Hi,

Ok so I've read a lot on this subject and I know there are a few threads with similar topics, but I wanted to see if I can get some advice for my specific problem. If this is been done much before, tell me and I'll go ask somewhere else.

Long story short(er):

I've never been a huge stoner , I'm 20 now, smoking weed was a week-end activity for me (not even every week-end), or during vacation more often, but I never smoked consistently up until about a year ago. I've always been a slightly above average student and a fast learner.
I started my studies in university in mechanical engineering about two years ago, it being a very tough thing to study and feeling a lot of pressure from my father meant for me that at some point I started having stress induced sleeping problems.

My weed consumption here was still occasional until I started using it to get to sleep (I never had sleeping issues, and it was only to get to sleep rather then to stay asleep). It worked well for me, it would free my mind before I went to bed (btw I NEVER smoked during the day, and had absolutely no desire to do so) and I didn't feel bad the day after, being able to study all day and do my work as usual.
While I was consuming weed regularly during the week too, I wasn't that stupid not to notice that it definitely is NOT a good thing or a healthy thing to do, that's why I always had some days where I would just take a break, I fell asleep fine, not great but I definitely got my sleep.

Fast forward to this january when I took a trip to Thailand with a friend of mine and for 4 weeks didn't have any weed during that time, but it went fine and I got to sleep normally (I think this had a lot to do with the fact that I was on vacation and not stessed as usual). I also didn't find a huge difference in my mental state when I didn't smoke. I also had no withdrawal symptoms at all, except for being scared in the beginning that I wouldn't sleep well for those 4 weeks (which didn't happen).

Now it's June and I have exams coming up in 6 weeks or so. I told myself I wanted to stop smoking to get to sleep when the vacation starts and I begin studying. I did this and had massive problems falling asleep (lying in bed for hours at end and feeling anxiety because I knew I had to study the next day (usually about six hours a day) thus putting even more pressure on me falling asleep.
I finally just started again and could to my work relaxed the next day without the tension of not being able to fall asleep in the evening. It's weird that it worked when I was in Thailand but as soon as I'm back with all the stress from school and all I can't seem to fall asleep without it.

Now I really want to stop smoking in the evenings (not in general though) , I don't know how much evidence there is on it making you dumber and all but I think I can feel some difference, even though it's not much that I could tell between a day after smoking the night before or a day after not smoking the night before. I also want to avoid having to smoke the night before my exams, that would not be benefitial.

I read that it increases melatonin levels by 4000% and that could very well be the main problem to my sleeping disorder, also because it feels just like jet-lag, I lie in bed drift off with my thoughts but just don't fall asleep.
I've managed to cope with the anxiety i have because of the upcoming exams but I still didn't get to sleep last night.

Now the thing i actually need feed-back and suggestions is: What would be the most efficient and affective way to get back into a normal sleep rhythm and quit using marijuana to get to sleep? Has anyone had any experience with this?

I have 3mg melatonin pills which I'm going to try out tonight and my plan until now is if they work I'll use them to get into a normal sleep cycle (that combined with exercise, I jog almost every day for about an hour, and healthy eating) and then stop using them when I'm assured that I can get to sleep without weed and I have a normal sleep cycle again.

Like I already stated I read up a lot on this subject but decided I just need some feed-back from people who might have already overcome a similar problem as mine or can give me some constructive feed-back on what they think about my situation. I appreciate any feed-back I can get on this subject.

Sorry the text was so long hope it wasn't too boring.

Yours

Sleep issues are common. Please use the search engine, and check out the mega threads. These probably pertain best to you:

Negative Side Effects
Sleep Change
[Mega] Cannabis Tolerance

PS: You have to take melatonin regularly for it to have any effect. I am also under the belief that that 4000% figure is utter bullshit.

Check out the threads I posted. Try your questions there or search for people who have had similar problems, you are not alone.
