New Wes Anderson (Rushmore, Life Aquatic) Movie: Darjeeling

Fox joins Anderson on 'Darjeeling'

By Nicole Sperling and Borys Kit

Fox Searchlight is getting into the Wes Anderson business. The Fox specialty division will be the home of the writer-director's latest project, "The Darjeeling Limited," which will star Anderson vets Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman and Adrien Brody. Principal photography is set to begin at year's end in India. The three will play brothers on a spiritual journey through India after the death of their father.

"Darjeeling" is based on a screenplay from Anderson, Schwartzman and Roman Coppola. Anderson and Coppola will serve as producers on the film.

Searchlight specializes in offbeat, quirky fare, which happens to be Anderson's trademark. Anderson's previous films, "Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou," were all made for Touchstone Pictures under the guidance of Nina Jacobson, former president of the Walt Disney Motion Picture Group.

I've enjoyed all of his films so far. Needless to say, I will be looking forward to this.

Wes Anderson is my favorite director and created my favorite movie, ever -- The Royal Tenenbaums so I'm very excited to see what comes of this.

Though I too am a little annoyed at Owen Wilson starring (where the fuck is Luke? <3) I choose to focus on the triumpant return of Jason Schwartzman in Anderson film. :D

i could not stand the life aquatic but liked rushmore and to a lesser extent the royal tennenbaums.

'Darjeeling' to Open as Planned
Associated Press

...[Owen] Wilson's next big-screen appearance is in "The Darjeeling Limited," slated for release next month, in which he stars with Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman. In an eerie coincidence, Wilson plays a distraught man - bandaged throughout the film - who other characters imply has attempted suicide.

"Following a discussion between the cast and filmmakers, all have agreed `The Darjeeling Limited' will open as planned on September 29," Fox Searchlight said in a statement Wednesday. Wilson's publicist, Ina Treciokas, has declined to answer questions about whether the actor tried to take his own life. Wilson issued a statement Monday asking for privacy so he could "receive care and heal ... during this difficult time."

A message left with Treciokas on Wednesday was not immediately returned. Industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Media By Numbers said Wilson's personal issues could make marketing of his upcoming movies more difficult.

Maybe we get to meet Pagoda's family.

:D

sadly we do not, although he does appear in the film.

i saw this lastnight and got pretty much what i expected. its full of all the devices that make wes anderson's films great: amazing cinematography, great score, quirky charcters etc. it lacks what life aquatic lacked- a meaningful plot. it's also by far the least funny of all of his films. i still liked but in the end it was just a pretty movie with a paper-thin plot that happens to take place in india.

I just saw it tonight and enjoyed it very much!

Has anyone seen the prelude Hotel Chevalier? Apparently itunes has it, but it's saying I have to pay for it......does anyone know where I can just watch it for free?

hotel chevalier is good, has a lot going on behind the very little action in the short...

the film is FN FANTASTIC, shot well, designed well... the story isn't a "he says this and this happens" sort of thing - even less so than any other wes anderson film, this one resides alot in nonverbal communication - watch the actor's faces and body language - very important... much going on behind the first layer as well - nuances, eccentricities and set manipulations abound.

good times.

I really enjoyed this film, throughout I caught a lot of subtle humor and sibling arguments (brought me back to the days when I still lived with my brother). The drug overtones + subtle family drama kept me roaring throughout the film IMO.
I also enjoyed the cinematography and camera angels. It didn't look like a high budget film, which is probably why it was so unique, I also throughly enjoyed the Hotel Chevalier, which was unusually released at the Boulder theatre with Darjeeling limited. I thought the Hotel Chevalier was very appropriate for actually setting the mood, time, and experiences of Jason Schwartzman's character.

7.9/10 on IMDb ... wow

Must watch ...

I recommend to all insomniacs ... works far better than Z-Hypnotics or Benzo's ;)

i liked the darjeeling limited. i love searching the background of wes anderson's films looking for familiar faces such as

waris Ahluwalia=D, the film itself was just simple and lovely

i think i need to watch it again... i liked it, but i think i missed something.... maybe not. however i love all of wes anderson's other movies

If you've ever seen a Wes Anderson film before, then you know what to expect here. It's got the slow motion, the quick pans, the carefully balanced visual compositions, the eccentric characters that don't really act like people but like characters in a movie, the kick ass soundtrack, the recurring father figure issues.

Thematically, there's really nothing new. The plot does an awful lot of meandering; not necessarily a bad thing, but some people like their movies to take them somewhere specific. Don't look for that sense of purpose here. The characters are your standard loveable oddball fuck ups from an affluent family. The father figure is non existent but the spectre of his ghost haunts the present. With a movie like this you can pretty much argue that it says anything, because it doesn't really say anything except that life is complicated.

While it may not offer any particularly meaningful insight, the execution is nearly flawless. Visually this is my favorite Wes Anderson film. The exoticness of India gives the movie a special charm and Anderson's use of color is exceptional. From the saffron infused hotel room in The Hotel Chevalier, to the wide angles on crowded Indian streets, right down to the overhead shots on the luggage - all brilliant. There is hardly a single visual composition in the film that isn't worth commenting on; I especially liked the slow pan on the train with each compartment containing a different scene involving someone one of the brothers knew.

Wes Anderson is certainly showing a reluctance to try new stuff, and he's running the risk of alienating the critical community by sticking to the same template with all his films, and recycling the same actors. He should also shy away from the awful Jason Schwartzman and probably consult a therapist about why he hates his Dad. Wes Anderson fanboys will want to keep seeing movies like this, and to be honest I don't mind them although this one left a little to be desired with the screenplay. But it will be interesting to see what he does with Fantastic Mr. Fox.
