Anyone get this specically after eating Asian cuisine in restaurants, or take-away? Every single time I go to a chinese restaurant and order the buffet (which is huge), I struggle even getting up because I am so full and tired and I seriously feel like I have had a huge dose of benzodiazapines. It seems to have the same effect on other people too, and a common line upon paying the bill and exiting the restaurant is, "damn, I feel like I could roll home".
By the time we get home, I usually fall asleep in front of the T.V. and constantly wake up throughout the night, getting up to drink soft-drink and water, because my thoat is so dry.

What do you think is causing this? Would it be the MSG in the food? I know it's not the spices, because when I eat chinese I don't really order any chilli/spicey dishes. So, what gives?

Cheers.

You sure you're not just being a glutton and eating a bit too much?

I often feel the same way if I severley overeat. Not saying that MSG may not be to blame as here are some common side effects of MSG intollerance (from Wikipedia):

An unknown percentage of the population may react to MSG and develop MSG symptom complex, a condition characterized by one or more of the following symptoms:

* burning sensation in the back of the neck, forearms and chest
* numbness in the back of the neck, radiating to the arms and back
* tingling, warmth and weakness in the face, temples, upper back, neck and arms
* facial pressure or tightness
* chest pain
* headache
* nausea
* rapid heartbeat
* weak pulse
* violent dreams
* bronchospasm (difficulty breathing) in MSG-intolerant people with asthma
* drowsiness
* weakness.

I feel sluggish after eating MSG too. Even if it's just a small serving, the MSG does something weird to me

I havent even seen any places that use MSG here in south florida. Not ONE asian place that I've been too in the past 3 years. They all have signs that say NO MSG.

Thanks for the info rusKi. Yer, I still think it's to do with the MSG and not the buffet. Whenever I go out, I usually make a pig of myself. ;) and I never seem to experience this after a nice big hearty seafood risotto, seafood platter, or anything else. It always only happens when I come from an asian restaurant. I love Asian cuisine and personally think it doesn't need any MSG or flavour enhancers to make it taste good. Maybe I should be going to the more expensive places in the city that cook it freshly in front of you.

Also, my ex-girlfriend used to suffer from heart palpitations and MSG, coca-cola, and things with a high caffeine content used to trigger them off. When we once went to this asian restaurant, she asked the waitress if there was any MSG in their food and the lady just kept on trying to dodge her questions and finally said, "No MSG!" in a stern voice and quickly scrurried away into the back. Later that night my ex freaked out, because she was having intense palpitations. So, it's definitely MSG.

Anyways cheers.

Eventhough they say "NO MSG" the bottled sauces they use such as oyster sauce contain msg as one of the main ingredient. when dining in chinese restaurant try to avoid stir fried dishes, instead opt for steamed, soup, or hot-pot item.

I used to be very sensitive to msg -- but I seem to have grown out of it, or something -- I would get severely dehydrated and get horrible headaches, as well as very itchy hands. It was pretty bizarre.

Anyway, the sedation is just overeating, IMO. I get it with any big meal, regardless of msg content. :D

Thats interesting how you mentioned the oyster sauce having msg, because whenever I used to eat combination rice I used to get this fogginess in my head and when I asked them for no msg once they said they dont put msg in the food.

I never had a sensitivity to msg before but I think I have now due to drugs or the suppliments I am taking. As for those other flavour enchancers ending in glutamate they still have bad effects even l-glutamine wich is a very popular and helpful suppliment with bodybuilding can cause very minor adverse effects even though no where near as bad as msg, I think your ment to excersice it off if you take it.

God. All that chinese food makes me so sick. I can't even eat it anymore. Unless it has curry, then I go mad.

You need to find good chinese resteraunts. Theres a resteraunt in Melbourne called "The Flower Drum" that is rated as the best chinese resteraunt in Oz heh.

as stated about, the resaurant will often say 'no added msg' however they import all their sauces from china etc which put the msg in over there, i remember hearing rex hunt say ages ago, msg is more addictive than heroin haha
