^ the special features on the DVD has the breakdown of how they did that scene (with the swapped head). rubber dummy, heavy makeup and CG were all used.

^ was it like the ending in f & l though ?? :D

If you liked this (i did) then you must see his/their? earlier work: Shoulin Soccer. Best movie in the funny-but-good-kung-fu genre that ive seen
7/10

I have Shaolin Soccer on DVD. Its a total crack up!!

And Silvia Saint, I don't like Requiem either. I think that little cut scene they always play when the characters are taking drugs is overused and detracts from the reality of the situation. It seems like its just a movie that tells you "if you take drugs, you'll get fucked up"....Also the characters themselves seem hollow and you don't really empathise with them. Well I certainly don't. Maybe I'm just a heartless bitch.....

lostpunk: agreed, depp is an artist, which is way different from an actor that is a nameless cameleon or a 'fixed' personality. hunters writing is a stream of consciousness, he just knows how to describe a 'state of being', very cool

That is the best way of describing Depp I've ever heard. He has so much more depth than your average actor and brings something to every role he plays.

Agreed about Hunter. I can't read Rum Diary without wanting to go on a four day alcohol binge just because he makes it sound so fucking cool. Life would be so much more exciting to think like he does.

Inside I'm Dancing
Is and Irish movie about one young man with cerebal paulsy and another with a muscular degenerative disease- both stuck in wheel chairs and needing almost around the clock care to do anything.

I laughed and cried through this one- a lovely story about their developing friendship and how they deal with life.

highly recommended, however I'm unsure how easy it would be to get hold of in Australia

I'm going to watch "Infernal Affairs" again tonight.
Easily one of the best suspense/thriller spy vs. spy movie's i've seen, ever. The whole movie is endless high stakes, really REALLY tense.

Unfortunately, because it's good, but asian, it's getting an american remake. At least it's not going to be as bad as the 'remake' of JSA, though...
Hollywood...

The Motorcycle Diaries

Absolutely beautiful. It was far from overbearing or overly sentimental. I'm probably one of the few people who doesn't know a lot about Che Guevera's exploits but I knew enough to appreciate this movie and to understand how this period of his life was supposedly the catalyst for his hatred of the dichotomy between rich and poor. Beautifully shot and by god if you don't want to travel around South America after this movie then there is something seriously wrong with you. The two main characters are loveable, amusing and wonderful to watch.

I really can't fault this movie. Go see it.

^^ I wil go check it out.. I have seen it at VideoEzy a few times now but I have been swayed by other choices. Can't fault that review though.

Unfortunalye last night I saw:
Boogeyman

I swear it wasn't my choice!

poster1_full.jpg

Visited a couple of mates last night and in between games of Fifa and eating pizza we decided to put this on (they got it earlier).

Crap.

That is my one word review:

Crap.

Do not bother to see it. Flashy directing and it initially shows promise but it gets confused and ends up being a stupid movie too concerned with trying to make itself look like an intelligent one.

Barely anything is resolved in the end... when the "Boogeyman" finally makes an appearance he is anything but scary (unless you find dated CGI terrifying)... various parts in the movie make no sense at all...

Finally the only "scary" bit in the film are not from the story or the directing, but all the work of the editing room - as they splice in small quick cuts and montages of "freaky shit" with a sudden jarring noise out of the blue.
That isn't scary... it is startling.

And I didn't want to watch a "startling" movie. I wanted to watch a scary one.

0.5/5 stars

yep, it's an enjoyable flick. see, your taste doesn't suck after all ;)

I just finished watching the Motocycle Diaries (Wet weekend= DVD binge). Just when I thought I had cured my nomadic way's, now I want to hit the road again. Although I wouldn't have traded our Focus for that shitty Norton. I have no idea how minimum load would have held on.
Also loved the guitar sound track. Itching to bust some moves to a mambo now.

Also watched 4 episodes of The Muppet Show. Loved how despite being brought up on CGI such as The Incredibles and The Polar express, my 3 yr old is still blowen away by felt and paper mache.
"Manamana ........ Do do, da do do"

Schnouzerpuff - if you want to watch a scary movie, try House of Wax. Really.... it's actually pretty good. And seeing Paris Hilton die a horrible, gruesome death is very satisfying. =D

On the weekend, we watched Coach Carter; I agree with everything Fatz said, it's an awesome movie, quite stirring. Kind of like Rocky mixed with Dead Poet's Society.

Also saw White Noise, which was one of those thriller/suspense type horrors, about spirits communicating through static that comes from the TV or radio. Not bad. The doco's at the end about real recorded spirit voices were actually more interesting.

Maria Full of Grace
Maria, a 17 year old Columbian girl finds herself pregnant and jobless. She signs on to be a drug mule, transporting heroin pellets to New Jersey. After her arrival in north America everything unravels.

It's a low budget, raw movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I saw Crash on the weekend.
Hmmm. Probably not the best movie to watch on a comedown but I guess that means I got the full effect. A shocking movie addressing issues that we have all probably been associated with at some point in our lives.

Twist after twist, the plot has more than Chubby Checker. :|

7.5 out of 10.

Ive seen 2 animated movies this weekend; its interesting to compare.

Valiant: This had some aardman like funny moments (discounting the crappy wererabbit movie); but is still woefully short in genuine funny moments as well as failing to get broad appeal. It just seemed to lack the finesse and timing that really good comedy/action requires. Still not a bad first attempt from this new UK studio.
6/10 :|

Robots: I was warned off this one by a few scathing reviews -dick wads!-. I loved this movie. It had both belly laugh and giggle fit style humor littered all the way through. Timing, animation and the sheer volume of off the wall creative moments put this little gem above its peers such as Shrek and Monsters Inc. Nice one!
9/10 :D

This afternoon I saw Little Fish on DVD.

What an extraordinary movie. It stars Cate Blanchett (among other Australian acting icons such as Hugo Weaving) and is the story of Tracey, a 32 year old recovering heroin addict, trying to get her life together.

Set in Sydney's vietnamese district, Tracey runs a video shop, and has been clean for 4 years. She lives with her mum, and still has an good (but complicated) relationship with her former stepdad - a former pro-Rugby player and junkie who got her hooked on heroin to begin with. Hugo Weaving plays this character - one of the most interesting I've ever seen in a film. A sad, broken man, he has turned gay and is desperately addicted to drugs, yet still loves Tracey and her brother like a father.

Obviously, her mum, played by Noni Hazelhurst, is none too happy about the friendship. I never had much of an opinion of Noni Hazelhurst before seeing this movie - as a serious actor that is - but oh my god. She is absolutely dynamite in this. Her heartwretching portrayal of a single mum who is at once tough and scared, is fucking magnificent.

At one point there is a close up of her face when Tracey comes home late - at first her face is set in anger, and then you see her expression slowly crumple... from the eyes first, down to her set mouth, which trembles... and you see that the anger is actually masking an intense saddness and fear, and love. It was all portrayed in one facial expression. Brilliant.

This is a somewhat slow movie at times but the characters are so wonderfully drawn, so skillfully acted, the poignancy creeps up on you and squeezes the breath out of you by the end. By the end I was riveted - tears puddling down my cheeks, feeling every bit of what the characters were going through.

There is some beautiful imagery and cinematography in this, too. Watch out for the scene where Tracey - tempted to have a hit of the heroin she's just scored for her step-dad - stumbles into an RSL club and comes across a school choir singing Cold Chisels' "Flame Trees". One of the most perfect moments I can remember in film.

I highly recommend this masterful piece of Australian cinema. 9/10.

I saw Little Fish at the cinema way back when it first came out, quite enjoyed it too. It also caputers life in Sydney very well and doesn't exadurate it.

As for Maria Full of Grace, not a bad film, though I doubt anyone who hasn't been in to drugs would care much for it. Make sure you get the subtitles as it's not in English.

^I will never ever understand people who don't watch films if they're subtitled. :|.

Watched Memoirs Of A Geisha today - - - to escape the heat as much as anything.
My house-mate and I practically struggled through the crowds at the cinema only to ask 'What's on right now than we can see?.

I enjoyed it. It was a tad long, but the amazing photography really made up for that.
Bright vivid colours, extraudinary textures and sounds. I especially liked the way a scene would be framed by looking solely at the ground and people's feet before opening up to amazing subtle facial expressions.

The only part I was disappointed in was the fact that they were all speaking English. :(.
There were only specks of Japanese here and there, which I thought detracted from the overall sense of reality and drama.

Other than that a fantastic watch - - - and it made me cry. :|. ****/*****.

^^ I can see why...

Some people prefer not to have to read while they are watching... plus you lose some of the intricies of dialogue when putting the written version on the screen.

Finally, while reading you can also miss the subtleties of the facial movements of the actors... so you don't get the total appreciation of the scene or full effect of the the emotions that the characters on-screen are experiencing.

But despite all that I think it is a load of bollocks and I am happy to watch any good film - subtitled or not.

^Exactly my point. I guess I should have been clearer - - - I see people rent a DVD and take it back as it has subtitles. W. T. F.
I can see that yes, it's a lot more work but seriously.

In my experience I've watched some amazing films with subtitles, even better than those without.
It's not that hard to pick up the different emotions being portrayed - you have the words being spoken in front of you, as well as the actors facial and physical expressions.

Cultures aren't usually that different when you get down to it. :\.

I watched Memoirs of a Geisha today too... but in the comfort of our Air Con'd lounge room :)

I thought that it dragged a little, and TBH it wasn't as good as the book. I think that they left out key elements (such as when Chiyo was younger and with her family) which didn't make it as exciting or as enjoyable as the book.

3 out of 5 from me
