"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
THANKS TO ITS ubiquity in eggnog and other holiday concoctions, nutmeg is one of the spices most commonly associated with drinking. But even now that the last ladleful of the season has been poured, nutmeg refuses to leave the party. In fact, the spice is enjoying something of a revival in the craft-cocktail world, with small nutmeg graters now fairly common in better bars. More and more drinks—especially vintage punches and their offshoots—call for a dusting of nutmeg the way others call for a lemon twist.

This is welcome news, and not only because nutmeg brings a pleasant intricacy to many drinks (in particular, it lends an earthiness to frivolous citrus). The rediscovery of nutmeg also brings a touch of history with it, including one rather unexpected detour.

Peruse accounts of European drinking in the 18th and 19th centuries, and before long you’ll envision barkeeps standing with nutmeg graters at hand, eager to enliven some potion. The tale of how nutmeg got from the East Indies to Europe has been told well and often: the wars for the Spice Islands, the domination of the nutmeg trade by the Dutch, and later, the rise of a competing industry in the West Indies.

But in doing some research recently, I learned something new: nutmeg will fuck you up.

As it turns out, nutmeg contains a psychoactive element called myristicin, whose chemical structure shares similarities with mescaline, amphetamine, and ecstasy. A Dictionary of Hallucinations—let us pause for a moment to give thanks that we live in a world where such a reference exists—notes that nutmeg has been “reported to mediate visual, auditory, tactile, and kinaesthetic hallucinations (notably the sensation of floating).” This is not breaking news: the Benedictine abbess Hildegard of Bingen noted the mind-altering effects of nutmeg all the way back in the 12th century.

Nutmeg is about as recreational as Haldol to me, i.e. not at all. I wish these OMG NUTMEG!!! articles would go away.

^ for real. They also seem to try to present the idea that nutmeg produces a desirable effect and don't explain that any drug user with any common sense would never use it.

I had some friends that tried it in their freshman year of high school, they told me they wish they had never done it and it was a horrible experience.

I love nutmeg.
It's my favorite combo with bud and opiates, but don't do it often because I believe it's worse for your liver than alcohol. Look it up.

Grind up the whole seeds, and brew it into a little water then warm milk (for the oils and to mask taste), with brown sugar. It will fuck you sideways. Feels like a mix of MDA and some sort of 2c-x crossed wtih cannabis to me.
-Also, a little cinnamon doesn't hurt to further mask the taste, and plus then you're adding safrole :\

I'll see your as-recreational-as-haldol and raise you one as-recreational-as-the-flu-while-drunk.
Any kid who is stupid enough to do this kind of deserves to die. The fact that it tastes like donkey ass should be enough that the plant says "I'm bad for you", you don't need to go eating it and dying to know it's not fun.

Once again, you guys are preparing it wrong. Nutmeg is very a very potent "super-cannabis" psychedelic when used correctly, but far from often mind you. There were many wars fought over this stuff for a reason.

i made the mistake of trying this shit once. felt like a train hit me. i was off my ass with blood red eyes for like a day, nasty hangover effect too. id imagine it to be like datura. felt like a mix of eating a ton of weed and benedryl or something. i guess some people can get down with it but some ppl get down on huffing duster, so ymmv

in Malcolx X's autobiography he got high on nutmeg in jail.

"Stirred into a glass of cold water, a penny matchbox full of nutmeg had the kick of three or four reefers."

That's in the "Autobiography of Malcolm X".

I read it ages ago and that part (especially) has always stuck in my mind.

Yeah, the mistake people make with nutmeg is underestimating it and taking too much. I won't touch it again because when I was a dumb-ass in high school and had no experience with drugs at all I tried it and overdosed all over the place. I looked up the dosage on Erowid (about 13g at the time) but completely ignored the info in favor of what my dumb-ass friends told me (don't worry about it man) and accepted a 25g dose... and followed it with two more of roughly the same quantity.

Colors got brighter and shapes started crawling and warping, then my perception of positive and negative shapes switched, then I completely lost touch with reality. My friends got me home and I lay in my bed for a few hours. I woke up completely dehydrated and hotter than shit because I had forgotten to open my window and turn on my fan. I threw up in the hall on the way to the bathroom. My friends cleaned it up and got me some drinking water and I lay on the bathroom floor shaking and sweating and throwing up for the next few hours. I honestly remember only bits and pieces of it, but I do remember it feeling extremely intense and being completely disoriented the whole time. I felt like shit the next day.

I had rough experiences in college later on, but nothing that really compared to OD-ing on nutmeg (maybe a bad shroom trip, but that is a whole different kind of hell). I think there is a real possibility that the dose I took could have killed me. I wish I had taken a small dose initially and scaled it up slowly, because I honestly think that nutmeg has some potential as an interesting substance, but I don't think I could stomach it again. My advice to others is don't write it off, but show the substance some respect and dose low to start with. Just because you can buy it at the grocery store doesn't mean it won't kick your ass.

Why is this turning into a debate? Dose less.

you can't dose less. there's known way to extract just the psychoactive chems. and what's more is no one knows the dose of the psychoactive chemical(s). what is 1% of the dose needed in one batch might be thousands of times the dose needed in another batch of nutmeg. it's even more dangerous than "bath salts"

Wow some tense judgmental hatred on the users of nutmeg makes this thread have a terrible atmosphere. I don't intend to use it but I think it's not nice to pass judgements on those who do, this forum is not about that, I've got the idea of that and I'm new here
