I am 18 and I occasionally order the odd Research Chemical/ Legal High online but lately my mum has been acting weird and from out of nowhere started warning me about drugs and stuff, I thought maybe because sometimes about once a fortnight I smoke a little bit of weed with friends and she may have smelt it. But today she asked me what was that powder that came in the post yesterday (It was MDAI). I was honest with her and told her it is/was an antidepressent and releases seretonin and gives a mild effect, (she's quite interested in medicine herself so she knows a few of the fancy medical words lol) she didn't really say much after that. I can understand her concern but she has no right to be opening my mail, I didn't question this because I couldn't be bothered to argue. :X

Now I am worried she'll open other stuff in the post, so now I am thinking of just buying on the street. :|

My parents open my mail, since i'm living under their roof its their rules and they've known me to order things there in the past, so i can't really complain. Your just gonna have to accept it, order it to a friends house or something.

I agree with links...its her house, so she has the right to check out what's coming into it. I'm 23, live 400 miles away from my family, and my father goes through any mail I get at our house (I still have most things sent there), so I think it's just a parent thing. You're 18, find a friend away at college or something if you wanna make orders, I suppose.

Pretty sure its against the law to open someone else's mail.

Even if this is the case, pretty sure LE wouldnt do anything about parents opening their sons/daughters mail, especially if theres white powders involved. Trust me, just send it elsewhere. Or ever thought about opening a PO box if you're uk?
I'd probably be as outraged as you, but after you've lived elsewhere/been kicked out you learn to appreciate your parents much more, s'why i wasnt pissed off when my mum found & binned some zopis of mine i was sent the other day, wasnt even obvious it was cleverly hidden, she must've searched it thoroughly. Was my bad for getting it sent here in the first place :)

It's a federal offense to open someone else's mail (at least here). As long as you're an adult and the mail has your name & address on it and someone else decided to open it (doesn't matter who it is) you can press charges against that person(s).

Well i doubt the OP wants to press charges against his parents, especially since his surely that'd just end up with a homeless 18 year old and it sounds like his mums being pretty reasonable about it.

LOL I'm sure the post office where I live (town of like 300 people so I'm not being completly paranoid) is kinda curious why all I ever get is packages from other countries, but so what? Just rent a PO box.

Yeah I've tried that threat before, and my family is like, how would you like to lose a permenant address? So yeah, no. It's good to get important documents at a stable residence, and if the price you pay is having your mail opened by your parents it's going to happen. I don't know of anyone who would press that charge against their parents --- especially if you aren't paying rent or supporting yourself, I feel like your parents get to almost "override" that right and check what is coming into their house that they pay bills for and support.

If you don't like your mum opening your mail then move out. Her house = her rules.

Open her mail and ask her if she likes it.

If she says yes, then you now have mutual rights to open each others mail.
If she says no, keep doing it anyway, snatch your shit out of her hand if you have to. IT IS YOURS!!!!!!

The residence is hers, not your mail... WTF to all of those people who say: Her house, her rules. How twisted did your parents actually make you guys as a child? Seriously? Getting kicked out for taking your own damn mail? GTFO!!!!!!!

My mom respects my property regardless where or who receives it. Fumble all you may, but don't open my shit. PERIOD.
Where or who doesn't matter, it's your mail, not your moms, you dads, or anyone else who's name is not on the receiving end of that envelope. PERIOD.

So if you accidentally got a neighbor's mail, would you open it just because it is in your house? Same thing applies universally here.

This is fucked up on many different levels.

What he said.

My son is just away to turn 18, i have never opened any of his mail, even when he was really young if he got mail i still gave it to him to open as it is addressed to him.

Intercept it... and know when it should be arriving, then just proclaim "My pen pal wrote back!" then dash into your room to stash...I mean read the letter

or something a lot less lame would probably be better..

Do you think the postman would give you mail if you just waited outside the house with id/proof of address?
