Are the bands of the Emo scene more Indie Rock? Do people in this scene consider themselves to be rockers or hipsters? Or simply Emo?

I attended a Emo rock scene event recently and I was taken back how heavy Metal sounding the tracks played were.

That and all the punters knew all the words off by heart to the music being played by the DJ.

Is there a commercial Emo rock band scene and a less Radio friendly sub-genre of emo bands.

What genre is Fallout Boy and My chemical romance?

Emo is wide-ranging as a genre (and subculture), but depending on who you ask, you might get a different answer, of course, for what they considered to be emo.

I consider Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, and Jimmy Eat World to be the catalyst for the emo/screamo bands of the 2000s.

As far as less radio-friendly bands are concerned, I might recommend American Football, Mineral, Foxing, The Appleseed Cast, Braid.
