Mushrooms – Experienced – Bad Weather by The Fire

I’ve tripped on mushrooms many times over the last two years. I thought I would write about a trip I had last Friday. This trip was interesting for me because it was only the second outdoor trip I have had, similarly it was only the second time I have tripped around people and the first time I have been with someone else tipping. my previous attempts to write trip reports have been a bit all over the place, so hopefully this one is more legible!

The plan was that me and two male friends of similar age to me (18/19) would go camping in a beautiful spot near where we live. Me and one of my friends (D) would eat some mushrooms whilst the other friend (T) would trip sit us during the peak and then go home later (he had work the next day). D had never tripped before, and neither D or T knew much about tripping so a certain amount of responsibility was on me to make sure things went smoothly.

We met up at 6:30 and walked down the road to the camping spot. The spot is on the top of a long ridge, which stretches miles across the county I live in; it’s the only raised land for miles. Along the edge of this ridge runs a mixed (but mostly beech) wood and overgrown fields climb up the gentle slope to the campsite (which sits on the edge of the wood, under a large tree). Behind the woods is a road, which is empty at night.

Upon arrival the weather turned. Rain started pouring down and the wind picked up to a near howl. Luckily I have a decent tent, and once it was set up we had guaranteed shelter. Somehow T managed to get a fire going and we made a stockpile of (rather wet) wood. At this point I was having second thoughts about tripping, because the setting was a bit crazy and it was getting cold. After some deliberation we agreed to go ahead and me and D each ate 30 Psilocybe semilanceata mushrooms. I weigh about 165lb; D weighs about 190lb – 30 (very scientific way of measuring I know!) is normally a decent dose for me, so I figured it would be a mild introduction to mushroom land for D.

The mushrooms were eaten at 8:00, pretty much bang on. The light levels were beginning to fade at this point in time. The three of us huddled around our fire, the wind howling and rain pouring. A combination of being under a tree, around a fire and wearing decent clothing kept us fairly dry. At about 8:40 I started to feel the first twinges; a steady and rhythmic humming energy that suddenly hits me….hangs around for a few seconds then subsides. There was no proper sunset due to the bad weather, which is a shame but the light vanishing was a spectacle in itself. The sky darkened pretty much at the same rate I was coming up and that tryptamine ‘enhanced’ vision where everything seems so lush and layered kicked in. D wasn’t feeling anything at this point.

At about 9:00 I stood up to go for a pee and found I was actually pretty fucked up. We had been talking non stop and I guess that was the first time I had ever been engaged, constantly during a come up. Normally I just sit back and chill. The old mind was pretty clear though, no drastic swings in thought process yet just a growing body buzz and altered perceptions. This carried on in much the same way for an hour, we ere all having a wonderfully deep chat about life in general. D claimed he could feel anything, but it was clear to me he was slowly slipping under due to the goofy smile and manner of speech.

The valley below us was now dark, and made for quiet an eye opener. On one side lay the city of Lincoln, which in the dark is very impressive. On the other endless black country side which seemed to roll on uninterrupted forever, save for a ghostly power station in the distance – cooling towers lit up in red lights, like something you would expect to see on a sci-fi industrial planet. D asked casually ‘why are the towers (for there were two large ones close together) moving apart?’ Hmm!

At 10ish we got out our MP3 players. D couldn’t find the batteries for his so I leant him mine, which contained lots of psytrance and similar stuff which is epic when tripping. D had never really listened to such stuff before and loved it, especially ‘Becoming Insane’ By Infected Mushroom. I think the music probably notched up his trip somewhat, or rather focused his mind on it rather than on me and T. When he emerged from the music he said he could feel it now, but it wasn’t really what he imagined. (Is it ever?)

T rolled some fags, which we smoked. I don’t normally smoke tobacco and have never smoked anything on mushrooms before. It was a very nice feeling, not from the tobacco per se just from the act of smoking, especially blowing out puffs. After this D got out a bottle of Pimms. Pimms tastes vitriolic on it’s own, but when mixed with lemonade is nice. Turns were taking sipping the Pimms and lemonade. Yay!

At 11:00 (+3:00), T left for bed. My state of mind was intriguing in that no real peak had been observed, just a very steady and smooth (no nausea at all) come up, followed by a plateau. I think D was in a similar state to me, maybe a bit less intoxicated. Anyway we spent the next couple of hours talking in a lot of detail about all kinds of things, and sipping Pimms.

We retired to the tent at about 1:00, but neither of us could sleep so we talked more. D revealed how he had enjoyed the evening and was glad he had done it, but was a bit disappointed he didn’t see any visuals. At this point, as if his critique was answered, the lights from the fire became visible dancing on the tree behind the tent. This created lots of funny patterns, which the mushrooms no doubt made stronger. We enjoyed staring at them for a while before putting on music and sleeping.

I awoke the next day at around 9, no hangover at all but a bit tired. D was worse off and had some nausea along with being exhausted. His dad drove up to meet us on the road outside and commented on how tired D looked. We said our goodbyes, I went back to take down my tent and tidy up.

Overall a very comfortable trip for me, the only time I was troubled at all was when the branch above us began to creak and we had to move! Then again that would probably have troubled me sober. I’m surprised at just how relaxed the trip was, normally I hate the come up and find it tricky emotionally and physically but this time it was perfectly smooth, I can only put this down to being distracted and talking. I had no physical discomfort at all during the trip or the next day, which has never happened me before on any dose, never mind a fairly substantial one. I would say I was at a decent ++ for most of the evening. If I had sat back and listed to music in the tent +++ could have been reached.

It wasn’t really comparable to the crazy mental rides or the insane euphoric travels I’ve had before, but it was a very very nice, relaxing and cosy trip in a great setting. I love camping in wild weather, so long as I’m prepared and I loved it even more tripping.

Peace, love and happy travels <3

Nice report!

Sounds like fun, even though you didn't reach the level you wanted to get to. When I was able to make cannabis (on probation now and can't due to weekly drug screens), it would always boost my trip VERY nicely, and always put me where I wanted to be.

Sounds like you had a good time overall, but drinking alcohol while on any psychedelic doesn't ever heighten the experience, just brings it down.
