Hi everyone,

I know I haven't been around here much lately, but just thought I'd let you know that my first collection of poems, How to be Hungry, is now available! :D

The book's overriding theme is desire and its offshoots: craving, aversion, addiction. As you can probably guess from the "green bomb" on the cover (see below), drugs are a major focus, and a number of the poems were originally posted on BL. =D How to be Hungry also explores the darker edges (disconnection, deception, anxiety) and possibilities for navigating these (mindfulness, meditation, creativity). Along the way the reader is teleported to cafés, bars, nightclubs, parties, a rehab clinic, a psychiatric ward, a meditation hall, a golf course, beaches, offices, cities, suburbs, highways, strange interiors and various hells.

A paperback edition is available for $15.00 plus delivery, or you can download a PDF of the book for $6.00 (these prices are in US dollars).

An interesting point. I can definitely see an argument there in terms of free downloads. Not so much in terms of a 'physical' book though - obviously someone has to foot the bill for printing, postage, etc.

Personally I still prefer to read 'physical' books, and I don't think I'm alone in this. I always envisaged this as a physical book.

But as far as the PDF download goes, I'd be cool with having that available on a 'donation' basis, a la Radiohead's In Rainbows where you could pay whatever you felt like (or pay nothing if you chose). I will look at that for the future. :)
 
yeah, you can always set up your own website and sell PDF copies for donations through there. that would be awesome because you could add poems a la blog and sell the best-of stuff that you don't just post for free. thought of doing that myself but i still have a lot of work to do in pumping up my image locally before i can expect anything i publish online to get the hits i want.

my disdain from charging for self-published works stems from the fact that there are so many people with the desire and genuine WILL to write but sadly just aren't good at it and most of them resort to lulu where, if left on its own, your content will likely get buried amongst the shite unless you are able to network with the writing community at large and promote your stuff to a larger market of literary-minded people who have gotten a taste of your work.

Yeah, I just see Lulu as an easy way of making the book available to pretty much anyone, anywhere. I'm not expecting many people (or anyone, really) will just chance upon it through Lulu. I'm cool with the fact that if I want people to know about it, it's pretty much in my hands. Or in the hands of those who read it, if they like it enough to want to spread the word.
 
I have read the book, and I suggest that you purchase it because it deserves to be read.

I was thinking of using lulu. Is the set up easy enough? I've heard stories with a few self publishing websites where it's more trouble than it's worth.
 
I didn't experience any major issues - Lulu's interface is pretty easy to use.

The print quality of books produced through Lulu seems to have improved a lot over the last few years too (I heard a few horror stories in the early days). And as far as I know, no one who's bought my book has had any problems with the ordering/delivery process.

Are you looking to publish a book as a commercial venture, as opposed to just self-publishing for family and friends? If so, I'd suggest before you start working on layout and design, you should spend some time checking out the layout and design specifications Lulu requires in order to gain access to their wider distribution networks (e.g. Amazon).
