Need some advice on valium and oxy

I have been suffering from a bad back injury that happened about 2 years ago.

Up until today, I was just getting prescribed codine, 30mg codine and 500mg paracetamol per pill, I have managed it pretty well in my opinion up to recently, i was taking 4 pills twice a day but not all the time, I realize the paracetamol is considered high in these doses but after 2 years I never had a problem with it or any side effects that I could notice.

I also have been doing the occaisional CWE to get rid of the extra shit and just get the pure codine.

Also I would only do it for like 10 days or 2 weeks at a time max and then take a couple weeks break, That way I felt that i was on top of it and never really suffered withdrawals on the off weeks.

My back pain is pretty much constant but most of the time it feels like a bad bruise that wont go away, probably a background level of 2 out of 10 on the pain scale.

When I wasn't taking it for pain relief but just to get a nice high off it I was taking 4x30mg codines and 3 X 60mg pseudoephedrines, I would only do this dose once a day and not redose for a couple of days because I noticed a tolerance build up to the pseudo and don't see the point of re dosing if the the effects are not satisfying, also I would only do the pseudo/codine combo once every couple of months and only on and off for a week and then leave it alone.

BUT !!!, recently the codine usage has been creeping up and i decided it was time to scale the whole thing down with a view to stopping completely, too much of a good thing and all that....

Then last weekend I had a real bad relapse on the back injury, got full on muscle spasms and my neck and shoulders locked up, very similar to the original injury pain. like someone stabbing me in the spine with a red hot knife.

So I went to the Dr today and explained that I was in a lot of pain, have had 3 hours sleep in 48 hours because the pain keeps me awake and I needed some relief.

I took 120mg of codine yesterday and it didn't ease the pain hardly at all.

But I also did what i thought was the right thing and told him I was worried about my codine usage and didn't want another huge script for the 30's as I just throw them down like m&m's when I'm in pain.

So he agreed that the codine was a problem and he appreciated my honesty about it and would not prescribe it for me this time, all good so far right ?

So this is what he gave me a script for.....

Valium, 50 pills X 10mg

Oxycontin - (Oxycodone hydrochloride) 20 pills x 10mg with a 1 repeat script for the same amount if I need it.

He said it was a one off and he would not likely prescribe this again for me and explained all about the dangers of addiction to it etc....

(Funnily enough he didn't mention anything about addiction to the valium, but just said it would help with the muscle spasms.)

But as I am in so much pain and don't want the codine, he said it would help get me through a couple of weeks while the back inflammation settled down.

So now I don't know about doses or what I should be watching out for re danger levels for O/D or addiction.

I have no desire to get a valium habit, I watched my mum spin out on it in the seventies and I know that it's a slippery slope, but I have to take it this week just to stop the bloody spasms.

The recommended dose he gave me was to take 3 valiums a day if needed.

The oxycodone I have never had before and have no idea what to expect from it, I took 2 pills tonight (20mg total) and it has stood on the pain, I also took 2 valiums and that has also loosened everything up.

BUT !!!, i have a history of addiction, mainly with pot and with the codine, but I had a serious speed problem a few years ago and I am aware that i have an addictive personality so I'm trying to keep this shit together and not let it get out of hand.

So I guess what i am looking for is general advice from anyone who has had a similar run in with codine and oxycodone for long term chronic pain management.

The last thing I need is a fucking serious opiate problem or a valium addiction.

but I am in serious pain so I'm trying to find a sensible way to minimize any potential harm and abuse.

Sorry to have rambled on so much but I needed to explain the history and the situation.

I do acid once in a while and also shrooms occasionally but this is totally under control.

I'm not taking anything else and I don't drink alcohol.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated guys.

Thanks in advance.

So you have been using codeine for 2 years now, on and off? And your normal dose is around 120 mg? Your doctor prescribed you 20 oxycodone 10 mg tabs, and they are extended-release (OxyContin) or immediate release? Sorry to ask all these questions, but your post is kind of hard to read. What is exactly is your question? You want to avoid diazepam dependence, and opiate addiction while still managing the pain?

yeh i've been using codine for 2 years, more on than off, but i do insist on the off periods just to feel like im in some kind of control, but like i said it's been creeping up. dose crept up from 120mg to 240mg a day

The oxy's i got prescribed are extended release (oxycontin)

yes I want to avoid diazepam dependence and opiate addiction while still managing the pain.

Okay, well I think because you have experience with opiates, have only been prescribed a small supply of OxyContin, and are in real pain, it is okay to use them to manage the pain, though I am not sure how well one 10 mg tab would as you do have some tolerance to opiates. You said the 2 OxyContin along with the 2 Valium you took tonight helped with the pain? I would say use the OxyContin (20 mg every 12 hours as needed), and the Valium as needed, but doubt you would need up to 30 mg Valium per day. I'd take 5 mg of Valium as needed, if I were you. As long as you aren't taking the Valium everyday for more than a few weeks, dependence isn't likely to develop, and if it does Valium is pretty easy to taper down on compared to other benzos. If you're that worried about becoming dependent on the Valium, it doesn't seem completely neccesary to use all of that Valium as the OxyContin should help with the pain. Also, use Ibuprofen as that will help with the pain. You have taken breaks from your codeine use before, so you will likely be able to come off the OxyContin fine as you won't be on it for too long.

Ok thanks heaps for that advice alex, much appreciated, I just wanted to be sure as the oxy is a new substance to me and the valium I wasnt sure about when addiction/dependence starts to be a problem.

thanks again brother
