Mushie Hunting Season 2003

What is meant by 'the patch is too young'???

I don't pick them until the membrane underneath the top has broken away and the gills are exposed, is that right?

Also, me mates all wanna get stuck into the shrooms, i've only ever had them 2 times both with only 1 other person, the last time we stupidly ate 10 p.subs each (they had been in the garden 2 weeks and were cracker dry from the sun, i thought they'd be weak as!) and really struggled for the first hour or two. We just got really shitty with ourselves and each other, but we worked through it and eventually had a ripper time (thanks to the weed, it saved us). I've heard it can be quite chaotic doing shrooms with a big group, is this true?

I don't care what anyone says about a melbourne winter, if you're a shroomer, you can only appreciate it!

Does anyone find that the older mushrooms have really dark brown (almost charcoal black) gills and that they don't really stain blue much... i have one and i'm pretty sure the stem was very blue (cut of now) however the cap isn't staining blue but only black.

By saying too young I mean that the mushies are only babies, and it's worth waiting a day or 2 until they get a little bigger.

I totally disagree about mushies and groups of friends - I've only ever really eaten mushies with friends, and we all have a blast!

^^^
I agree cAmmAc, some friends and i had a few the other day and we had a ripper time. That was with 5 or 6 friends.
Very chaotic, we were all stuck in huge time loops, De ja vu. The same things kept happening again and again.

Booza - You're right, you should never pick them before the gills are exposed, even then, wait a couple of days.

Dj ScAtTeRfAcE - I find that about the gills too. It's probably best not to eat them when they are that old, just incase they are rotten

I might be going hunting in country victoria in a few weeks and was just wondering what sort of species i could find. From what Iv read already that I could find Amanita muscaria, Psilocybe semilanceata and of course Psilocybe subaeruginosa but I was just wondering if anyone has found any others?

P.S Erowid lists Psilocybe cyanescens and Psilocybe cubensis as found 'In Most States', does that include Victoria?

if you're looking for actives... most likely you'll only find subaeruginosa. you'll probably also find some amanita muscaria if that's your thing.

you certainly won't find cubensis (or cope cyans) at this time of the year in victoria.

apparently semilanceata do grow in australia, but it's unlikely you'll find these.

You're also likely to find P. Eucalypta and P. Australiana, although there is some conjecture as to whether they are seperate species or just sub-species of P. Subaeruginosa. Eucalyptas are potent though the Australianas leave a bit to be desired IMO.

I tried P. subs for the first time, first time on mushies, the other week. After eating roughly 25 (last 10 or so were in honey) I definately have a new found respect for them. This experience was just as, probably more intense than my most intense acid experince in visuals and feeling.

Apparently (I missed out on the hunt :( ) there were still alot more around in a 50m radius of where we were told to go, got to love local knowledge.

Trip report soon to come.

This may seem like a stupid question but i'm gonna ask it anyway.
Can you overdry the mushrooms (using damprid). Just aksing because they get so damn small and i was wondering if they keep loosing psylosibin and just wither away into nearly nothing.

Also i've heard so many conflicting views... can anyone confirm when abouts the season finishes?

thanks in advance
peace, love and happy hunting :)

no. when you're drying them, you're losing mostly water (some potency, admittedly). however, you're likely to lose much more potency over a period of time if you don't dry them properly! damn mushies = lots of oxidation, and also a good chance of them growing mould or starting to rot.

dry the mushies as far as possible (the stems should SNAP when u try and bend them) and dose appropriately :D

the season finishes when either it 1) becomes warm again, or 2) stops raining. as long as it remains cold and wet, you will be able to find some. so some seasons will finish alot earlier than others

^^ i am of course referring to the woodlover season (p. subaeruginosa and it's sub-types)

I was just wondering, if u wanted to start a little patch of your own, would it be more effective if u took some mycelium and buried it in the appropriate growing comditions, or would u be better off spreading the spores??

Just wondering, coz I sometimes pull out some of the mycelium by mistake and would rather put it to good use rather than waste it! :)

Very Blue mushies

Hi guys,
I was out walking on the weekend, and saw two small bright blue mushrooms. I didn't pick them, but I was wondering if they sound like p-subs? The caps were about 3-4 cm wide, and they looked very much like what I've seen on here and elsewhere on the net, however only the very tip of the cap was a golden colour and the rest (stem, cap) were a uniform sky blue. They also bruised an even deeper blue colour.
Can someone indulge my curiousity and tell me what you think they were?
Ta.
JJ

hehe scatterface, i havent been hunting for all that long myself, i've just done ALOT of research on the subject :)

cammac - yeah i've heard that works... plant some mycelium (dont trash all of the mycelium in the spot you take it from tho!) in the right place, wait, and you should eventually have some sort of success.

jimjam - it sounds unlikely that you've found p. sub's, unless they were VERY oxidised and rotting from poor weather conditions (eg. patchy rain). I've seen mostly blue sub's from such weather conditions. don't eat what you aren't 100% sure is magic! if in doubt, post some detailed info with clear photos (of cap, stem and gills) on the shroomery's hunting forum and you should get appropriate ID's :). P. sub's arent all that hard to ID once u find a few, however there are a fair few 'lookalikes' out there which you have to be careful of!

weird shrooms

went picking and found the strangest shroom. never seen anything like them on web but they definately brused bright blue very quickely which made me think they may be edible. of course i didnt eat them tho.

they were huge, about 13cm in diamiter
golden brown top
gills were Bright taxy yellow and big
bruised bright gumboot blue when lightly touched
stem was about an inch thick

just out of curiosity did i waist sum good shrooms by throwing them out? anyone heard of them and are they edible

Yeh those taxi yellow gills sound like a definite turn off for me...
but i only concentrate on subs... your in Melbourne yeah...

They could be Gymnopilus junonius which are an active species.

CAP:

50-180 mm
orange or yellow to rust brown with age,
broad convex to flat, dry with tiny scales

STEM:

5-25mm
70-160mm
yellow/ orange
Slight scales/ pattern Ring from partial veil present

GILLS: Pale yellow to orange or brown with age
Very close

great photo! i'm not sure... i've heard there is a wavy-cap varient of the subs species that is often mistaken for a cyanecen... have u done a spore print yet cos they should be black not purply brown like subs?
