Hello everybody :)

My doctor just told me I have mono :( I think it was a combination of finals at uni, and helping organize a HUGE social awareness festival on campus.

Has anyone here had mono? I can only movie from my couch to my bed a vice versa :( It feels like my bones hurt.

What did you guys eat (if you've had it)? Drink? How long does it take to heal? I'm going to Seattle at the end of may and want to get better before that.

Thanks for reading everybody!

You don't get mono from stress... it's a disease that has to be passed from person-to-person from my experience, anyway.

I had it a few years ago, got it from sharing cigarettes/cups/pipes with a friend who had it. It had not effect on my hunger, I was just exhausted and could barely get out of bed for five months.

You won't be getting over it by the end of May.... mono lasts somehow around 3-6 months, sometimes longer, and there is no medical cure for it so you just have to ride it out. For me it lasted five months... just get tons of sleep and rest and hope for the best.

Oh no, girl!!

I am so sorry to hear that :( :(

I had got mono back in the end of Feburary... I'm fine now. Each case is different, some people like poor Mia ^ get it for monthes, and others get over it in a few weeks. I would say I was mostly recovered after a month, probably fully recovered after a month and 1\2.

Basically you will be exhasted. You will need lots of sleep! And it's important to keep hydrated.

My mono was accompanied by a really bad sore throat... I had to go to the hospital for a few days because it was so swollen that I couldn't eat or drink so I had to get fluids IVed into me so I wouldn't dehydrate. That to me was the worst part... it hurt so bad! It took about a week and 1\2 after the intial diagnosis before I could eat regular food, although my appetite wasn't that great anyway.

Just make yourself eat and drink... rest a lot... don't do anything strenous! No exercising for awhile, because it could rupture your spleen (the spleen sometimes enlarges when you get mono).

Good luck babe, hope you are feeling better soon :( :(

EDIT: I ate lots of soft foods like applesauce, yogurt, ice cream, mac n cheese, fruit and vegetable juices, Gatorade.
Your doctor may give you something for pain. I got tylenol w\ codiene and some antibiotic that made me constipated :/

^did it affect your hunger levels?

half the people i know who've had mono say they lost tons of weight because they never wanted to eat anything, and the other half they say they gained tons of weigth because it didn't affect their hunger but they couldn't exercise like they normally did.

it had no effect on my hunger :p

Yeah I can't eat at all.

I've tried to think of food that tastes good, and nothing comes to mind :( not even my favorite food (falafel and hummus).

My girlfriend made me mac and cheese, and that wasn't bad.
I'm sleeping as much as I can and drinking gatorade mixed with water.

I know it's not good for me, but smoking pot is the only thing giving me an appetite. Just a few hits, and I can stomach *some* food.

Thank god my neighbors are awesome pot dealers and let me go a few days until I get paid for a bag.

Awww im sorry ^ I had that same problem... everything tasted weird b\c of the medication they put me on. It sucked.

To answer your question Mia, at first my appetite decreased a LOT because my throat was so sore and I was so tired and achy that food was the last thing on my mind... I lost maybe 7 pounds in about 2 weeks. After that though my appetite returned to normal and I gained all the weight back. I didn't really put on extra weight because honestly, im already a bit of a couch potato so my metabolism is adjusted to not much exercize LOL.

I still can't believe you had mono for 5 mo. girl, that must've sucked... i mean, i have heard of people who are sick for that long, but I couldn't imagine!!!

Sleater, hopefully you will get better before then. It's possible that by the end of May you will feel up going to Seattle... you won't be 100% better, but you might be well enough to make the trip and have fun- as long as you take it easy while you are there!!!

I thought the hardest part was not being able to drink (alcohol)... I was diagnosed THE DAY AFTER MY 21st BIRTHDAY!!! that sucked. I felt kinda crappy the week before, but then the day after my bday I was like really really sick so I went to the doc and they're like "oh, we tested ur blodd and you have mono" :p

i couldn't swallow for weeks, my lymph glands were so swollen.
i had it when i was 26 and, though mono was prob only one factor, my health steadily deteriorated and has never been the same.
hope you feel better soon.

I thought 5 months was about aveage? Most of my friends who had it were sick for around 3-6 months.

But it most likely was partially due to my lifestyle choices 8) I got it from my friend who was a tweaker... who knows who she got it from... but it got passed around my group of tweaker friends pretty quickly (sharing pipes). I went to get checked for it after my friend had it and about eight of us all got positives. But by the time I was diagnosed with it they said I had already had it for a couple months at least... so that may have had something to do with not getting better so quickly, who knows! :p

Thank you for everyone's help and responses!

I actually smoked a joint and was able to eat, and take my medication. I feel A LOT better now (oddly enough), and am able to sleep without being restless.

However, my body aches *a little* and my bed seems like a nice cloud. BTW: It was medicinal herb :)

Thank you again everyone. :)

YaY!!! glad you've been able to eat and rest... sorry to hear your still having body aches, but unfortunently thats to be expected :( keep us updated!!

Yeah Mia, I heard the same thing, around 3-6 mo. was average... I guess I just cant imagine being sick that long because I was lucky and get better in like 6 weeks. Yeah, im no doctor but I would think if you were sick for a few monthes and didn't know it, and you were still working your body the way you normally do (instead of resting) it probably prolonged it... im glad for your sake that its over with now though :) :)

I kind of had health on my side, im not so healthy now but I used to be for most of my life.. I ran 3-5 miles 5 days a week, ate super healthy, no red meat, didn't smoke... so I think that's built my body up pretty strong. Can't rely on the past forever though, gotta get back into good habits!!

I know EXACTLY how you feel!!!
recently, i'd been working, without sleep, and generally being a dumbass...... and what do ya know---- several symptoms of my mono (originally from about a year ago) came back!

from what i know, if you've had mono in the past or have struggled with lyme disease.... stressing out your body CAN bring back certain symptoms. it sucks.

just get some hardcore rest, take your vitamins, blablabla......
hope you feel better!!! :)
