Hi, I'm prescribed 40mg MST Continus (morphine) every 12 hours for arthritis pain. The thing is, I'm still in a lot of pain. Realistically, what's the maximum dose I should ask my Doctor for? I feel like I should be on a lot more, as my pain can be intense. I want to ask the Doctor for a realistic dose increase, but I have no clue what is a high or low dose is. Or the dosage range that doctors prescribe. Any enlightenment from people's own experiences is very much appreciated. Thanks everyone

The best way to treat chronic pain is with two narcotics. One for primary pain relief and the second for breakthrough pain.

80mg of extended releases/sustained release morphine is considered a borderline low dose for chronic pain treatment. The construction & dose timing of the pills result in lower blood plasma levels compared to taking an instant release every 4-6hrs.

Oxycodone HCl IR every 4-6hrs is better for pain relief.

IMO, the best PO (oral) combination is Oxycodone HCl and Methadone.
