Driving up the dirt road.
All by myself.
Pull over to "my spot".
I turn off my car.
Sudden, deafening silence.
I have to pull my fleece blanket from my backseat.
Opening the door,
A gust of chilled air tousles my hair.
I'm thankful for that blanket now.
I pull myself from my car,
Keeping the door unlocked.
I feel safe in this place.
I lie across the hood of my car,
The cooling engine still hot enough to warm my backside.
I throw the blanket across my chilled body,
Wrapping it around and up to my neck.
I look up.
The black sky stretches across forever.
Tiny sparkling stars are dotted across the black canvas.
I close my eyes as the wind burns my nose with the chill in the air.
I open my eyes to the sky,
And I smile.
There is absolute silence.
No cars or crickets,
No animals rustling through the grass.
Just me.
On top of sloping hills,
On the road less traveled.
My eyes wander to a lonely cloud;
The only one in the dark sky.
I watch as it drifts across the landscape and wonder where it'll go,
Where it came from,
And if it'll disappear into nothing.
I start looking for constellations,
Even though I haven't a clue what I'm looking for
I just love to look at the twinkling lights
That are scattered about the sky so perfectly.
I can't get over the fact that the sky goes on forever.
There's no end to it.
The stars just go on and on in total perfection with the universe.
I look around in my loneliness,
Only hearing my breath and heartbeat,
And the chilled breeze brushing through the trees and grass.
I'm alone,
Just like the single cloud that floated overheard minutes ago.
And I'm okay with that.
Gazing into that midnight sky gave me peace,
If only for that one moment.
And I was happy.
