A mixed martial arts fighter who allegedly gouged out another man's heart and eyes after drinking mushroom tea will stand trial in Northern California on a murder charge, the Times-Standard in Eureka, Calif., reported Wednesday.

Jarrod Wyatt, 26, also faces charges of aggravated mayhem and torture stemming from the grisly March killing of his 21-year-old friend Taylor Powell, after a Del Norte County Superior Court judge ruled Wednesday there was sufficient evidence to put the case before a jury.

Wyatt, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges, is due to reappear in court Friday for arraignment.

Powell was killed at a home in the coastal town of Requa, about 40 miles south of the Oregon board, early on March 21. He bled to death after his heart was removed from his body while still alive, according to his death certificate.

Deputies, responding to a 911 call, found Wyatt at the scene.

Another man had raised the alarm after allegedly seeing him naked and dripping with blood, standing over the mutilated body.

The witness told officials Wyatt had earlier been acting strangely after drinking “some kind of mushroom tea.”

Wyatt's MMA career is still in its earlier stages. According to The Daily Triplicate in Crescent City, Calif., he had won his first pro bout in October.

Crazy people shouldn't do psychedelics. The mushrooms may or may not have played a part in what happened, but I bet he was very mentally ill before using psychedelics. Considering that he was on mushrooms during one of the killings my guess would be that he took mushrooms, became psychotic over something and killed the guy. I've seen mushrooms make people violent before, but the people on them were people who shouldn't have been using psychedelics in the first place. Mental fitness is important for things like that.

Also, about the article- holy shit!

removal of the heart while the man was still alive.....wtf

I can't really figure that out. This guy must have been strong being in the MMA, but I can't see how someone could gouge out someone else's heart while they were still alive. Maybe if the guy was tied up or something? That's quite disgusting.

Why is no one blaming his Mixed Martial Arts training? Or maybe his sadistic father always beat the crap out of him when he was a kid? Or maybe his mother did not breast feed him? Or maybe it was too warm that day and they can blame "global warming".

"He didn't enter a plea on his initial court appearance because he appeared to still be under the effects of psychedelic mushrooms at the time."

Are we really going to believe that this guy was taken all the way to his first court appearance within 3-4 hours of committing the crime?

I smell ... oh, I don't know, datura? Something that does WAY more fucked-up things to a person than psilocybin does, and clearly lasts longer. Plenty of plants (and therefore potential teas) out there fit this description.

EDIT: Never mind, there's a detailed trip report (of sorts) here: http://www.contracostatimes.com/california/ci_15174443

Some fucked up shit, yo.

You have to admit that the conclusion that the psychoactive substance he was on had something to do with the outbreak of violence is a fairly logical one. I'm sure he training and mental illness were also related. But to completly deny the fact that whatever drug he was on could have played a part in it is ridiculous. This is exactly why psychedelics should only be used by people who are psychologically fit.

In Bernal Diaz de Castillo's account of Cortez' bizarre conquest of Mexico, he recounts the many sacrifices he witnessed. While the book was definitely a propaganda piece of 1525, it's widely accepted in the academic community that standard Aztec sacrificial practices, which culminated in the removal of the heart and the amputation of the limbs, were perfromed on living victims. There are quite a few literal Aztec pictorial documents that depict the practice.

My comment has nothing to do with whatever-the-fuck was wrong with this guy (obviously not mushrooms or MMA), but the removal of the heart from living victims was a procedure which had been practiced and performed for centuries. But I kinda doubt this guy had spent years as a practicing acolyte in a secret Aztec temple.

There are so many far-fetched details in that story: the girlfriend hanging out during all of this; torture and sex in the kitchen interspersed with casual chat about surfing; the detective's name: Ed Fleshman. It's so sensationalist and far-fetched, you couldn't write it.

And the prosecutor is presenting the removal of the face as evidence that Wyatt was acting in a calculated, logic manner and wasn't experiencing a psychotic break. Removing the face (on top of the body-part cooking and live heart-removal) was an act of "extreme, callous indifference." OK, extreme I get, but indifferent? Now I'm definitely scared of the prosecutor too. I can't fathom the mind that could view this fucking insane, chaotic horrorfest as an example of logical and pre-meditated murder.

I assumed that he used a knife or something.

I sort of meant how did the dude who lost his heart let him do that. I'd imagine there'd be a great struggle if someone tried to take your heart out, especially if they had a knife.

i assume there was a struggle, but when one man stabs another with a knife a couple hundred times they tend to go down
:p

^I would assume that he was not quite dead from the wounds when the heart-ripping occurred. Incapacitated, perhaps, but not yet dead.
