"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
Candice Williamson was getting sick from withdrawal. She craved a fix, but she was at her parents' house in Bromley, Ky.

She drew a bath and quietly prepared a syringe of heroin.

"I was going through the sickness," the 19-year-old heroin addict recalled. "I told my mom I was going to take a bath. I was sitting on the floor.

"She walked in. She took it from me. It was really bad."

For Robin Knott, turning the doorknob of her bathroom and seeing her then 18-year-old daughter with a needle was the end of suspicion that Williamson was addicted to heroin. It was the beginning of Knott's determination to fight for her daughter's life -- even if it might crush their relationship.

Knott turned to a friend in her anguish, and he recommended she file a Casey's Law petition to get her daughter treatment.

Knott filed the petition and told her daughter, who was living at her boyfriend's Grant County, Ky., home.

Williamson declared her hate for her mother.

"I told her, 'You can hate me. But you'll be alive hating me,' " Knott said.

Casey's Law allows parents or other concerned people to petition the court to order involuntary drug treatment for an adult.

Ohio has a similar law that was enacted in March 2012.

The Kentucky Legislature enacted the Matthew Casey Wethington Act for Substance Abuse Intervention in 2004, named for Casey Wethington of Kenton County, who died of a heroin overdose Aug. 19, 2002, at 23.

His mother, Charlotte Wethington, initiated the law, which is modeled after one in Florida. She has been pushing for such laws throughout the country ever since.

At a petition hearing in early May, Kenton County (Ky.) District Judge Ann Ruttle let Williamson go to her mother's home instead of jail, cautioning her that if she fled, she'd be tracked down and jailed.

A 'good girl' addicted

"My daughter was a good girl," Knott said. "I never, not one time, had to go to the school. She graduated from Walton High School with honors. She wanted to be a nurse."

Williamson described herself as "the good one."

"I had a 3.4 grade-point average," she said, waving halfheartedly toward a diploma on her mother's living room wall.

She said her parents were free with her because she earned good grades and kept a job.

By the time she met her boyfriend during her senior year, she had already dabbled in prescription painkillers. He had, too. They hung out with friends who were unabashed about taking drugs, she said.

One day, Williamson gave a friend a ride and asked for gas money. The girl's boyfriend offered heroin instead.

Williamson was reluctant until he told her it was an opiate, "like pain pills," she said. "I snorted it."

"After that I said, 'I don't want to do that ever again -- because I like it way too much.' "

What started as a one-time pay-off escalated to a $140-a-day addiction to heroin by snorting. She worked, but money was tight. Her mother said once her daughter junked a car her grandmother had given her for $300 to buy heroin.

It wasn't long before Williamson developed a tolerance to it. When snorting no longer worked, she started shooting it up.

Shooting up is more powerful, she explained, so it gets you high at a cheaper cost.

Waiting for treatment

In her first days without heroin, Williamson endured sleep-deprived nights with jerking legs and aching muscles. Now, she sleeps better and attends Al-Anon and Nar-Anon meetings when she can.

At a recent meeting, she listened to a mother express hopelessness about her child's addiction. Williamson told her about how her own mother used Casey's Law to save her life.

In the hours after the hearing that ordered her into treatment, Williamson was sure her boyfriend would quit for her: "He loves me," she said, tears filling her downcast eyes. Within a week, she broke up with him.

Out on her parents' deck recently, Williamson dragged on a cigarette, glanced at the sky and pondered what she might do with her newly clean life. She said she wasn't sure about the medical field anymore; she'd heard it's a bad idea for recovering addicts, with all the drugs around it.

After a few minutes, the teen shrugged it off, concluding, "I don't have to know. I've got time."

And she smiled.

Casey's Law allows parents or other concerned people to petition the court to order involuntary drug treatment for an adult.

The treatment industry should jump all over this and lobby for it to be passed in every state. It's probably unconstitutional but that doesn't seem to matter any more. They should muster their mobs of righteous moms to besiege their congresspersons with languorous supplications.

What's the point? If you force someone to go and they don't want help or deny they have a problem, then isn't it true that rehab programs/treatments doesn't work? I mean I guess every now and then someone may go and once they are sober they realize hey this is great but won't most just relapse?

I read the states attorney's page in that county in Kentucky and it states that anyone can petition to have a substance abuser put into treatment but that the petitioner has to. A) prove that person is a danger to themselves or others and
B) agree to pay for all the costs of treatment/rehab etc. (Which it states is usually very costly).
C) there has to be evidence that the substance abuser would actually benefit from treatment

I imagine that the cost alone would deter a lot of people from petitioning, do you think?

What the fuck is the point of having a child that hates you? Serious question time.

I'd rather OD in my parents house with a needle in my arm and have them find me that way, than to actually hate my parents for life and shit like that.

Just saying.

I think that there are a lot of variables in these situations that need to be taken accounted for.

Feel free to explain what you meant by this.

I'd just rather die now instead of living a life where I hated my parents. I think I am safe in saying that. I'm too much of a big hearted person to want to live life hating the people who brought me into it.

sometimes I wanna OD and die and I DON'T hate my parents lol.
And why is the girl attending al-anon and nar-anon? She should be in aa/NA/ha

Clean? Hardly.

I'll tell her what she can ponder while glancing at the sky: at what age will she die of lung cancer.

For the record, I don't have anything against smokers. However, smokers who consider themselves clean are hypocrites. And lastly, smokers who consider themselves clean and who also preach about staying away from drugs are a joke.

P.S. - If an opioid habit wasn't so bloody expensive, I for one know without a doubt that I'd still be using today. The financial aspect is what really fucked me over and made me start on the juice.

^Did you actually read the article? Chick has no animosity toward her mother.

You'd hate your parents for life because they dragged you to rehab :??

My mother pulled some shit like this on me, and it didn't get me clean. Shit, I had a mini-stroke from drugs not two months after I got out, but it did ultimately help me & got me out of the shit I was in at the time. Not sure if I agree with these laws, however.

Fucking lol. Nice try, sweetheart.

^ if they were so in love they would stick through this thick or thin. My g/f actively uses in front of me and its not a big deal to me (clean for 7 months, well subs) fuck I even fix it and shoot her sometimes for fun

My point is if you actually love someone not only would you try to help but you would never view it as choosing heroin over you, because you were there and I bet you made poor decisions because of drugs. It's just like any other relationship obstical and if you can not be clean with someone using around you unles you live in a hole opiates will find you again. I feel putting myself as close to the needle as possible without slipping is like strength training for not using

I think Obamacare will mandate insurers to cover rehab, and since everyone will be forced to have insurance (more or less), the floodgates may open for the industry.

I think things have to get really bad before they get really good: that people will not revolt until the youth are being herded into chemical re-education camps en masse. I wish for opioids to be legalized before I am old. Is that feasible?

Let me know how well that works out for you. No offence, but how are you 'strength training' when you're not even clean? There's a huge difference between being on maintenance & being clean. I don't want to shoot any more heroin, so I'm going to seek people who aren't using. I've been around it many times & stayed clean, but I'm not going to delude myself into believe that's remotely healthy.

Been working for 8 months, I know what you mean the subs are my sheild but I also have 0 desire to go back never really liked it in the first place. I trust myself enough to know that I can keep it up I mean why not isn't the whole thing my choice? My main point is you would not leave someone you loved because they are still using

It hasn't been working if you've been on bupe.

If I were dating someone & they started shooting heroin, I would tell them to get clean. I'd leave them if they didn't. I care about myself more than some broad. But like you say, it's all personal choice.

But you would not NEED to hate your parents for life.
You could choose to understand their perspective and forgive them, since they just wanted the best for you.

The parent's job is first to keep the child alive. I can completely understand what the mom was thinking.
All other jobs - teaching the child to be a good person, or respect others, or have self-confidence - come after keeping the child alive.
This is one reason why parents do what they do, and teach what they teach.
Their job is SURVIVAL. Of the child, of the family...
Therefore, all children need to realize this in order to go back over what they have learned from their parents, and to change things from a SURVIVAL perspective to a THRIVE perspective.

Wow back from rehab and bashing people on maintenance classy.

So if that broad (assuming you love her) would want to start MMT or BMT as a means to try to stop using, with the long term goal to be to stabilize on an appropriate dosage of methadone/bupe (enough to completely halt heroin cravings and use), and, eventually taper off the maintenance drug - what that not cut it for you? It can be rather difficult to simply stop, go through PAWS and never look back (cravings, etc.). Perhaps I'm a wimp but I found it to be impossible.
