Mugz on the road - Hitchhiking from Cambridge to Glasgow

A lot of people hitch about down here still, very easy to do, not so sure about Upcountry though, think people gettin a bit wary of hitchers, like society generally averyone seems to be gettin more and more wary of "strangers" :(

FTR, the furthest I've hitched was from Izmir in Western Turkey, to Mosely in Birmingham, in 6 days, in 1991ish, very eventful, just hitching from lorry park to lorry park, someone gonna beat that?

If that's not a man coming out then I'm Cliff Richard.

Well you are a bit of a creepy old cunt.

To be frank i like the idea of pub golf, not so keen on the dressing up but making a bit of a competition of who can drink the most seems like a good idea and a receipe for a few victims aswell. :p

I'm with crackhead, never saw the point in drinking games, I find they usually make me drink slower because I've to wait till it's my turn or a certain thing happens. Would rather just drink my drink at the pace I want to.

Agreed, drinking games are shit and annoying. If I really want to get wrecked fast then I'll down my drinks without the aid of some daft game. It's always some weirdo at a party that starts drinking games anyway, none of my pals would even consider suggesting that we play one.

well the person that I was going to be staying with has gone incommunicado :\ and they knew that this was the week I was going to be coming up. I don't have an address either. Hope they are ok, as they haven't responded to phonecalls or texts from me over the last two days. I think after my weekend binge I won't be leaving till tomorrow now anyway, but wont be coming up at all if I don't have anywhere to stay or anyone to see.

Have changed my mind, even if I can't get in contact with the person I was going to stay with I'm coming up anyway, I wanted to have a mini adventure this week, so will have one :D Will just have no clue where I will be staying the night and will probably not stay long in Glasgow and then just go to Edinburgh for the Fringe festival on Thursday morning until Sunday or Monday.

:( :( :(

I knew I should have bought a ticket in advance for Stewart Lee at the Fringe, he is sold out for all of his dates there :( Hopefully I can manage to wangle a ticket from someone while I am there.

You got accomodation for Edinburgh? If not you'll struggle and if you find anywhere it'll cost a fortune.

Fuuuuuuuck, been putting off buying them for ages as well, really wanted to go this year as well after missing him last year :p

Edit: Also just found out that's he doing a gig in Falkirk(very close to me) tonight at 8pm which I had no idea about and would have loved to go to. fuck.

you going to be in Edinburgh for the Fringe during the time that I will be there? get a ticket for Alun Cochrane and also Phil Jupitus for Saturday, i'll be there at the Stand on Saturday, I know what you mean about putting off buying a ticket for ages, I was going to buy a ticket last week but thought I would wait till this week for some reason and now they are all gone.

Think I might just have to survive with my tent and sleeping bag if I can't find a helpful stranger to let me sleep on their sofa for a night, or a cheap hostel at last minute, although even the hostels are ridicolously expensive at the weekend.

I probably won't be through until next week at somepoint, depends on when my mates can get time of work and I can secure a place to stay.

Mugz everywhere charges a fortune for accomodation during Festival time even the hostels. How could you not have realised that there might be a shortage of accomodation during the biggest festival in the world?

Where you gonna set up your tent? Just 5 mins walk from the Royal Mile and you would be at Arthurs Seat which potentially you could camp in but I wouldn't recommend it, there's always a steady strem of tourists up there and no doubt a load of pissed kids now the schools are off. Check EuroHostels (they are in the Cowgate but have a website) many years ago before I moved to Edi me and a mate went through for a gig during festival time, we intended to stay out all day and night and get the first train home but were so pissed by tea time we couldn't get in any pubs or clubs so in the end opted to try and find somewhere to stay, the EuroHostel had rooms and couldn't have been too expensive as we wouldn't have stayed there.

EDIT: Just checked the EuroHostel website and there's no shared rooms in hostels left as far as I can see, you'd need to book a triple room at £35 per person.

There are plenty of other hostels so check hostelbookers.com and see what you can find.

Really reconsidering even attempting my trip to Scotland now, has all fallen apart, have nowhere to stay in Glasgow when previously that was a definite place to stay, they were going to come to edinburgh for the night too on saturday so I would have been able to come back and stay there until I left.

It would be pretty stupid for me to attempt to hitch all the way to Scotland without any place to stay or any cash in the bank as a fallback plan if things go wrong. I think I will try something like this in the future, but only if I have a fallback plan. Do it a few times with a fallback plan, hopefully never have to use the fallback plan so I get more confidence doing it with less of a fallback plan.

It is just too risky to hitch to scotland, try and go to glasgow, and edinburgh, with only £100 to my name which won't cover my food, drinks and accomodation amongst other costs.

Can't afford to get stuck up there with no way home and no money, would be extremely risky and stupid.

Officially cancelling my trip now :(

Couchsurfing mate, get on the emergency couch request forum for Edinburgh, someone will probably take you in.

It's more the getting there and back now that is worrying me, I don't want to end up stranded with no way to get home, I would have been happy to find somewhere to pitch the tent. But the prospect of being stuck without any way home, when I could do something similar in the future and have a fallback amount of money in the bank so that I could get a train easily.

Was a waste of £23 buying the comedy tickets for The Strand now, but there were too many things that could go wrong, I need to at least do a little bit of real planning in the future before I start making spontaneous decisions to do stuff like this.

could you not just camp somewhere? it costs fuck all and is a real adventure!? if its just the one night you wont really need anything anyway... a 1man tent and if your feeling posh a sleeping bag!? do it man!
