Movie Reviews Part 2 - The good, the bad and the ... rentals

^ It might not be the alcohol! I had the exact same reaction as you. I didn't care for the characters at all, I thought the character development was extremely poor considering how much time was dedicated to introducing them!

There were some parts which made me cringe a bit but on the whole I wasn't troubled by the gore [and normally I am!] As you said, I think the hype killed it for me. I was expecting so much from this movie and it didn't deliver at all. I was more scared in that aussie movie with Kylie Minigue [Cut?] than I was in this.

I still found Wolf Creek scary in parts but I think what killed it for me is the lack of suspense. Sure, John Jarrett did a fantastic job away from Better Homes and Gardens, and I think the actors did an ok job except for their pathetic English accents (see my previous review of WC in relation to this), the character development was also ok.

But the film had absolutely no "I'm so scared about what will happen next" for me. Sure, Mick was going to kill them and it was going to be bloody... oh wait the man managed to escape at the end for a perfect connection to the Peter Falconio murder case. Blah. :(

Cross-posted in mah' journal.

Friday night was roast vegetable pizza at Duckboy's with some bideo's [no, this isn't a spelling error - - Engrish people] I borrowed + Smirnoff Blacks.

Tarnation was amazing. So haunting, gritty and real it made me cringe but I couldn't look away.
For those who don't know, it's the story of David Caouette's life; a first time film maker who brings new and fresh meaning to what a documentary can really be.

David recalls his life and parts of his disabled Mother's through original home-shot film he began shooting at the tender age of eleven.
It's constructed entirely of records from his life journey - movie snippets, answering machine messages, letters, telegrams, photos, interviews and an imaginative and fitting use of text to help to build the story.

It's an unforgiving recount of a life filled with anger, hurt, abuse, depression and amazing love and devotion. It's become famous as being made for only $218 on a Macintosh and edited with the free iMovie software that came with it [of course when it was commercially released world wide a lot more money was spent on the songs that were used to avoid copyright infringements, etc.].

It's a fast paced, visually spell-binding and utterly original quality piece of film. *****.

Metropolitan was a little less exciting.

It was a low-budget film starring a cast full of somewhat bumbling new to the scene early adult actors who never looked entirely comfortable on screen.
It tells the rambling lengthy story of a group of preppy upper-class snobs coming to age in what looks like the 50's in Manhattan New York.

The scripting is tight and the characters are likeable, but the subject matter became old fairly quickly and there wasn't enough wow factor to keep us both interested in what was happening.
We both appreciated the language and the subtle humour lacing this but as a piece of modern film it didn't quite work. Still worth watching if you have nothing better to do. **.

Hostel

Saw this today with iamtha1. If you like tits and ass... be sure to go see this ;). It starts off very humorous [at least we thought so]... the only other people in the cinema were an elderly couple, and it didn't sound like they got the same enjoyment out of it as we did. Which, of course, means it can only be a good thing for people like us ;).

As to be said about many horror movies, it wasn't actually scary... but rather quite gruesome. Ok, very gruesome. There were parts where I had to cover my eyes.

I don't want to spoil it for those who want to see it. I thought it was pretty awesome though.

"You Bitch"
"No. You're my bitch. I get paid a lot of money for you"

^^ Agreed. I didn't find Hostel too scary because the concept wasn't realistic enough for me to think "Wow, that could happen to me and now I'm scared to be home alone." The 'revenge' scenario that ends the film made a bit silly for me as well.

But it was so gruesome that it shows I'm definitely not too desensitised to gore as yet.

There were some damn funny parts as well (namely when he purposefully ran over those people) and so many fake boobs.

Edit: The woman out of the elderly couple in the cinema with us, had to leave halfway through (she looked pretty sickened to me)... I was wondering what movie she thought she was seeing?! ;)

I also saw Hostel in the last week.

Enjoyed it :)

I liked the contrast between the different "peep" scenes; earlier in the film the guys are in the Amsterdam whorehouse where there's a different sexual encounter behind each curtain. Later, they're in the slaughterhouse with a different type of brutality behind each door.

Really interesting concept... the story that is, from the Eli Roth novel.

Also, just a quick note about the characters taking ecstasy in the film; made me reflect that probably 10 years ago, such a film would have probably had all the weed smoking but minus the pills.

Sorry, I need to stop relating everything to drugs lol =D

The funniest thing for me about Hostel was the fact that whilst I was slightly disturbed at some of the scenes in which innocent characters were being tortured I was roaring for blood when it came to the revenge sequences in the end :)

Seriously.... Do NOT pay to see this movie. Worst movie ever. I suppose it has full frontal nudity for like a second which you might enjoy.

The acting is horrible and the story line???? What storyline. I had free tickets and it was a waste of fuel to the movie theatre.

People actually walked out of the theatre! I've never seen that happen before. I heard there was an oscar nomination for this movie to ....I just dont understand.

I just felt like I had to warn everyone. It's not even worth your download time.

hey, i'm just going to merge this with the movie review thread, have a search before you post up new threads next time :)

ooops, sorry guys, my bad - when you merge the threads it gives the merged post the title of the thread you're moving with, so the name of spero's movie title was merged 8o!

if you read this spero, let us know what movie it was. apologies :\

I was wondering why he'd titled his post the same as the other thread!

I watched Dirty Dancing on Monday, for about the three thousandth time.

I heart Johnny.

Also saw Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights a little while ago, and was pleasantly suprised! While I love DD1, I'll freely admit it's actually quite a crappy movie. DD2 was pretty good, had more of an actual storyline to it than DD1.

I reckon it might be fun to try and guess what movie it is. It has a second of full-frontal nudity, was nominated for an Oscar and is apparently really crap... hmm.

I was happily surprised by DD2 as well! I went and saw it at the cinemas, and expected it was going to be a peice of crap. As a matter of fact, I really really liked it. I'm getting it on DVD.

Go the Swayze.

DD1 will always reign supreme, but in reality DD2 is probably the better of the two.

Don't ever watch The Rules of Attraction when you have a cold, you're alone and you haven't had much sleep.

It completely fucked with my head today but what else could I expect from Bret Easton Ellis? I'm pretty keen to read the book now though...

^^ the book is massively different, but still decent

V For Vendetta

Makes you want to listen to some Envy or Isis afterwards, its fucking core

The Magician.
It's an Australian film made to look like a documentry on this Hitman who's called the Magician; he makes people disappear. %)

I got told this morning it was made with $3,500. 8o
A couple of the actors aren't real good, but the lead guy keeps it together so, so well. It's really beleivable and if you didn't know it was a film, you'd think it was a real life documenty.

4.5 / 5 (the -.5 is because of the other actors lack of talent).
:)

Japanese Story

I really struggle when I watch Australian movies because I want to like them. I really, really do. And I feel bad when I don't.

In this movie a Japanese man comes to Australia to 'find himself' so he can be a better person for his family. The movie follows his journey through the outback with his guide [Toni Collette] who thinks he's here on a business trip. There are two things that make this movie bearable; Toni Collette and the scenary [I think the Australian outback is beautiful].

For me, the movie just tended to fumble along hoping that if there were enough meaningful looks and silences it would make the movie more profound. It had all the right elements and I honestly don't know why I didn't like it that much. It was kind of aiming for Lost in Translation but I think it misses its mark.

That's just my opinion though, JS won 8 AFI awards so I guess a lot of people loved it.
