Party drug naphyrone faces ban
By James Lyons 8/07/2010
Legal party drug naphyrone, sold as NRG1, is to be outlawed on the advice of Government experts.
The white powder, which sells for as little as £12 a gram and is also marketed as Rave and Energy-1, will be made a Class B substance, carrying a five-year jail sentence for possession. (14 years for dealing)
The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs found it is similar to mephedrone, or meow, meow - banned after being linked to 26 deaths.
Home Office minister James Brokenshire said: "We are taking immediate action to ban the importation of naphyrone, which has no legitimate uses, from today.
"We will consider the advice in full and respond very shortly."
MDAI, a substance which replicates the effects of ecstasy, is the next "legal high" in line to be banned.
It was developed as an antidepressant at an American university and sold legally over the internet.
