my one problem with psychedelics.

no one is advocating heavy/over-the-top drug use. I don't think most people here (on a forum devoted to harm reduction) would say that an 8-9 month streak of heavy psychedelic use is very healthy or stable. moderation is key for any meditative/therapeutic tool!

I'm not saying that you can't go deep into psychedelia without benefits, I'd be guilty of hypocrisy if I tried to say that. I'm just saying when starting out, it's good to be moderate in your psychedelic drug use to gauge how it affects your development and mentality - whether positively or negatively - and weight out the possible benefits and risks. Then, once you've assessed that the experience is indeed a positive one, by all means go all out as you see fit, as long as you stay careful.

True. I got into psychedelics to try and cope with the death of a loved one and I found heavy use right from the start to be the best way. It developed into a lot less heavy use once I'd come to terms with the grief tho.

^ Interesting. My longtime companion/soul-mate of 20 years died 3/31/2001 3 weeks after starting to experience symptoms of an illness. Totally destroyed my universe and made me feel i was living in a nightmare. His best friend and psychedelic co-adventurer from all the way back in high school got me to have a series of mushroom and other combination trips. I think it helped... he said I went from being ashen and acting like I was dead too to at least seeming alive and lively again. I certainly experienced grief still for a long time, but I also had experiences of "Larger Mind" and utterly inexplicable Synchronicities that were very much like "messages from the overmind" that were the beginning at least of recovery.

OK I realize this is somewhat "off topic" but I am not real sure this topic has much of a well-defined topic anyway... seems pretty amorphous to begin with so, here goes:

Here's one tale:

I have had what seemed like incontrovertible episodes of what could only be called telepathy, not to mention EXTREMELY unlikely synchronicity while on psychedelics. Also contact with the dead. A very close friend and I once did a stiff dose of 3g of dried shrooms a couple weeks after my partner of 20 years passed away rather suddenly due to AIDS-related illness... we had a Sarah Brightman DVD on the TV, and during the ancient and essentially mystical song Scarborough Fair we both felt this REALLY intense sense of his presence in the room like a thick mental sentient fog... the cats were both acting REALLY weird and freaked during this time as well... cowering on the floor, ears back, looking up and around frantically, back hair bristling. Thing is we didn't mention this undeniable and palpable feeling of a paranormal presence in the room to each other till weeks later, and confirmed we both felt exactly the same way (note - Brightman's is a devastatingly touching rendition of that song... and later upon looking up its origins found that it goes back to possibly as early as then1400s... and is believed to be a metaphor about people's feelings after loosing loved ones to plague and such.... that gave me a chill when I read that... and also alot of reassuring feelings about "this" really not being "all there is" to our being.)

Soooo, anyway, as a result I am not averse to ideas of paranormal experience on psychedelics. Not saying there was REAL paranormality... but the EXPERIENCE of it, that was, while actually somewhat weird and spooky, also in the long run quite therapeutic with respect to my/our loss.

ASIDE:

Sarah Brightman is wonderful. I absolutely adore her.

In particular, her rendition of the classic English ballad, Scarborough Fair... made famous by Simon & Garfinkle. According to Wikipedia, it has been traced back as far as 1670 or even earlier... there is a fascinating history and info on the meaning of the song here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarborough_Fair

It was the lines relating to herbs and gardens that got to me initially... but I was quite amazed when I learned it went back to the middle ages and related probably to the Black Plague, which made it even more significant. But I knew none of this when I teared up hearing Sarah perform it so beautifully... just the power of her voice and feeling somehow communicated something so profound and touching... almost like this ancient song is carrying the spirits of those we have lost, and she is channeling all of that with her voice.

Well here is her video of it from her La Luna concert... well worth seeing that entire show, it is out on DVD.

(NOTE: for best sound and image quality, and smooth playback, select 480P from resolution to lower right of video frame after it starts to play, pause, rewind, wait till pale red buffering indicator fills the progress bar - and then press PLAY)

Sarah might just be a real-life Goddess of some kind, haha! She just radiates something very special... not to mention that voice!

I'm sorry to hear about your partner :( I'm glad to hear that you've since recovered from what I imagine must be inordinate grief. I've never had to deal with loss on such a level... only apathy and emptiness to an extreme degree.

I think we can conclude that psychedelia, in the right hands, can help cope with many challenging life occurrences.
