More than 70 people have overdosed from dangerous batches of narcotics -- apparently heroin laced with the painkiller fentanyl -- on the West Side since Tuesday, according to city health and fire officials. Emergency crews have responded to 74 cases over 72 hours, according to Larry Langford, spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department. "It’s up significantly," he said.

An alert from the Chicago Department of Public Health and obtained by Chicago Tribune said the drugs were bought at two locations on the West Side. A sample of heroin recovered by Chicago police may have contained fentanyl, authorities said.

Police are looking into whether a man who died of an apparent drug overdose in the East Garfield Park neighborhood had ingested narcotics from the dangerous batch, according to law enforcement sources.

The victim was found dead in a third-floor apartment Thursday night in the 3300 block of West Ohio Street. His identity was not available.

Chicago police and federal investigators turned their attention to fentanyl in the mid-2000s when dozens of people died of overdoses, which included cases of fentanyl mixed with other drugs.
Dr. Steven Aks, chief of toxicology and an emergency physician at Stroger Hospital, said he’s aware of nine patients who sought treatment by the Thursday afternoon at the hospital.

He did not know what drug caused the overdoses.

Paramedics and other Fire Department personnel have been equipped with extra Narcan -- a drug typically used to reverse heroin overdoses -- for any additional victims, according to Langford.
“We don’t know if it’s the beginning, middle or end of the surge,” he said.

Is naloxone OTC in Chicago? Given how much dope there is in that city, you'd think it would be. Then again, the purpose of drug law enforcement is to see junkies dead, so I wouldn't be surprised if naloxone wasn't available to users.

In all honesty I think the DEA is somehow behind this, as far fetched as it seems. DEA has dramatically increased operations in the midwest region against opiate trafficking and prescribed opiates found on the streets.

I suggest you come up with a concrete theory. Unstructured paranoia is a recipe for disaster.

yeah. DEA probably wouldn't do something like this , but I wouldn't be surprised if they ''funneled'' in heroin in the Chicago market somehow to see how it would traffic across the country.

I'll get some more links and possible evidence tomorrow, honestly something doesn't feel right about this personally.

"U.S. Attorneys and Federal Law Enforcement Leaders Convene at Detroit Summit to Target Opiate Pain Pill and Heroin Trafficking"

"The initiative also includes a commitment by each United States Attorney to engage in district-wide anti-heroin and prescription pill programs. For example, in the Eastern District of Michigan, United States Attorney Barbara McQuade has enacted Project HOPE (Heroin, Opioid Prevention and Enforcement). Project HOPE includes the targeting of drug traffickers whose distribution results in the death or overdose of the purchasers of the drugs. Project HOPE also dedicates more resources towards prosecuting heroin and pill traffickers generally."

This may be a dumb question, I have some experience but opiates were never my DOC, but why is lacing heroin with fent so popular? Is it just to increase the "nod" and make dope seem stronger than it really is?

Because in my experience fentanyl is far from universally liked by people who use heroin...

fent also has a shorter high than dope. users come back more regularly. I got accustomed to bags of real heroin that kept me well all day. Then one day I shot bags that were knock you on your face potent, however I was sick in a matter of hours. Of course I went back and got more.

I also think that the fent analogues are pretty well cheaper than actual heroin.

looking back on last night my theory looked pretty stupid. anyway my new guess is heroin cut with fent is due to lack of other products to cut with and the cheapness of fent.
i'm sure the DEA is going to investigate all the OD's though as of project HOPE.

does anyone think el chapo's escape may have something to do with this?
change of cartel decisions?

I live on the upper westcoast and people, say, they have, real, china, idk of the, same, stuff people, are, dieing from but u can, tell the difference between heroin and fent.and if u know,ur getting fent make, sure u know you how,to dose, properly.but yes, ther has, been alot of people coming in the hospitaal with heroin related, issues.I ws in ther ny self last week, nothing to do,with dope but talked to the dr and he confirmed

Remember the "fast and furious" gun buying fiasco? Yeah,if you can't trust the DEA, who can you trust? Anyhow, are the junkies lining up to purchase the "killer dope".
Unfortunately, probably

I know what you mean, if I heard a bag was killing folks I just rationalized it to myself by saying "those people dont have my tolerance, and I can save money by using less.."

I always ended up raising my tolerance with it, and needing more and more. So in the end it was not that economical.
