I am on the fentanyl patch 12mcg and norco 7.5 for breakthrough pain. I've only been on the patch for a week. I am also prescribed xanax for anxiety but have not taken it since I started the patch because I was nervous to mix the 2. I have been having really bad anxiety attacks, since I have a tolerance to opiates and benzos should I be okay? Is there a way to safely take the two with less risk?

We can't give you that info. We don't know your metabolism, how you eat, how much you exercise, whether you have asthma or any other minor illness that could cause problems.

Call your doctor and set up an appointment. I can't in my right mind tell you "it's ok, go for it" As you know, these two drugs specifically have a pretty regular occurrence of finding their patients or abusers dead.

Sorry to hear about the anxiety :( but I cannot suggest the xanax.

Did the same doctor prescribe it? As D_Ew mentioned, it's a very dangerous combo and the safety depends on a lot of factors.. however, 12.5ug fent is a very low dose, so you may be OK using it in very small quantities (ie. <0.5mg), but check with your doctor first.

nAON and D_Ew are both right. While you're on both a low dose of fentanyl and a medium dose of Xanax...mixing opiates and benzos together is dangerous, mixing fentanyl and benzos together is 10x more dangerous just due to fentanyl's incredible potency and steep dose-response curve.

if you're really wanting to take it for legitimate anxiety problems - try taking 0.5 mg of xanax, perhaps even lower - 0.25 if you can and see how you react to it.

what was your usual dose regarding opiates and benzos before you started the patch?

Also, some feel this is true, some don't. It is up to who is taking it, but, opiates can make benzos have a stronger effect, and vice versa. If you do wake up terrified with anxiety, I also would suggest starting as absolutely low as you can. It seems you will probably combine the two eventually, I am glad you are careful, but it is clear you will have to figure out what ends up working for YOU regardless of what the doctors say (take what they say with a grain of salt)

I agree, if anxiety is crippling you then the pain meds aren't going to be effective at their job - in fact you'll feel more emotional pain which I think is a hell of a lot worse than physical.

Talk to your doctors about it again, perhaps there is an alternative. Quitting cold turkey from the xanax was also probably not the best of ideas. How long had you been taking it prior to the patches?

I only took a xanax maybe once or twice a week. At the most it was a whole 2 mgs. I had been on it for maybe 3 months. I know it isn't safe to stop xanax when you are taking it daily but I figured since it wasn't very often my body wasn't completely dependent on it. I have taken opiates and benzos together at safe doses. I know harm reduction wise that isn't the best thing to do but I needed them for medical reasons. The only opiates I am nervous to take benzos with are methadone and the patch because they stay in your system forever. Unfortunately extended release pain medication wise I don't have a lot of options since people who have gastric bypass don't absorb them well, which is why the patch was chosen. As needed medication by itself wasn't as effective. The patch is working very well so if possible I would like to stay on it. I will discuss with the doctors about the xanax though.

I believe fentanyl is removed from the body rather quickly, I know methadone is a long one, but I think fentanyl is only like... a day??

I usually feel it working for about 2 and half days. Usually by day 3, I can tell it's time to change the patch because my pain level goes back up. You maybe be right I'm not sure. I know Fentanyl by IV has a very short half life.

Your doc would have to monitor you close. Tbph i have severe anxiety so i no whats its like but i would soldier on and not take the xanax. Especially with fent. Fent is known to cause more respitory depression then any other opiate/opioid.

it all boils down to this...
downer+downer=death

Maybe not the first time or second. Fuck u might get away with it for 15 years but one day ur gonna od mixing downers like benzos and opis.

i know this thread is a little old...but i was wondering if anyone had any info- if being on the fentanyl patch & taking niacin, would make it more potent? i UTSE, but came up empty handed. any input would be awesome. not trying to get "high" just trying to be safe. thx <3

ps- i know the thread is about fent & xanax, but i couldn't fin another thread i could relate this question to. :?

So in that case you would make your own thread, instead of reviving an old one.
