Heroin Need Help/Advice with shortened needles

I believe using a tourniquet isn't necessary if you are going to be able to use a short needle in the first place.

My advice to you is to use a steeper angle. Sometimes I use up to 30° to 45° angle on some veins. Whereas, on others, I will prefer to use < 30°.

Some people will find greater ease in using one tourniquet over the other - we don't need to be jumping on people's cases here. :)

I agree with Captain, try using a steeper angle. I also find that on some of the deeper veins you may need to use an angle between 30 and 45 degrees whereas the same vein you may be able to get away with a 10 to 20 degree angle using a 1/2" needle. 5/16" work fine, they just take some adjusting to, just like any other equipment (bigger syringes, needle gauges, etc...) I personally really like the shorts, they're harder to make mistakes with, at least I find. Good luck amigo, let us know how it goes!
