FWIW, The Royal Tenenbaums < Rushmore* < The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou < The Darjeeling Limited < Bottle Rocket

And I still really enjoy Bottle Rocket to put that to scale.

*The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore are basically interchangeable for me.

I put The Darjeeling Limited before Life Aquatic. And I haven't seen Bottle Rocket, but Royal Tenenbaums is definitely up there on my favourite movies list. As in, prob top 10 or thereabouts.

why on earth did i wait so long to see this. probably because rushmore is pretty much my third favourite movie of all time but i was disappointed by the life aquatic.

this movie is simply wonderful. for all the reasons described above and more. the script is sublime - terse in places but it's easy to move people with 100 words. much harder to do it with 5. my favourite line in the movie? "look at these assholes".

yes, if you like wes anderson, it seems a bit samey but who cares. if it ain't broke, don't fix it. i thought i'd get tired of all that slow-mo but i did not.

benefit hit on the visual composition and that non-literal train scene (the pan) surely is great, but the entire movie is drenched in the vibrant colours which make so many indian movies such a delight. there were two or three shot sin the movie which made me rejoice in the simple fact that i'm here to enjoy them.

finally, amara karan (rita) is gorgeous...

for me:

rushmore > darjeeling > tenenbaums > bottle rocket > life aquatic

:)

Hotel Chevelier is better than the actual movie, IMO. Plus Natalie Portman is naked for pretty much most of it. And not just a boobie, she shows her beautiful ass for most all of it.

As far as Darjeeling, kinda boring I thought.

Not a patch on The Life Aquatic or Royal Tenenbaums(<3 ) in my opinion.

As Benefit so rightly said, Anderson uses all of his old tricks & they're beginning to look very tired indeed.

Owen Wilson's & Adrien Brody's characters were whiny, self-indulgent idiots whom I cared for not a jot.

The only saving graces for me were Jason Schwarztman & Anjelica Huston's performances, the beautifully observed funeral scene & in particular the Indian landscape, which fed my anticipation for when I travel there myself next year.

As The Royal Tenenbaums so ably shows Wes Anderson is a very talented director capable of observing the minutiae of familial relationships, but in my opinion with this film he seemed to lose his touch for some reason.

2 stars.
