Mugz on the road - Hitchhiking from Cambridge to Glasgow

mugz, what date were you going to head back down South? I've just spotted megabus tickets from Edinburgh to London for £8.

FFS :( I was going to head back on the monday or tuesay, but from Glasgow. It is all cancelled now anyway, as although I have made contact again with the person I was going to be staying with, I have spent the money I Was going to be taking with me on other stuff as the trip was cancelled yesterday. Is slightly annoying but I am not taking it personally or getting upset about it. If anything, it will just allow me to relax and take it easy during my week off work rather than get exhausted travelling and having lots of fun :\ then be a state when I go back to work.

I would have loved to go but have spent the small amount of back up fund on other stuff now, so it is not going to happen. :(

Thanks for looking for me though Kappa :)

Everyone has the right to be incommunicado for a while :)

I am just happy I am coming up now. Wish I hadn't cancelled those tickets now, lol, but that extra £23 will be in my bank in a couple of days too, so that will be an extra bit of fallback money, or I could use that money to actually see the shows if they are not sold out when I get to edinburgh. Most want to see Alun Cochrane not Stewart Lee is sold out to be honest, he is hilarious.

i have once hitched a ride , me and a mate was invited out to a party that ended abruptly and we were told right time to go home even when they knew we had no fucking cash and they were the ones that paid our taxi to get there so i grabbed (stole) a full litre and a half bottle of blue label smirnoff vodka and we hit the road about 30miles from home, we kept thumbing it when anything went past be it van, car or lorry , man we were in luck this irish band that were on their way to the city for a gig they were doing stopped at first they were all asking each other hmm should we should we not so i pulled the bottle out from under my jacket and that was it they dropped us about 20 mins from our home after we all had a good laugh and pleanty swigs from the bottle , they asked us to come see them, play the next night but as we said if we had cash to get out we wouldnt be here in your van hitching but thanks very much for the lift and the invite ... ahhh the irish show them free drink and u get what u want xD

i guess that wouldnt work through the day if it was a family car though xD

So yes at night a bottle full of booze might help you with the right people

thats a true story , fucking hell that would of been a shitty walk home, well maybe not if we got teh chance to finish the bottle between the 2 of us lol

Just got out of my first ride, am now in peterborough, going to try and head straight to manchester from here, apparently only about 2 and a half hours away. My first ride was pretty cool, was a lad about my age, picked me up near the edge of Cambridge and drove me here, had some good banter in the car and was a good first ride :) I was worried I was never going to get picked up to be honest, had about 50 people shake their head before I was finally given a ride.

Gonna get myself a snack here, then head off again towards Manchester. Has been fun so far :)

managed to get myself to blythe service station in nottinghamshire, quite far north now, about half way to glasgow I reckon if I don't make a stop in mancs I might be able to get the glasgow on one of the lorries in the lorry park here in the service station. 250 miles away from glasgow from where I am, hopefully will get there before too late tonight, gonna head out and start looking for a lift now.

Has it been easy to get lifts? I didnt think many people would be up for picking hitchers up these days.

Took ages for anyone to even give me eye contact to be honest when I was in Cambridge.

The first guy was about my age I reckon and just let me in, seemed sound, he said that his dad once was forced to hitchhike and couldn't get lifts so if he ever saw a hitcher he would pick them up.

Second guy saw me writing a sign for sheffield and was heading that way anyway (doncaster) so just offered a lift, he was a decent bloke too, about 30 years old just doing someone a favour.

Not really tried since I have arrived in Blyth Service Station, I have made two new signs, one saying M6 north and another saying Glasgow, hopefully I will get to use them to try and get a lift soon, but there is torrential rain outside at the moment so am pretty stuck unless I wanna get soaked.

I might go stand by the service station entrance with my signs and hope someone offers me a lift.

There is a travelodge here that I thought I could use if I get stranded but they are fully booked so I have to find a lift somehow. Been here over an hour now and have had some lunch/dinner, and drinking a coffee now, gonna go try and find a lift soon. Hopefully it will be as easy as the first two.

Going to target the lorry drivers if possible.

Nice one mate. Your are definitely braver than me. Best of luck for the rest of your journey :)

Good luck matey. I think what you are doing is wicked. Looking forward to seeing you in Edinburgh. It's Fringe time baby!!! Hope to catch up with some other BL's too :)

Sounds no bad. I probably will bounce through. I've not been to Edinburgh for years apart from a house party a wee while ago (but that could have been anywhere, could have easily just been a flat in Glasgow if it wasn't for the bus journey) & a Wu-Tang gig (again, that could have been anywhere, just drove to the gig & drove home).

Why is it legal to drink on the street in Edinburgh? Is it just Edinburgh or is it actually legal everywhere other than Glasgow?

Mos def not legal to drink on the streets here I think. Though with the Fringe, everything is totally laxed, and the Police here are pretty much sound most times anyway.

The streets are starting to buzz, and the 5am licenses are almost here! Thank god im working, so i'll avoid the tourists just here for the shows. The Night time is our domain.

Urbain I'm pretty confident it's legal to drink in the streets of Edinburgh, at least I've always been under the impression it was. You can drink in the streets year round here and the coppers won't say a thing, I used to walk up town to nights out from my flat scooping tins and the cops wouldn't bother when they walked past I've even spoke to a coiple of them when half pished and asked them if it's alright, you see tons of people sitting in the gardens on a nice day and the cops don't bother plssu I remember watching once of those cops shows or booze britain and the police say to a couple boys drinking buckie at Tron Square "this is Tron Square you're not allowed to drink here but you can drink pretty much anywhere else so just move away" or words to that effect.

Fair play to setting off Mugz, seem to have done well so far. If you can't get any further today just kip at the service station tonight?

The streets are starting to buzz, and the 5am licenses are almost here! Thank god im working, so i'll avoid the tourists just here for the shows. The Night time is our domain.

I've never understood how people can not like or get pissed off at the tourists here for the festival, without them there wouldn't be a festival, no fringe, no 5am licenses, nothing. Thank fuck for tourists, it's a great buzz round Edinburgh with them here and IME it doesn't affect residents life that much. I used to bus in and back from the centre every day for work and was never anymore hassle than usual.

Go Mugzy Go!

Actually, you need to come back and mod BDD, sorry... ;)

Aye it's definite legal to drink in Edinburgh. I walked right past a police van finishing off a bottle of wine when we first got off the bus the time I went through for a party.

Mugz, I got your PM. I'll meet you two for a drink the mora night if you make it in time. I'll text you during the day.

Well I am stuck at a service station, that seems to have free wifi, but no indoors :\, so I am using my laptop outside, I think the indoor section is on the other side of the motorway but I don't know how to get across the road, I am not running across the motorway, too dangerous.

Good fortune has smiled down upon our Mugz for the last leg of his journey. A kind soul has agreed to take him the rest of the way. Should be here in just over an hour. WHOO HOOOOO HOOOO!

Can't wait for him to finally get here safe and sound.
