Mushroom paper

Hi, first time posting. I've heard you can make paper out of mushrooms by chopping them up and mixing with water, blending, and drying on a screen of sorts (its actually called a deckle and mould, basically just a fine screen in a frame). The idea is you pour a thin film of your mushroom slurry over the screen, let it dry for a bit, flip the screen and let the thin pad dry out. Voila, paper.

I came up with this idea because I want to make a small, edible notebook that I can take on international flights. Sounds good, right?

Here's my dilemma, do you think this would negate any positive effects the mushrooms may have? I know you can make mushroom tea (I've never made it myself, I've always just eaten them raw, either fresh or dried) which makes me think the positive effects may be water soluble. I don't want to blend up a whole bag of mushrooms with water, dry it out and then have the best part evaporate away, ya know?!

What do you guys think? Should I try with a little? My flight is on Thursday and I've got a pretty hectic work week beforehand... I don't know when I'd be able to sneak in a mushroom night before the flight.

Thanks, PSFresh.

It's a long shot, mushrooms are not as fibrous as wood pulp, but it might work. I'd save (freeze) the water, because that will be very active, as for the paper being active....eh maybe? but probally not very.

I'd say if you're simply looking to smuggle psilocin mushrooms on an airplane I'd tell you scrap this idea and just mail your goods to "wherever your final destination might be.

;)

Otherwise this seems like an overall geniune practice you're trying to get into, an appealing hobby of a craft it looks to be at that.

I read through that link you posted it was lovely. It's rare to be surprised with obscure stuff like that especially concerning fungi. Neat.

Thanks Thou, I was thinking, I'm not trying to make super crafty paper here, I'm just trying to make a hallucinogenic travel safe edible notebook. I bet if i ground up the mushrooms in a coffee grinder or something and added just enough water to get it sticky (like the consistency of pancake batter) I could still make some real chunky paper. Then I'd just leave it to dry, trying to collect anything that dripped to add it back to the top...

I don't know, we'll see how it turns out. I'll post results.

I would suggest trying it with button mushrooms or something first.

I suspect that you will have some not-very-flat paper which, combined with its colour will make it look nothing like a notebook.

It won't look like a mushroom either though :P

A) psilocybin mushrooms grow in many regions across the globe
B) I don't think the BLUA allows members to assist you commit drug smuggling offences
C) the tryptamines you are looking for in "magic mushrooms" are water soluable. I imagine you'd be left with a fibrous inactive (or barely active) shroom pulp that may alert sniffer dogs and still be classed as an illicit drug (smuggling shit in weird solutions/materials/hiding spots is nothing new)
D) many "shroom-like" research chemicals - especially the 4-subs - are either unscheduled, unknown (by authorities) or legal (for research non-human-consumption purposes). Surely for such a mission, these may be more suited to you. Depends on the destination and a number of factors, of course.
Extractions of the actives of psilocybe mushrooms are reportedly not too difficult to carry out, though I'm not sure how stable the resulting material is.

Creative though it may be, I have a feeling this shroom paper idea may be a lot of bother for little return.
I'm not advocating you break the law in any way, crazy as some of them may be....but yeah, I wouldn't wanna jump on a plane knowing that was in my luggage.

Extract the actives from the mushrooms into tea; it's easy. Do it. Then begin the process of evaporation and allowing it to concetrate on to paper towel. That is also quite easy, but time consuming. You end up with active impregnated paper towel. Don't know anything about the long term stability, but it does work and has been done. Take a gander on some mushroom cultivation boards.

Upon review, assistance with breaking laws of this nature (import of a controlled substance) is not permitted on bluelight and I've closed this thread. Apologies. I would suggest rethinking this.
