Mushie Hunting Season 2003

next time perhaps try constructing one with flywire or more closely meshed chickenwire!

i've experiemented with desicant chambers, and i've found that simply air drying them in a dry, dark, cupboard with limited airflow works just as well. i simply cut the stems of at the cap, lay them out on newspaper, and let them dry. this method also doubles as a quick and easy spore print for the whole batch. only hassle is removing the first bed of paper and replacing it after a day or so.

its unbelievable how the season is peaking right now. i live in the middle/inner eastern suburbs of Melb. and i can't walk down the street without finding little patches!

yea dessicant chamber design should be given a decent amount of thought.. i copied a design i saw. basically it's the prepacked damp-rid container, with slit holes cut in the lid attached to a tupperware container with a round hole cut out of the bottom..... it works fine, although i've found with large numbers of sub's, i've had to fan dry a fair number of them while dessicant drying others and swap over every day or so. within a week, all my mushies are cracker dry.

i think to have them cracker dry, you pretty much require a drying chamber. if you're going to eat them sooner rather than later, then the cupboard method would probably work fine.

I have a question about some p.subs I found (in melbourne) about 6 days ago. I have never encountered dried mushies before and I have been watching these guys dry out. It seems a lot of the psylocybin has oxidised in the process of drying and some of the shrooms have even changed colour completely to a deep, inky, blue/black. They have been handled quite a bit... Is this abnormal at all? Does it effect the amount of psylocybin in the shrooms much?

cheers mushie heads. (:

DJ Scatterface:
... and they're now all laced with sodium chloride
According to my high school chemistry, sodium chloride (NaCl) is common table salt (NaCl)... is that what you were drying them with?

BigTrancer :)

perhaps he was using calcium chloride? i think most of the dessicant's you can buy in the supermarket are calcium chloride.

dexium - as long as they dont smell rotten then they should be alright.. it's believed that the more it oxidises the more potency that is lost, however i'd take a guess that they're still quite potent :) next time you dry them, try to handle them less, use a fan for a day or two first and then a dessicant chamber. they should dry out to a nice straw colour.

Jimbu: Thankyou for the advice :) I can't smell anything, so it looks like they're fine. I'll look for some further articles and stuff about drying out mushrooms like you said.

'Forbidden Fruit - A documentary'

This is taken from an email ent to me from a friend who helped create this site.

IT'S OFFICIAL...our 'Forbidden Fruit- A documentary' website is now on line. These pages focus on Australian, and more specifically Victorian native magic mushrooms and their associated culture. Please add our site to your links and favourites as it is an important Oz site and can also serve as a springboard to many other intersting sites and infomation by Australia's plant-heads.

http://www.wandjina.net.au/~forbidden_fruit_doco/index.htm

There's lots of goodies for all the people out there - documentary info, lots of cool pics, ID info, MP3s to download, Oz-based and overseas links and lots more to peruse.

There are exerpts from interviews with lots of australian psychonauts and also an interview with Trout from 'Trouts Notes'.
We also have original articles on Australian magic mushrooms which have been specifically written for this site.

Special thanks to all of the lovely people that have helped contribute, and a special thanks to our web host.

Make sure you check under the 'other' section too - this is the "goodies" part and has lots more to come soon...

Original contributions welcome (especially articles and artwork).

Any feedback would be a very good thing.
Thanks for all your continued support.

There is still a lot of work to be done in the coming weeks so make sure you return sometime soon. I hope you enjoy what is up there.

Is it just me or has it been ultra dry in Melbourne in the last couple of weeks? I haven't seen a fresh speciman for about a month now.

Hopefully this rain at the moment will help my situation.

found about 100 subs in melb after all this rain today walking home from school.

To all you guys finding them still your doing well. I have about half a dozen spots where i've picked in excess of 100 this season, but I went to them all yesterday and couldn't find a thing.

I doubt 100 subs woudl have popped up after a few hours of rain, they must have been the ones with the will to survive despite the dryness.

Yeah i think it takes atleast 12 hours for them to start growing and even then theyd be really young shrooms. Ones that are popping up tonight will be really brown due to the rain.
I havent found any in almost a month, but its looking promising...

Yeah, your probably right. I had to leave most of them. I only got about 30 healthy looking mushrooms. ALl of the mushies were mature though. There were also some babies popping up as well. They looked like they'd been there a while. Strange though, there's only been a little rain other than the last couple days. I went to some "hot-spots" today but mostly just small ones there. I found lots of stems of big ones though so my guess is I was beaten to the patch !!!

Bump-

Well is the season over, dying down, or am i just not heading out far enough???? It seems there aren't many species round in general (not even stropharias) which is suprising after all this rain!

peace
