Mixing benzo's and alcohol is a bad combo overall, every time I've done it I've regretted it. I would usually just drink the booze while popping the pills and black out, every time waking up not knowing what I had done the previous night.
I don't think it really matters if you wait 30 minutes or whatever to pop the pill or start drinking, the combo is still going to affect you regardless. Be careful.

Take either when ever, add more while you drink.
Just make sure you know your body, example. A good cut off point is like 2mg xanax with 6 shots or less... you should be done after that.
There are people who take like 6mg+ xanax and 10 shots or more... that's where it becomes dangerous.

I do it both ways. I usually dump my temazepam(15mg) in my drink of choice unless I'm planning on just taking shots then I dose a half hour or so ahead of time. As already mentioned mixing them is dangerous, I personally know someone who has died from mixing Xanax and booze.
Edit: I also want to add that when I do mix them I never leave my apartment. It's something I do 2-3 hours before going to bed.

If you like walking around barely even conscious then go right on ahead. This combo is nothing but a shitfaced one. I've Lost many a personal item(like shades, rings, belts, etc.) from booze and benzos.
IMO 20mg of valium with 2-3 beers is really enjoyable and 1-2mg of Xanax with 1-3 drinks is usually where it's fun. Any more just makes the combo ugly.

You take them at the same time. The problem with this combo, as has been said, is that it will knock you out and cause you to black out and wake up tomorrow wondering what happened.
