OWEN SOUND, Ont. — Police don't know what it is or if it's illegal.

They aren't sure how much of it is out there.

But what they do know is that at least four people have showed up at the hospital within a 24-hour period suffering from extreme paranoia, vivid hallucinations and thoughts of killing themselves after smoking or injecting a mysterious brown powder that was confiscated during a drug bust Wednesday night.

The substance has caused people to see fire or lightning that's not there. Others fear someone is coming after them.

"Our worry is we've never seen that kind of effect on that number of users in such a short amount of time," Det.-Sgt. Mark Kielb said.

Police sent the substance to a laboratory for testing Thursday to determine what it's made of and if it's illegal.

In the meantime, they have issued a warning to the public to stay away from it.

"Use of this drug is very dangerous," Kielb said.

yeah i have no idea what the shit they're taking either

but it does surprise me people are willing to take drugs without really knowing anything about them ? i guess you make mistakes and can end up learning ' the difficult way '

If anyone ends up seeing an update to this story, feel free to post it. I'm curious as to what substance is causing this.

Initially, I worried it was going to be mxe due to the other article placing fear of mxe gaining attention in my mind.

Is that a little known cathinone? ^ I keep seeing new ones on the RC market that, after researching, seem more and more unpleasant to me. I'm not really a fan of those types of stims though. I have ADD so I do need dextroamphetamine as it works though I don't take it and I enjoy MDMA every 3 months on average. I did like bk-MDMA but there were a lot of them that I had the opportunity to obtain but I chose not to.

Could be one of the new PCPs. That's what I was thinking as well. It is not MXE. Datura-like hallucinations sound more like extreme stim use or 3/4-MEO-PCP.

I'm leaning more towards anything though, because this article is lacking in detail on all accounts.

If it was a stim, they would have mentioned it. The fact that they have absolutely no idea what it is (legal or not), leads me to believe this, above any tryptamines and phenethylamines as well.

My bad I meant MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine).

WOT:

It's a neurotoxic precursor for MPPP (Desmethylprodine), an opioid (an analog of Pethidine / Demerol) which has been illegally manufactured in the past (apparently it has 70% potency of morphine). MPTP can be accidentally produced during the illicit manufacture of the aforementioned MPPP.

Apparently the first time you ingest it, you're fucked (meaning permanent symptoms of Parkinson's Disease). Symptoms can include psychiatric disturbances such as anxiety, depression, severe cognitive impairment, etc. In 1982, seven - way too young for age related onset of Parkinson's Disease - people in Santa Clara County, California were diagnosed with Parkinsonism after having used MPPP contaminated with MPTP. One of the doctors involved in treatment documented the case in a book he authored 13 years later, "The Case of the Frozen Addicts."

More Info on:

Highly unlikely - imo - that the "mystery drug" is MPTP adulterated MPPP - but it was worth mentioning - at least it seemed like a good idea at the time - for those who've never heard/read about it.

The over/under on how many different substances will be mentioned in this thread is 47.5. That's straight from Vegas.
