i was wondering if brewer's yeast has any monosodium glutamate in it considering yeast is major source of msg ??
i checked ingredients list and i see tons of glutamic acid which is supposely unprocessed monosodium glutamate, but i wonder if it just as bad for you. info i got is, it works the same way basically. it can still be excitotoxin.
what are your opinions, suggestions on brewer's yeast ??
 
After reading about MSG, it comes mostly from hydrolyzed and concentrated proteins. Brewer's yeast is indeed fermented, however, I doubt you have anything to worry about. I think I'd compare brewer's yeast to beer, in a way. It's fermented, but the effects of having unprocessed glutamic acid is not half as bad as processing it into MSG. Beer and wine are toxins in large doses and I'm assuming brewer's yeast can be a toxin, too, in large doses.

You probably have no need to be so careful, though, unless you put it in everything.
 
Monosodium glutamate is glutaminergic acid bonded to a sodium ion, and it should have similar consequences in vivo to other sources of "free glutamate", such as parmesan cheese, soy sauce, kombu dashi, etc. The main difference is that with artificially added msg, the doses of free glutamate can be much higher.

second question, if excitotoxicity occurs from too much monosodium glutamate, what, by which way can you reverse it if possible ?

I know you weren't asking me, but I was always told not to buy brewer's yeast as that is the yeast that is left over from, well, brewing, and that it therefore doesn't have any nutrients left. I was told to always make sure I'm buying nutritional yeast as that is where the, well, nutrition is. :P

I could be wrong though. And I've also heard nutritional yeast ("nooch") referred to as brewer's yeast in some health food stores. 8) The confusion will never end!

anyway i had few scoops last night and i felt really agitated and couldnt sleep. not sure if glutamic acid causes side effects such as agitation and related excited states.

Roquefort has a high content of free glutamate, 1280 mg of free glutamate per 100 g of cheese

i think im rly dosing hard on glutamate lately :s

That looks similar to what Simply_Live gets, but I can't tell if it's exactly the same--Hopefully she'll see this and chime in. :) 'Cause if it's the one that she has, I think that's just one of those confused brands that label nooch as brewer's yeast. 8)

Yeah, you could always sue if it turns out to be spent brewer's yeast, but why waste a few thousand dollars minimal and risk the chance of being counter-sued for libel? You should just not waste the fifteen bucks on it again if you find out it's spent yeast. :P
 
tastes like roasted nuts or something. and it feeds you up quick. how can i know if its lacking the nutrtients ? i can say it doesnt seem to be used, spent yeast. but im not a specialist to know. :(
 
^ Just make sure you're eating enough of everything else.

then whats the point of the yeast ? reason i got it is for the high b vitamin content. something thats hard to get in the diet unless u eat like a pig. and i was taking pills before but they all have magnesium stearate so i decided to switch to natural source of high dose b vitamins which happens to be yeast. if it doesnt work, then whats the point of taking it ? and yes *ugh* like food will ever give me the doses i need 8)

I'm sorry, but you are jumping to some awfully dumb conclusions, both here, and in ADD, due to your lack of having a basis of how things generally work.

Basic biology and chemistry are good places to start.

oh i see. well you are the smart guy then, i guess you are right. i can get all the b vitamins in high doses from few grams of any food. thx for clearing this up for me.
nobody was fucking saying u wont get "essential" nutrients from food. try to read again, i said HIGH DOSES OF PARTICULAR VITAMINS. sure, i guess 50 mg vit c from one orange is ok, maybe i can have two but i throw up at 3. and what if i want 1000mg of vit c ???

Then you should eat a well-balanced diet with numerous foods that provide vitamin C. :)

Why someone would want, let alone need, to consume 1000mg of vitamin C is beyond me though, as doses much higher than what you need just get peed out anyways. :P

lol so i know. but i read recomendation for really high doses and usually IV. who knows if thats not just a waste.

but i need high Bs and i estimate i have to eat a lot of things to get them, its just a lot. a "balanced diet" sounds too obscure to me. i dont like same things you like and also i cant afford food as much as others can. but follow this theory if it works for you, it doesnt work for me.
 
You've read recommendations for IVing it? 8o Who the eff would do that?!

Why do you "need" high Bs?

I guess if you can't afford good, wholesome food, go the nooch ("nutritional yeast") route. But as far as "how much to take" each day, maybe find ways to incorporate it into what foods you do eat. I've made sauces and dips out of nooch. I also put it on pasta/rice. I've only ever attempted to take it as is once (I mixed it in water) and nearly threw up, lol.
