Model Jailed Seven Years For Cannabis Possession

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- A model was sentenced to seven years jail by the Sessions Court here on Friday after she was found guilty of possessing 10 slabs of cannabis, last year.

Judge Muhammad Sekeri Mamat had down the sentence after finding the prosecution had proved its case beyond all reasonable doubt against accused Nor Azlina Noor Akhmad, 28.

He ordered the jail sentence to run from the date of her arrest on Jan 20, 2009 but exempted from a caning sentence because she is a woman.

In mitigation, defence counsel M.K Thas urged the court to impose as shorter shorter jail saying Nor Azlina was the sole breadwinner in the family and her mother needed to be cared for.

Nor Azlina was caught with the drugs weighing 76 grammes at No.12-11-12, Hartamas Regency Condo 1, Persiaran Dutamas, Off Jalan Duta, Sri Hartamas, at 11.30pm on Jan 20 last year.

She was convicted under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for maximum life imprisonment and not less that 10 strokes of the rotan.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Yong Ann Nee prosecuted.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 30-year-old former part-time model was sentenced to seven years’ jail for having 76gm of dried cannabis leaves.

Dressed in a black tudung and blouse, a handcuffed Nor Azlina Noor Akhmad was seen sobbing in the dock during the sentencing at the court complex here yesterday.

Sessions Court judge Mohamad Sekeri Mamat ordered her to serve her sentence from the date of her arrest on Jan 20 last year.

In mitigation, Nor Azlina’s lawyer M.K. Thas said his client had been in detention since her arrest.

“Her detention has not only disrupted her life but had also caused much difficulty to her mother,” he said of Nor Azlina, who is currently unemployed.

DPP Yong Ann Nee pointed out that the mandatory sentence for the offence was a minimum of five years’ jail and whipping.

Nor Azlina was charged with two counts of drug possession on Jan 30 last year but was acquitted of one charge and convicted for another last month.

She was found guilty of having in her possession 10 compacted pieces of dried cannabis leaves weighing 76gm at the Hartamas Regency Condominium 1 in Sri Hartamas at 11.30pm on Jan 20 last year.

Speaking to reporters later, Thas said his client would file an appeal against the conviction and sentence on Monday.

- In Holland, you have hard looks and a few yellings

I saw a video clip of caning. It is vicious, opening the skin and quivering muscle. I couldn't finish watching the clip. Other countries in SE Asia don't have caning but the prisonl terms are doubled.
