Movie of the week

ok, big thanks to FunkyAlfonzo for selecting a MoW - an excellent choice.

hope some of you were inspired to see it (again or for the first time) as a result of the post.

alright, let's try to maintain a little momentum here.

i present the quick and the dead directed by one of my favourite directors sam raimi.

a western featuring sharon stone and leonardo dicaprio. you have to be kidding right? perhaps.

i agree that the movie is seriously lacking in substance but it's got plenty of style to make up for it along with plenty of tongue in cheek performances from actors like gene hackman, gary sinise, russell crowe ("before he was famous") and lance henrickson, all paying a smirking homage to the the genre.

raimi has a lot of fun with this: over the top, unusual and off-kilter camera angles; light direction (he must have directed dicaprio to overact hugely and i think it pays off); etc.

there is a wisp of a plot here and if you don't see the 'twist' coming there's a good chance you dozed off.

high art this is not but it's an entertaining, enjoyable movie, with some great cheeseball lines (e.g. "I'm so damned fast I can wake up at the crack of dawn, rob two banks, a train and a stage coach, shoot the tail feathers off a duck's ass at 300 feet, and still be back in bed before you wake up next to me.") and lots of nice shots.

Awesome, thanks souny - I've seen this film once when I was really stoned and it just flew right over my head. I've been meaning to watch it again and get my head around it, and that'll help. I love Terry Gilliam, so can't wait to give it a proper go...

I think when it comes down to it, and I let go of my love of drugs and irony, I prefer Hud to the big Lebowski. This movie always leaves me brethless; I watch it on christmas day the way other people go to church or spend time with family. By the end I can feel a lump in my throat and tears behind my eyes (of joy perhaps).

There is, aside from lovely production value and acting, an interesting ongoing theme of linear and cyclical time, a battle between good and evil, a battle between individual genius and the robber barrons.

yes, a resounding 4 out of 4. This film is, as is all to often said, a triumph.
 
I've never seen the Hudsucker Proxy (or heard of it for that matter). I'm definitely going to check this one out as I'm a big Lebowski fan!
 
This is such a great film filled with spot on characters and some whimsical charm from the Coen brothers. I don't think it deserved to bomb at the box office.

It's been a little while, but I'm sure the scenes in the mailroom and manufacturing area reminded me of Charlie Chaplins 'Modern Times'.
 
Hudsucker and Brazil -- two great films. Each Coen bros movie is so different, that it's hard to compare them against one another, but Hudsucker and Lebowski are my favorites. Brazil, on the other, probably goes into a category with Lawrence of Arabia as one of the best films of all time. (imo)

And on the narrator as a minor character thing in Hudsucker...notably done by Somerset Maugham in The Razor's Edge as well. Cool story device.
 
While I find brazil to be wonderful, and a great example of the strong points of Auture theory, it didn't grab me on a very emotional level. That may just be a side-effect of being a little older (though I doubt it). I gotta say, I really like the D.P. the Bros. C use. Thats my primary reason for loving so much of their work so passionatly.
