Police arrest five in drug bust

Stillwater Police Department officers arrived at 523 N. Stanley about 8 p.m. to serve a simple city warrant to a man residing there.

Hours later, a hazmat team left with a trailer full of evidence from a drug bust not seen in Stillwater in decades.

"We came up to serve the warrant," said officer Thomas Comstock. "When they opened the door, it was like ‘Cheech and Chong' all over again."

After wading through the marijuana smoke, Comstock said he and fellow officers found what appeared to be a well-developed mescaline and dimethyltryptamine lab. Dimethyltryptamine, or DMT as it is commonly called, and mescaline are psychedelic drugs, Comstock said.

Comstock said police arrested five people ages 17 to 23, some of which may have been students or former students at Oklahoma State University.

A call to the Payne County Jail revealed the arrestees had not been booked there, and calls to the Stillwater Jail were not immediately returned.

Officer Royce Stephens was the lead officer on the case, and said this was only the second DMT lab he can remember.

Stephens said it has been more than a decade since he can remember hearing of a mescaline bust in Stillwater.

The process of making mescaline and DMT is different than making methamphetamines, Stephens said.

But he said there are still dangerous chemicals in play, which is why the hazmat crew was summoned.

"If these guys can make it, it must not be too hard," Stephens said.

Hazmat crews finished sealing up evidence and diluting dangerous chemicals around 10:30 p.m. And Comstock said he was ready for a break after being at the house for hours.

"(The arrestees) already got a chance to sit down," he said. "We haven't had a break."

no arrests, no priors. what is the likely sentence time? guesses have a +10 or -10 scale of correct.
 
I understand why you chose to post this in Legal Discussion, but because there really isn't a question being asked, I think it might be better in Drug Culture or maybe Current Events and Politics. carltonville, can you say what you'd like to see discussed in this thread so I can know where to move it to?

One issue I see is the quantity of mescaline and DMT being manufactured or extracted. If this was one person or a few people making it for their personal use only, and they can demonstrate that, maybe the D.A. and the judge will go easier on them. They might even be able to get drug diversion. If they were manufacturing for sale, I think the government will consider these drugs to be the same category as LSD, and the penalties will be quite severe.

I feel really bad for them. The D.A. and the judge will go home and drink wine or whiskey after they put these defendants in prison for a long time, when I'd bet the annual deaths from mescaline and DMT are exactly zero.

They need to hire the best criminal defense lawyer in town, pulling out all stops to do so.

It's remarks like this that anger me. How does he know how hard it is? He's admitted to only seeing it once before, and for some reason he brought up the fact that methamphetamine production is different, like what does that have to do with anything? I like how he just assumes that the 5 state college students are stupid because they're making DMT. Id like to give him a bunch of mimosa bark, napthene and sodium hydroxide and see how he does at creating DMT, pig bastard would probably just shoot the bark and hope DMT popped out.
 
Why in the fuck did they just open the door for them? The way the article was written, it sounds like they just came up to the door and went knock knock knock and they opened the door right up. You gotta be a little more careful when you're manufacturing drugs in your house.
 
This makes me sad. I've had some amazing fun partying in Stillwater and these guys were doing less harm than the hundreds/thousands of drunk drivers that are out there on a given night.
 
So if you're put on probation for manufacturing DMT, aren't you violation of that probation every time you go to sleep and dream? What a bunch of shit.
 
What a shame that people producing DMT, and mescaline , instead of methamphetamine are arrested!! I am not saying that I like to see anyone arrested for drugs , but it would have been much better for the cops to bust a meth lab, or arrest the Mexican Drug Cartels that flood the US with tons of crystal meth each year. Meth is far more harmful to the body than DMT, and mescaline combined. And the cops are obviuosly naive to the level of skill it takes to produce mescaline, and DMT, both of which can be obtained from natural sources but are also made using totally sythentic means. Most DMT that I have seen was not produced from Bark or natural sources, it was made with chemical precursors,and highly refined into a smokable crystal form. Also the mescaline I have seen produced was usually syntheticly made, although several times when peyote was available it was extracted from the cacti. Also DMT can be extracted from "shrooms" as well as certain treebarks,and vines.!!

Its crazy how the government use to test people on LSD but if you sell it illegally, its major jail time.

As you stated above, alcohol is consumed by these judges & prosecutors & many will DUI but hey, its okay because they are our hypocritical leaders of our society. Lets not forget how many people alcohol & tobacco kills per year vs. how many people are killed by all other drugs combined, its a joke.

Some people just dont have common sense or maybe they were so high on good weed, they thought they were dreaming. I mean, the whole house has weed smoke in it & around the front inside door, you're manufacturing product & you open the door like you're welcoming family during the holidays, gimme a break.......8)

During that inspection officers found the ecstasy in both rear quarter panels by using a fiber optic scope. In all, almost 53 pounds of the drugs were discovered. That equates to almost 76,000 pills with a street value of more than $100,000.

At least the prices weren't too inflated. I wouldn't mind a PCP/MDMA pill for a couple bucks.

edit: I didn't see anything about pipes in the article. but who knows with "ecstasy" these days.
