Monster Beverage Corp. (MNST)’s energy drinks have been cited in the deaths of five people in the past year, according to incident reports that doctors and companies submit to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The reports said the victims consumed Monster drinks prior to their deaths, Shelly Burgess, an FDA spokeswoman, said today in a phone interview. The FDA said the incidents, which are voluntarily reported, are considered to be allegations, and no conclusion is drawn until an investigation is completed. Shares of Corona, California-based Monster fell the most since 2008.

The FDA reports are being used by parents in Maryland who sued Monster last week, claiming the drinks led to caffeine toxicity that killed their 14-year-old daughter. Senator Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, is asking the FDA to consider caffeine limits on energy drinks after emergency room visits involving such products jumped 10-fold from 2005 through 2009.

“FDA continues to evaluate the emerging science on a variety of ingredients, including caffeine,” Burgess said in an earlier e-mail.

The five death reports, and a sixth in 2009, were among 37 adverse reaction reports since 2004 that mentioned Monster drinks, according to a log of incidents that health professionals, companies and the public voluntarily recorded with the FDA. The agency has said it’s working on draft guidelines that would ensure energy drinks are safe.

Monster fell 14 percent to $45.73 at the close of New York trading, erasing all the gains the stock had made this year.

Why blame Monster for this instead of the people who made the choice? Hell, why blame 4-LOKO for what happened to some of the kids who drank it? Furthermore, why aren't they going after the easiest way to consume the most caffeine--plain old caffeine pills?

Honestly though, its like saying we shouldn't have knives around because some people purposefully cut themselves with them.

Is it a coincidence they used a child martyr to try and smear monster?

Always hiding behind children, the flag, or religion when you can't form a coherent reason based logical argument.

Here in Canada, roughly 1/4 of the can of any energy drink is warning text telling you not to drink more than one can, and it can cause cardiac fuckery and Bad Stuff if overdosed, and it's not for children or pregnant women.

Not to mention, the levels of caffeine in Monster and relatives aren't even that high. Strong coffee or green tea can be just as strong caffeine-wise. In fact, Starbucks makes equally disgusting "beverages" with equal or greater caffeine per serving but I see no kids dying of caffeine tox from drinking Frappuchinos.

This is just child martyrdom. "Think of the children, ban drugs!!!!!!!!!!"
But drinking espresso, or 3+ cups of strong coffee a day, is your God given right as Americans.
Not to mention smoking and alcohol consumption. The hypocrisy makes me almost sick...

^ I understand what you are saying, sekio.
But the Monster drinks aren't just caffeine - there are various other things in them.
I don't know for sure if anyone has researched what happens when people consume large amounts of caffeine with taurine and ginseng. The combination may be dangerous, at least for some people (or for children). Ginseng alone is enough to get my heart to go fast if I take too much, and with the other stimulants, I can imagine that it might affect people strongly.
I would say it should not be sold to children. I would not give my children even one-tenth that dose of caffeine, though people here regularly give their kids green tea without thinking twice.

I'd like to know how she purchased the monster drink? Where I live you have to be 18, just like buying cigarettes. The warning statements on the can are there for a reason. The girl shouldn't have drank that much = pure teenage stupidity.

Where were her parents while she was guzzling that shit? And how do they know she drank exactly 2 whole cans of it?

i love monster drinks. i'll be pissed if monster is forced to the change formula.

Here in the UK you get I.D'd if your under 16, trying to buy energy drinks.
Heck, I'm 21 and in my local shop, they've I.D'd me for buying energy drinks.

To be honest, there could be some truth, that monster energy drinks in high doses could be harmful. I haven't researched it and have no real will to do so.

The fact they have warnings on the can and there's an age limit (not sure about other countrys), goes some way to them not being responsible.

If someone bought a bottle of Vodka, drank the whole thing and ended up in AnE needing there stomach pumped, its not the fault of the company selling the vodka.
Or if someone buys a pack of cigarettes and they eventually die from lung cancer.... its not the fault of the company selling the cigarettes.

If people aren't willing to read the labels... then why should they get sympathy when they harm themselves.

BUT

as others have said, there are other ingredients in the can and if Monster haven't researched what these ingredients will do when combined in higher doses, the blame is on them.

Will just have to wait to find out more and see what unfolds.

Children and teens are drinking coffee, eating "foods" high in sugar, and many are smoking. It's all par for the course. If they ban energy drinks then they should ban the rest.

As long as the working class have to work absurd hours to survive, there will always be a use for stimulants.

I agree with the majority of what's already been said. If people aren't smart enough to read labels or ingest large amounts monster without seeing or realizing that it might affect them negatively that's there own fault. Also, is there any real way of knowing definitively if it was really Monster that caused these deaths?

Monster tastes like a funeral made of candy... fucking terrible. I have been hearing these stories for years. When the drinks started getting popular I had a friend who drank 4 redbulls and snorted a quarter gram of coke. He said he was pretty sure that was it for him. I told him he would have deserved it. Simple as that, dumb people who do dumb shit like drink 4-8 redbulls or monsters without shame probably deserve to go to the hospital. I have never been to the hospital for any type of toxicity and I have driven around in a truck FULL of monster drinks (friend was a rep) and have had access to all the same drugs that we read about idiots dying from daily.

Here in Canada we don't have to show ID to buy those drinks at all. A 4 year old kid could buy one I'm sure. I enjoy the no name redbull 'redrain' and it never causes me any real problems aside from sweaty hands.

I don't think its up to government to play nanny on this one. Not to mention years of anecdotal relative safety, people take bigger risks all the time. Why should the nooks and crannies have to be researched for someone to freely put something in their own body?

Dunno about you guys, but I was a stupid asshole when I was 14. I Remember drinking like 5 red roosters and wanting to die for like 6 hours. that taught me though, it really did.

But srsly, shit'll get real if they start going after caffeine.

I guarantee that won't happen, maybe energy drinks but not coffee or tea. Its quite a large part of what makes the world go 'round.

What you say makes sense. I don't want the product to be taken off the market while it is researched - and even if it is discovered that taurine + ginseng can lead to heart attacks in certain individuals, I would not want it made illegal. (For adults.)
What I want is solid scientific information on the interaction of the drugs.
Real drug education.
A warning - if necessary - would be good. "Do not take this product if you have condition X"
And no selling to children.
I think that the gov. should "play nanny" where children are involved with (certain) drugs.

Monster Beverage Corp. energy drinks have been cited in the deaths of five people in the past year, according to incident reports that doctors and companies submit to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. A wrongful death suit has been filed against Monster Energy Drink by the parents of Anais Fournier, 14, who died six days after consuming two large cans of the highly caffeinated beverage before suffering cardiac arrests. The FDA is investigating five other heart-attack deaths and one non-fatal heart attack that have all been associated with the beverage.
