I just want to say - modafinil sucks ass. It's working so fucking well that I am now awake 24 hours, exhausted, but can't fall asleep! After some experimentation, it definitely does not get you high (well, hasn't worked for me anyway), and I personally cannot see any recreational value. I took some with ecstasy last week and didn't find it did anything to potentiate the effect of that either.
Therapeutically, as I said, it's way too effective right now. It's pissing me off. I'm on 500mgs a day (300mg morning, 200mg midday) as directed by my psychiatrist. I was on 400mg, but was still falling asleep during the day so he upped my dosage, saying that we could go as high as 800mg daily. Wtf?! That would keep a feckin zombie awake 24/7, never mind a normal person! (Or person with messed up sleeping patterns, we're not really normal, are we...)
I've been prescribed zolpidem (Stilnoct here, Ambien elsewhere) for my intermittent bouts of insomnia, but those things are seriously addictive. I mean, if I were to work off my multiple doctors' words of wisdom, I would be taking 500mg modafinil a day, plus 10mg Stilnoct a night. Pill-pushers much?! The drugs DO work, I'll give them that, but seriously, way to form a fucked-up habit. Great, thanks docs, you've really cured me.
Sorry for the rant, I'm just so fucking tired and the modafinil is keeping me awake and I've reliquinshed control of my sleeping tablets and benzos to my mum because I OD-ed twice on them in the last month so am obviously not responsible enough to keep them in my possession. (They are so much fun though!!) Hello dawn, hello new day, hello raging headache and bad temper and acute anxiety. Don't take pharms! Ugh.
Ok, for the purposes of making some kind of point in this post, I am going to take 400mg today instead of 500mg and try to work out my own dosage, rather than listening to the bloody psychiatrist, who, for all his training and apparent knowledge, has yet to demonstrate to me more than I have learned in three years of undergrad med school and some (admittedly considerable, but still amateur) reading up on psychology and drugs/pharms. I shall keep any and all interested in any epiphanies that happen to cross my path. Right, rant over, challenge on pharmaceutical companies! I don't need you
