my arm is getting wose...? reason for concern? (abcess)

Looks bad, I'm no expert but I don't think you're going to loose your arm. :D good luck at the doctor's man.

do you think i could get some pain meds prescribed for this?

its starting to hurt so bad that i cant sleep. i took 2grams of apap and it doesnt help at ALL.

i dont metabolize codeine, so id have to ask for hydrocodone 10mg, due to my past opioid abuse.

is it within the realm of possibility to get som pain killers for this, given my history?

Not if you tell them that the infection was from IV use. They'll probably give you some IV antibiotics though :\

Good luck man, and I hope you get this shit taken care of.

Although it is a large infection. Your skin doesn't appear gangrenous or even inflamed for that matter. No chance of you losiong your limb , buddy. I would go back to the doc, but Bases on staph and various infection I've had before, this doesn't look near as bad, one thing my doc told me to look for. I have had them festering before. I have a atibiotic resitant staph in my body. My doc estimates another 2 years for my body to fight it off. I just don't think yours looks that bad. Remember I'm not a doc. Good luck with your ordeal.

looks like an abscess to me, i don't think it's a simple miss. swollen red part is the pressure from the increasing puss inside. looks bad and certainly won't end well if left untreated. the fact that your doctor put you on a strong spectrum of antibiotics and sent you home is a good sign, as he obviously didn't think that you were at risk of sceptic shock and he thought antib-B's could take care of it.

answering your question.. no your arm will not feel worse before getting better (as a rule) when treated with antibiotics unless you have an allergy to them. Usually they get straight to doing their job.

the pain travelling up your arm could be a number of things, worst of all being sceptic shock and travelling infection via bloodstream... but trust me dude if that was happening you'd know about it.
- less serious would be that the swelling is pushing against tendons and all the things that help your arm bend and move.

i don't personally think that anti-B's will cure the issue, but will certainly hault the infection to a degree.

IMO you'll have to have the abscess drained, which will remove the huge mass of infectious fluid.. once this is done you'll feel massive relief. Then a strong course of antibiotics will easily kill what remaining infectious material is left and all should be well.

orml's statement of arm loss is a little premature, and he is no expert.. but if u waste time you could definitely lose your arm. simple as getting to the doc and getting that thing drained.

you'll be ok, but take this very seriously...

good luck mate

hey man, don't let this alarm you or anything. Just skip the doctors office and go to the ER!

The visit won't be bad, I promise you! You'll probably be in and out within the day but you should really get that thing drained out!

The worst thing that they'll probably do is sedate you and cut it out so that they can clean the infection from the inside! (You don't want it spreading through your muscle tissue and really fucking your shit up!)

Try to relax, I know how queasy and nervous you might be feeling! Stop taking the APAP, and head to the ER!!!

You'll probably get some morph or maybe some percosets after they operate.

It looks like you missed a vein to me. The same thing happened to me and stayed there for close to 2 weeks, it bruised up and eventually everything went away. But there is still a hard little bump right where I tried to inject some liquid diazepam. Like someone said though, medical advice over the internet shouldn't be that reliable.

iv'ing diazepam isn't as straight forward as a lot of drugs unfortunately. If you weren't aware i'd suggest looking up cannulation and administration details for diazepam.

basically it should be iv'd slowly in small dose increments over a period of time.

if you knew this then cool, if not then have a google about it.

peace :)

oh yeah... and by doc, i meant ER.. Path's right

I went to the ER for mine... I was in there for a few days because of the blood infection that went along with it. Just make sure you get in there ASAP...

I am assuming it is some form of staph... You just need to have it drained. That sucker is big enough that they will probably need to put some packing in it. The skin doesn't look dead on top, so you will most likely not have a huge scar... There will be a hole, and most likely a large wick inserted...

It is routine... but you need to get into the ER before it spreads to the blood.

hurry. make haste.

i just went and got it lanced.

about an oz of puss came out.

i got an rx to norcos for it. wow.

the dr said it is pretty serious, but if i take care of it and keep the wound open/drain it regularly, it should heal.

My friend almost DIED from this shit a bout a year and a half ago. He missed some crack and let the shit go for almost a week. He didn't get a BUMP, his whole fucking bicep swelled up twice it's normal size. The infection spread to his chest. He had to have several surgeries. The inside of his bicep looks like a slab of raw bacon and a big chunk of his pectoral muscle had to be removed. Sad shit. I KEPT telling him to hit the E.R. but the idiot just kept catchin' a buzz instead. On the 5th or 6th day when he was hallucinating and had a fever of 104 he finally went.

The whole reason he didn't go to the hospital is 'cause he didn't want to get in trouble. I'm glad to see that you went and took care of this.

So can we see some "after lancing" pics? I'm just curious; did it "deflate" when they drained all that shit out? (sorry, I got strange interests :\ )

I bet you feel REALLY relieved to be done w/ that! Good for you for taking care of it.
