Multiple US Federal Agencies involved in supplying weapons to Mexican cartels

I agree the only way to truly end it is to end prohibition, period. But, i don't see that happening for a long time, certainly doubt i'll see it in my lifetime.
I see it coming to a financial obligation... Eventually the federal government is going to have to cut spending in places it's spending unnecessarily; drug war is on top of that list...

I cannot say i like such a strategy, as it operates on an assumption of something i disagree with. But, assuming legalization is off the table - a fair assumption, despite how much i may disagree with it - this becomes one of the better approaches imo for the reasons already mentioned (doesn't hinder the drugs that get here, significant violence reductions, etc)
If sponsoring a cartel is intended to reduce violence, I highly doubt it's working. I think most of the cartels are working with government...
A major problem - aside from continued prohibition - is that the end of such a path necessitates a state-sponsored cartel. If/when that happens, it's a full-on monopoly, and is in bed with our prohibitionist gov. I don't like the majority of what that entails.
No kidding... I don't think this is even a temporary solution.

CBS Reporter Claims White House Officials Screamed And Cursed At Her

Sharyl Attkisson, the investigative reporter for CBS, made the allegations on conservative host Laura Ingraham's radio show Tuesday. She had been looking into the so-called "Fast and Furious" operation that the Justice Department was running.

During the controversial operation "Fast and Furious" illegal guns were trafficked from the United States into Mexico so investigators could track how drug cartels and other criminals used the guns. As CBS' Bob Schieffer put it, described it, the operation became a "disaster" and the trafficked guns have been used to kill Mexican officials.

Attkisson told Ingraham that, when she broke a damning story about the operation, she got extremely aggressive pushback from the Obama administration. She said that a DOJ spokeswoman named Tracy Schmaler had yelled at her on Monday about the story, but that it was nothing compared to the way a White House spokesman named Eric Schultz had acted.

Attkisson said he had "literally screamed at me and cussed at me" about the story, and that the White House also told her that she was the only reporter not being "reasonable" about the issue.

Wow, Obama administration cursing out Sharyl Atkisson for being a good reporter!

The government has the mainstream press in their pocket so when an actual journalist breaks a true story about the government without spinning it in a positive way the government gets pissed

Documents: ATF used 'Fast & Furious' to make a case for new gun regulations

Full Story: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31727_162-57338546-10391695/documents-atf-used-fast-and-furious-to-make-the-case-for-gun-regulations/

Documents obtained by CBS News show that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) discussed using their covert operation "Fast and Furious" to argue for controversial new rules about gun sales.

In Fast and Furious, ATF secretly encouraged gun dealers to sell to suspected traffickers for Mexican drug cartels to go after the "big fish." But ATF whistleblowers told CBS News and Congress it was a dangerous practice called "gunwalking," and it put thousands of weapons on the street. Many were used in violent crimes in Mexico. Two were found at the murder scene of a U.S. Border Patrol agent.

ATF officials didn't intend to publicly disclose their own role in letting Mexican cartels obtain the weapons, but emails show they discussed using the sales, including sales encouraged by ATF, to justify a new gun regulation called "Demand Letter 3". That would require some U.S. gun shops to report the sale of multiple rifles or "long guns." Demand Letter 3 was so named because it would be the third ATF program demanding gun dealers report tracing information.
