I have actually NOT seen this in the media, but the US Dept. of Justice has officially shut doun the National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC). Either they realized that they have too many agencies doing the same thing so going under and letting other agencies try to handle things or they're starting to give (I doubt it, but maybe.) From the USDOJ website:

On June 15, 2012, the National Drug Intelligence Center will close. This web site will no longer be maintained. The documents that are currently on this site may contain dated information. They remain available to provide access to historical materials.

I don't think this is as good as you think. Their Nation Drug Threat Assessments were pretty interesting. It doesn't mean they're going to stop gathering intelligence. DEA/FBI are probably going to do the same thing NDIC did, just won't release it publicly. IMO it's almost like when they took down Microgram.

Yeah, I think it's just a result of budget cuts and they realized that having the DEA, ONDCP, and NDIC all doing pretty much the same thing was redundant. I can't see much reason for having more than a single agency for a single purpose, except maybe to keep each other in check so one agency dosent become too powerful. Unfortunately though, I don't think that thats what they were thinking. Either way I I can't say I'm sad to see them go.
