Hi,
I have been taking Suboxone 16mg a day for a few years now. I woke up the other day with horrendous tooth pain that 1 gram of Tylenol was unable to touch. I tried Ibuprofen too. They work to a certain degree but pain is still there. I scheduled a dentist appointment for tomorrow and notified my Suboxone doctor of the situation. I told him I stopped taking the Suboxone in case I need legit pain meds. He didn't offer much help except to be sure to make that appointment tomorrow. I plan on being up front and honest with my dentist about stopping the Suboxone so that he might be able to call me in some pain meds. I honestly want to call the dentist now and request pain medication but don't want to look like a drug seeker. That is one of my big fears for some reason. I have no intention to abuse or get high off of them, I just want them to do their job and make the pain go away. Being on Suboxone and having any sort of surgery with pain do not mix well. Any suggestions? Isn't there a medication out there that can break through the suboxone (especially if you've ceased use for a few days)?

I just want to add an update here in case anyone is searching and came across this. As soon as I started feeling the tooth pain from my fractured tooth, I discontinued the Suboxone. I let my Doctor know that I did this and after 2 days of being Suboxone free, he wrote me a prescription with plenty of pain pills to get me through until I have the procedure done tomorrow and for healing after the extraction. I have an Addiction Specialist writing me my Suboxone Rx and was surprised that protocol is to actually go through him for any pain needs. I asked the Dentist, Endodontist, and the Dental Surgeon and all were scared to call me in anything in when they saw I was on controlled substances already. With my new found faith in a God, I am making it through without abusing the pills that he called in for me. I have always been extra honest with that Doctor and have actually had a slip before that he never judged me for. This has actually been a big fear of mine: being on Suboxone while having pain flare ups and its great to know that my Doctor is compassionate enough to get me out of pain and out of withdrawal. Those two days of stopping Suboxone cold turkey were not easy. Coming off of 16mg a day is no joke and was very emotional. When this episode is over and go back on Suboxone, I am considering lowering the dose. I now see how much Suboxone helps me to function. I don't like being in this situation and am actually looking forward to getting back on my opiate maintenance! In the past, I would have just bought a bunch of Kratom extract or other opiates I could find and handle it on my own. It pays off to be honest and do things the right way.
