I hesitate to call this a "trip report", because it wasn't that intense. But I thought I'd just share my experience with Modafinil.

I am a stim-loving girl, and I have done lots of meth in the past. Now I've largely quit meth, and I do Adderall or coke.

But I wanted to try a "smart drug", so I got some modafinal, the Alertec brand. I read the info pamplet and did some research online. And based on what I read, I took one 100mg pill. The info said you could take two 100 mg pills, spaced throughout the day, but I tend to be a light-weight and I wanted to see how this could work for focus and concentration, not getting way high.

2:30pm - Took the pill.

3:30 - It started kicking in good. It did feel somewhat like Adderall - and yet not, exactly. It's not as physically energizing, although I notice when I get up and move around, there's that speedy feeling of physical effortlessness. I am not as chatty as I usually am on speed.

4:00 - Definitely feeling it a bit more. Some brief moments of rushy-ness. Slight tingling/numbness in my arms and hands, also slight itchyness. Both tolerable. Slight feeling of increased blood pressure, and the usual gastro-intestinal effects of speed.

5:00 - I'm still fine, but there is more vasoconstriction in my arms and hands, and still a slight feeling of elevated blood pressure. I'm surprised, given what I heard about there being no body load with this stuff. And I am still a trifle itchy, which I often am on speed.

8:45- I'm down. There was no crash, I just noticed I was hungry, and the tingling has mostly gone away.

Mentally, I can't say I felt "smarter". I did notice that I didn't seem to be making as many typos as I usually do when I take speed. There were no comedown jitters and I'm not irritable, so that's good. It's shorter-acting than even IR Adderall, so that could be handy if you wanted it.

Overall, though, I'm not sure what this has to recommend it over a low dose of Adderall.

Modafinil is a funny drug. I've always used the 'Modafil' brand which we get as 200mg pills. First time I had it, I had 200mg which was much much too strong. Whilst it definately keeps me awake, I find the body load quite uncomfortable, and the comedown for me is 100 times worse than base which is my regular stimulant. So now I stick to 50mg, which is a 1/4 of a pill... it still wakes me up and the body load and come down are a bit more bearable.

I've heard from a lot of people that 50mg is their ideal dosage too. Some people take up to 300mg though so it must vary a lot. Does anybody know the mechanism for modafinil or is it still up in the air?

thanks for the info, Nikki :)

mmm...for me, modafinil feels just like additional alertness with NO peripheral effects. It is strikingly close to having gotten more sleep the night before. However, at no point do I get any body-high, euphoria, or a crash when it wears off. Unfortunately, I usually need 200 mg.

I accidentally dosed 400 mg one (very drowsy) morning. Very oddly, it wasn't any more intense than 200 mg, but it lasted longer.

>>Does anybody know the mechanism for modafinil or is it still up in the air?>>

To my knowledge, there are currently a few different postulated mechanisms:
1. selective inhibition of reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine.
2. selective (and possibly downstream) activation of "glutaminergic circuits" and inhabition of GABA.
3. increased histamine release.
4. activation of neurons that take up orexin peptides (which could cause downstream release of dopamine and norepi' and increased histamine activity.

(much from wikipedia).

wouldn't increased histamine release cause more peripheral effects or is this histamine released in an area that has functionally an-isomorphic effects as what we normally think about histamine activation (sneezing, eyes watering, etc)?

Well (this is solely inference, not empirical evidence), I'm thinking that modafinil releases histamine solely in the brain, or some localized area therein, thus not effecting an allergy-type response.

It definately helps with concentration. Its nothing amazing, I think you still need to have an interest in what you're studying/writing about, but for me it keeps me awake enough to concentrate for longer periods of time. It also doesn't give you the OCD feeling that harder stimulants do.

I'm not sure about the method of action, but regarding the histamine release, from subjective experience I get a very very sniffly nose and increased itchy skin.

Ah well, I guess it won't be working as the cocaine replacement therapy I've been looking for... ;)

Lol, it sure doesn't work as my meth replacement therapy :( But it's probably much better for both of us!

Apparently a lot of academics are taking this drug.

Would it be good to study/write on?

Well, I was writing and working on my computer. I think I felt some slightly higher ability to concentrate. But slightly is the word - it wasn't like night and day, by any means.

I have found that with ample sleep, modafinil provides only mild enhancement of motivation and focus. Sans adequate sleep, however, modafinil is a god-send.

I tried to get some prescribed without success. My doctor told me that it only starts really working after a long period of time in the treatment of ADD (2 months). I think he doesn't really know what he's talking about.

I am one of those that seem to need a large dose (200mg upwards) to obtain reasonable effect. Tolerance definitely seems to build rapidly.

You would be correct. Your doctor has been misinformed or is lying to you on purpose. You can get the info online yourself but to sum it up modafinil is instant. Well, it takes aprox. 1 hour to begin its effects but there are no systemic "loading" properties yet associated with Provigil(modafinil). You can lengthen its effects as long as you continue the dosage and update as needed but them you'd be awake to 2 months. Also, I feel its important to mention that its not really gonna work for add/adhd. You asked for it for the wrong reasons(ie. I need vicodin because I have a cough). Try again only this time look up the reasons the drug is prescribed and often times they have an "off label uses" section that can guide you in the direction you need to go. I got some by saying that I lost all motivation and became sluggish due to my xanax script. Or say your on a swing shift schedule that will change each week and you run heavy or dangerous machines and need to be alert. Sorry to the mods if i went overboard.
