Film Most Depressing Movies?

The Fountain (2006).
It's simultaneously the most beautiful and the most depressing movie I've ever seen.

Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Dancer in the Dark (2000)

Both movies had me holding back tears. They are also both incredible films. I think 'Dancer' is the saddest movie I've ever seen and it's also one of my favourite movies ever.

"Match Point". Who knew Woody Allen could try and succeed so well at making such a horribly depressing film where the bad guy completely wins in the end? Well made though.
"No Country For Old Men" was sure dark, but it did have the redeeming qualities of a great cast, great script, great direction. ¡Javier Bardem!

Christine (2016).
About the life and passing of 1970's news reporter Christine Chubbuck, the first person who ever killed themselves on live television. It's incredibly depressing.

'shame' (2011) is pretty dark

Blow makes me cry without fail at the end because I can relate to being separated from your child.

What really depresses me though is bad movies you think will be good. Mad Max Fury Road was one of the biggest disappointments of my life. I was going to go to the cinema to see that and I'm so glad I didn't.

Yes. It completely lacks the freshness and social commentary the first movie has.

I like Alex van Warmerdam movies, especially Grimm. It's completely based on the fairy tales of Grimm but set in (then) contemporary The Netherlands and Spain.

It's not that depressing, but Alex van Warmerdam chops people and our pretentions about our noble motives completely to firewood.

And that can be bleak indeed.
