Mushroom Season 2012

Just checked one of my patches, and found a few nice subs. A little dry due to the lack of rain but they are out there to all you Sydney guys who are wondering. Hopefully we get a good rain soon. I'm on the north shore by the way.

Hey guys, I went with some friends up to a couple of pine plantations near Daylesford on Sunday, and to my disappointment couldn't find a single P. Subaeruginosa. The forest was full of mushrooms, we could hardly step anywhere without squishing some, but pretty much they were all little tiny brown ones that I couldn't identity or A. Muscaria. I did find quite a few mushrooms that looked quite a bit like subs, only they bruised yellow/orange and didn't have a chalky white stalk. I took one home just in case to take a spore print, and it was dark grey.
We were mainly looking around decaying stumps and woody matter like that, and near the branch line of trees.

I was wondering if I was looking in the right spots? How old should the pine forests be? One was very young (and not much good for mushrooming), and the other was at best adolescent with the trees all being perhaps 6-8m tall.

Much obliged!

Hey mate, mushroom hunting is just one of those things. You can spend days searching absolutely perfect conditions and not find anything, and then when you least expect it you will stumble upon a patch in the most random places! I think the hardest part is finding your first patch. After that you sort of get a feel for it- and have a spot to come back to when they grow back. That's why I suggest taking good care of the patches you find. I have patches I have been visiting for years. Good luck

Happened upon a nice little patch of Psilocybe Subaeruginosa today, was taking my dogs for a walk and stopped along the way to smoke a spliff, ended up I wasn't standing more than 3 feet away from a handful of nice clusters of them. I didn't pick any as I don't consume them any longer but it is nice to see they are up in my area. South Eastern suburb of Melbourne btw.

how long did you hunt for?
when me and my mate we go for a shrooming sesh, we usually walk about 4-5hrs yo :)

Holly shit-balls.
I had one of the smallest amounts on Friday, absolutely blew my mind.
I thought I was ready for something out of this world, or that ego death everyone talks about, but no, I have a long way to go before I can do that, and preferably not when I'm around the misses (or anyone to be honest).

10 mins in I could feel it starting, then about 25 in the walls in the room started coming apart, I was about to say goodbye world but then realised my misses had only half of what I did and she would have ended up calling the ambo.

I decided to calm it down by taking periactin and a Valium, then regretting taking them because of how awesome I felt once the peak subsided.

Fuck I love shrooms, favourite drug ATM, will inform you all of my death when it happens.
Problem is I realised how hard it will be to kill my ego, I realised that I would be a complete mess, crying , hating myself.

Oh well, must mean I need it. Seemed strange to me, I've been taking them a fair bit lately, and higher doses than what I did Friday, but shit that was intense.

how long did you hunt for?

This is the most relevant question, regarding new mushroom enthusiasts. I've had a lot of private messages, and read a lot of posts, saying: "I tried hunting in a park or a forest and didn't find any!" You should not expect to find any unless you are willing to put in the effort. During your early days, it will probably take a lot of time and dedication to find large amounts. Don't expect to just go to a park, any park, and discover an abundant amount of active mushrooms. Not every park, or ever forest, will pay off. Sometimes, inexplicably, there are no actives in what appear to be perfect environments for actives. There is no shortcut to discovering massive amounts of fungi. If you want to succeed, try try try again.

:)

I find it amusing reading about people's early experiences with mushrooms, and how intense they are. Reminds me of the early days, before I got into heavier psychedelics and stronger hallucinogens; holy shit balls, indeed.

Went for a pick last night with a mate, Did pretty well, definitely enough for a few heavy trips each in the S.E suburbs of Melb =D

You will probably be after the psychoactive variety

^ ha!

It gets a little tiring answering the same questions over and over again. There are so many first time hunters posting in this thread asking for advice before they even bother to go and have a proper look! What I recommend for your first hunting season is to do some research and go have a hunt. If you devote sufficient time and effort, you will be successful.

Your question, westmagpies, is so vague that I don't know how to answer it without basically telling you everything there is to know about hunting. And this thread isn't designed for that. There's a couple of experienced hunters who keep indulging these questions and generously devoting their time to young inexperienced mushroom enthusiasts, but - seriously - just get away from your computer for a couple of hours. Stop asking. Start doing. Use this thread to post finds and ask serious questions.

Locations are against the rules.

I found a whole bunch of P Subs and P(silocybe) Cyanescens a couple of days ago. By far the most Cyanescens I've ever discovered in a single location. They were growing in close proximity to a bunch of Subs. Coming down now off 3.3 grams. Nice little bit of mushroom, they are. Bit of the old mungus fungus.

i went searching in east melbourne yesterday, saw planty of mushrooms but no subs as of yet

Thats a shame, I've been cleaning up out north during uni breaks. Still yet to go for a walk out east, but my patches in the inner suburbs haven't been fruiting to well as yet.

Went for a short, quick hunt today in the northern suburbs of South Australia. We have a very large reserve near where I am, with lots of creeks and pine/eucalyptus trees around, so I know that a bit deeper into the season this will be a great spot. Today though was more of an introductory hunt, and I found some very pretty looking mushrooms and an abundance of those usual white, boring, brown-staining ones. What are they called? They're absolutely everywhere but I take that as a good thing; where there's lots of any type of mushrooms there's bound to be some of the good ones, right?

Will update next hunt (probably next weekend). :)

edit: Might as well ask, while I'm here; I found one mushroom that was quite large, about the size of my hand, yellow, quite squishy, and had no gills...I don't really know how else to explain it, but instead of gills, it had lots of tiny holes. It looked pretty magic to me but obviously I know it isn't; still, it's quite pretty. Any ideas on what it could be? I'm thinking phlebopus marginatus but I don't have much of an idea about all this yet. (hope this isn't classed as ID'ing, considering it's legal? sorry if it is)

Our no ID rule isn't to do with legality so it's still not allowed. Go ask on shroomery, they have a much larger and more experienced community when it comes to mushrooms :)
