Morality of Eating Meat

since you think i'm crazy, it must be really easy for you to counter everything i've said

I've been vegetarian for 10 years, vegan for about 3 years. My reason for abstaining from meat is an unwillingness to participate in the maltreatment and slaughter of innocent creatures for human enjoyment/consumption.

Someone asked me recently why I feel that killing animals for food is cruel while killing plants for food is not? I absolutely believe that plants have some type of consciousness and experience pain on some level, although maybe not in the realm of human perception. I could come up with no reasonable argument why I differentiate between vegetables and animals, except that animals suffer during the production process whereas plants, even if grown in mass quantities, do not suffer unless they are exposed to chemicals. When a plant grows, it just lives, and would not experience the discomfort of a chicken in those warehouses full of rows of cages.

Do you think plants suffer or experience pain?
 
cause you know you don't have a predator
if you still had one, i bet you'd agree to stop predating others if that allowed you not to be predated anymore

Alright, I'll admit that your moral pronouncements would carry a lot of weight in a world populated entirely by plants =D

I don't. Mainly because they have no reason to, seen from an evolutionary perspective atleast.
 
I don't think experience can be explained from an evolutionary perspective. I could imagine humans functioning as meat-robots. This draws us back to the question, why experience?

Why not? It seems evident that a plant with the ability to sufffer would require more energy than a plant without this ability. As with all other organisms going through evolution, this disadvantage of a higher energy requirement would, at least at some point in time, be the cause of its extinction. This is what happens to species with physical traits that are disadvantegous, why would species posessing disadvantegous psychologial traits be exempt from this phenomenon?

That's true, but the main difference between a human and a plant is that the plant can use its ability to suffer for nothing at all. Humans can use it to run, hide, fight back or whichever action it decides to take, thereby bringing on this trait to its offspring.

Churchhill must have never read Animal Farm :D

Im kind of a hypocrite, I cant kill an animal while having to look at it (I grew up on a farm and could never kill a pig, let alone shoot a deer). If it is already dead and prepared to where all sentiment is gone I never even think about it, just dig in!

I agree with the first part, but not with the second. I dont understand why people think they should be better, more important, or have more rights to life and happiness than animals. Its not really a point one can argue, more personal opinion, but thats just how I feel and always will. Just dont get it, because when I look at an animal I feel the same as looking at a human.

I am a vegetarian. Its a personal choice, I dont judge people who want to eat meat. I dont think its neccessarily morally wrong, the BASIC act of eating meat, however, the mass production of meat in our society and the way animals are treated in that system, is morally wrong, IMO. I think if people want to eat meat, the right thing would be to raise and slaughter it yourself, or hunt it yourself. But that obviously wont happen anytime soon.

Ive been a vegetarian for almost a year now and I know it was the right choice for me. I really sleep better at night because of it. I know Im not really saving any animals but it feels good for me to know Im not really contributing to something I feel is wrong. I also feel much healthier since becoming a vegetarian so thats awesome as well.
