonight, if there isn't any more input I may just put the bamboo sticks out and start tying the stems.

Err dude, those aren't opium poppies, or any other Papaver species for that matter...

I'm surprised no one else has pointed this out?!

I didn't think that they looked like any papaver species either but wasn't positive. That's probably why the stalks aren't thicker and holding the plants upright!

I think maybe the reason no one has pointed it out is maybe they are not looking at the other pics and actually opening the video but if you look at these other pics and the video they don't look anything like poppy plants. Sorry to ruin it for you OP. And I could be wrong but seriously, I don't think that is what you have growing here.

Did you plant these from seeds? If so, where did you get the seeds? Or did you find them growing already?

Yep, P. somniferum stems are much thicker and fleshier than that. Opium poppies never need support.

The leaves are completely the wrong size, shape and colour too. Google 'P. somniferum' and compare the leaves!

Sorry OP :(
