First post outside of EADD I think, but ive been checking this board regularly since I will be visiting Australia at the start of September.

I posted a similar thread over on EADD to see what Europeans made of Aus, but Im hoping people on here can offer some advice on areas to live etc. Visas/flights/finances etc are sorted.

The plan thus far is to holiday in SE Asia for a couple of months. Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos. I have booked flights to arrive in Sydney right at the start of September. I think thats your spring ? From what ive read a light jumper/jacket would be sufficient at that time of year. Remember im used to the weather in Glasgow so around 20 is what we call a roasting hot day, lol.

Im hoping someone on here can offer some advice about renting in Sydney. Now from what Ive been looking at prices are crazy compared to Glasgow. I live in the city centre and pay £500 a month for a nice flat. I realise that the hourly rate/salary is far greater in Aus in general, but i dont think i can afford to live in the CBD. What areas outsdie of that allow easy access to the city centre and beach? The south East of the city looked appealing at first glance?

I have a friend in Sydney who had been able to pick up work easily using agencies. Ive got good customer service/office/managerial skills and it would appear there are plenty of suitable jobs I could do. Can you reccommed any agencies in particular I should use?

Whats the club scene like in Sydney. Its a huge city so im guessing it has everything including good drugs. I had a look on pillreports and it would seem you have had a bit of a problem with shit pills like here in the UK over the last couple of years. I dont suppose it will be too easy when you dont know anybody.

Im planning on leaving Syndey at the start of 2012 and travelling up towards Brisbane. This is when the holiday comes to an end and the more serious stuff starts. The girlfriend is a nurse and will be looking to start a permanent job. We accept that since she's only out of uni and been working for a year she might not get a job in the city and we have already started looking at places outside of Brisbane who are more likely to offer sponsorship.

mate you can't ever go wrong finding stuff in kings cross! even if you don't know anyone lol, nimbin's a good place to get your hippy on (few hrs drive from sydney) same as byron bay, sorry can't help you rent wise but check out realestate.com.au it will give you all you need to know on where and how much :) umm i'd suggest coming up over the border to Brisbane...cold as a witches tit in winter but nice n toasty in the summer...it's beautiful, got gold and sunshine coast and north qld is one of the best places in the world!

If you sre lookimg to work make sure your visa allows you to work, they are cracking down on that stuff. Many places now check elgiblity to work as they can be fined for not doing so.

Lol aus is renound for high drug prices, so be prepared to fork out extra, I think a few wikipedia pages state the average prices in aus. "good" drugs depends on who u know, alot of pills in aus are adulterated, same goes for other drugs, but from what I hear syd has had better stuff than further south. Frequent pillreports and ausDD to see whats going around.

Yep under skilled migration she might get easy job further out of town. If you enjoy the colder weather come down south to melbourne, the best city in aus xD

forget sydney, come on down to melboure..GHB capital of the world! plus it's a way cooler than sydney ;)

lol yeah mate, fuck sydney melb is where its at.
you have to take into account 500 pounds is somewhere near a thousand dollars here... your money is worth more than ours so when you look at it that way, you're probably not going to pay any more than you already are.

average rent here is about $300-400 a week for a decent apartment, CBD locations are a bit more expensive, $350-500 depending on what you're after.

housing in outer suburbs goes from $200-400 a week depending on the size of the house, you have to shop around it really varies based on area.

thats in melbourne, i don't know the climate in sydney, never lived there.

I agree, Fuck sydney! Seriously, move to melbourne instead.

I take it you have a working visa or a working holiday visa? If you've got a high skills base in your field then you should be able to get a job. Fortunately, there is always the call center, hospitality work to fall back on if you can't get a job in your field quickly.

I don't know much about renting in sydney, but if its anything like renting in Melbourne, then living in CBD is out of most people's budgets. If you want to save some cash it might be worth looking in the inner suburbs, or on some of the further out suburbs that have a house close to the train station.

On the drug side of things, don't bother with pills. chances are your not going to get MDMA and even if you do it will only be in small amounts. the cheaper drugs we have here are weed, acid, shrooms and GHB. the expensive ones are speed, Ice, coke and heroin. I can't quote prices but you will be shocked, everyone who hears them is. Its doubtful the purity of the coke will be as good as what you will get back home either.

You'll like Australia, and Australians like the Scottish as alot of us are descendents. also, SE Asia is the bomb, spend as much time in Laos as possible.

speed is pretty much ice but cut to crap, so dont bother with that. i would say purity is another problem with aus, as prices are so high, dealers dont really make much profit with out cutting the crap out of everything.

yeh i was shocked when i was talkign to people in the US abotu prices of drugs when i was there,(didnt get anything though, too scared to trust anyone) although i must admit if we had a mexico attached next door things would be different price and purity wise.

Cheers for the replies folks.

Im guessing there is a bit of a Melbourne bias on this board =D

Melbourne does sound like a nice city, and from what I gather its the most European like city in Australia.

Plans are set now for Sydney, but we do know someone in Melbourne and its likely we will visit at some point .

Im going on a Working Holiday Visa, but really hoping that we will extend that and find a sponsor for my g/f. its more likely she will get sponsorship being a nurse.

My mate is in Brisbane right now and only ever gets offered weed. To be honest the only drugs id be interested in are MDMA,Coke and very occasionally LSD. As i get older the more picky I get about the quality of my drugs aswell. Im not in the practice of swallowing anything that comes in a pill, so it would have to be good quality MDMA. From what I gather thats not easy to come by.

I will just go with the flow and see what happens whilst there.

Brisbsne got flooded and I heard prices are up thru the roof and almost near mars. Good luck with mdma. Coke is full of novacaine here, can hardly see mother peral or close. In not really into the juice scene so I duno bout that

I mean there is good stuff out there, so dont get the wrong impression, but then again dont expect too much, we dont exactly have mexico next door

This is probably better suited to Aus Social GlasgowE. We generally don't allow availability discussions here, it's all about who you know. That said the scene has been pretty well summed up already in this thread. Let me know if you'd like it shifted over to Aus Social where you can discuss the benefits of each city, job markets etc further?

another thing that would probs give you a heart attack are phone plans, internet plans and their prices. i think we are teh most expensive country with phone and internet pricing. horrible service and expensive pricing, assholes making so much money and you think they could possible increase service?

Hi GlasgowE, I've lived in Sydney my whole life (nearly 27 years) and I'm really excited to hear you're coming to live in Sydney for a few months! Good choice ;)
I have booked flights to arrive in Sydney right at the start of September. I think thats your spring ? From what ive read a light jumper/jacket would be sufficient at that time of year.

Correct. Spring is from September 1st to December 1st. Spring mornings in Sydney can be crisp but it warms up to around 20-25C during the day. September is more notorious for being windy. In October we start to get the odd hot day here and there, and in November it really starts to warm up. December January and February are the scorching months :)

Im hoping someone on here can offer some advice about renting in Sydney. What areas outsdie of that allow easy access to the city centre and beach? The south East of the city looked appealing at first glance?
Anywhere near the city or any of the beaches will be expensive, unless it's a shitty little delapidated unit built in the 1970s ;)
Probably the cheapest rental markets in the areas you've been looking at are going to be Maroubra, Randwick and Bondi. And even there you're looking at around $300/week for a 1 bdm studio apartment, or $600/week for a 2 bdm flat.

If you want to get better value for money you're better off looking at some of the suburbs west of the city. The market around Ryde, West Ryde, Meadowbank etc is still good. You can get a nice 2 bdm flat for around $350-400/week. It's about a 30 minute train ride or 40 minute bus trip in to the city from that area. I lived in Meadowbank for 3 years and I loved it there :)

Can you reccommed any agencies in particular I should use?
The only employment agency I've ever used are Select (who have since changed their name and are now called Randstad...I assume they are just as adept at recruitment :D), and they were great for me. It might be worth giving them a call: http://www.randstad.com.au/

Hehehe that's where you'd be wrong pal ;)
The drug scene in Sydney is pretty shitty at the moment. I stopped bothering with ecstacy about 3 years ago because the quality was declining so much, and so you can imagine the general quality of pills these days is pretty dismal. Same with coke and speed, it's been a while since I've had either of those so I can't comment on the current state of them. Unless you get extremely lucky, you're most likely going to get reasonably low-quality drugs if you just buy from anyone off the street. RCs are also hard to get because they've cracked down on the importation of them really heavily in the last 12 months or so.
Sorry :(
LSD is probably the most reliable substance you're going to be able to get in Sydney, but then it's a matter of finding someone who has it! :D

Let me know if you have any further questions about Sydney, and I hope you enjoy your time here! :)

OP.. to be honest mate you'd be better off using your move as a chance to quit! The quality of most drugs in australia is lower and more expensive than in Europe.. from personal experience.. It's a rip off here lol

Or he could use his shift as a chance to improve his life and aim for a new career where the price of drugs is irrelevant. Surely lines of coke off the back of a yacht sailing Sydney harbour is better than a dodgy bump in a dark corner of a Glasgow club. ;)
