Heroin missed shot...of blood?

A good friend of mine just started shooting in the past couple days, so obviously her technique is pretty bad and I always have to do it for her. Just now she called me and asked if I could come over and shoot her up (she lives down the street, so its not a big deal for me to run over there and do it and then leave), but I was busy and I told her I would be there in 30 minutes.

So this impatient bitch decides to try to do it herself, and apparently had difficulty staying in the vein. She told me she registered each time she got in a new vein, and then kept falling out again. Eventually she ended up with about 40 units of dope and 40 units of blood. She then injected that in the crook of her arm. She insists that she did not miss, but the area around the site is red which makes me think all that blood is sitting under her skin (but there is no swelling or "bubble" like I always get on a miss). The redness is about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide. She says it isn't sore like a missed shot either.

I have her applying heat to the injection site. What do you guys think? What should she do? Is there any definitive way I can tell if she missed? Is it more dangerous to miss a shot of blood than of just heroin?

Wow, tell her to hop in the shower, grab a washcloth and keep moist heat on that spot. I have a topical analgesic gel that is meant for equestrian use(horses skin) that has menthol, and other blood-flow increasing natural agents in it. When I was a n00b at IV'ing and when I would miss a small amount I would always rub plenty of this gel around and on the injection site. It would almost be gone and not hurt NEARLY as bad the next day. Sometimes I think that shit saved my ass from abcesses and potential trips to the hospital and some crazy explanation to my parents.

If she has any extra money, I'd get my ass over to an animal supply store(my grandparents owned one, so thats how I got the gel analgesic) and pick up something similar. If you're in the city, I'd try a pharmacy n see what they've got. I'd rather spend a few bucks on a little prevention than an abcess and a trip to the hospital.

Let us know how ya'll do. Hopefully she'll be alright. I'll certainlly keep her in my hopes. It would be awful to lose a limb over a little impatience.

Sometimes you'll get a rash from shooting, it's just a histamine reaction. The skin puffs up a little, and usually comes in random patterns, and skips around, not a perfect circle like a missed shot would be.

Taking a small dose of diphenhydramine will help make it go down faster, although stay low because of the interaction with the dope. If you have something better such as hydroxyzine that would do the trick to.

I used to have it all the time, and my girlfriend too, it's usually no big deal. Sometimes just from the dope being on the tip of the needle it can trigger this reaction. Depends on a persons sensitivity to histamine reactions.
 
That's not what it is. I have two friends (twins) who get that really bad and I know what it looks like.

Anyways I called her and she said it has cleared up, but it now hurts like a missed shot except there is still no swelling. So I got her applying a hot pack thing to it. This guy I know uses burn cream (vitamin E I think) for his missed shots and says it works wonders...anyone tried that?

I use vitamin E oil for my track marks and scars, I cut them out of gel caps I get for free. I don't see it doing anything for the pain, but if there is skaring/bruising it will definitely help.
 
I used to get these weird patterns under my skin when I first started shooting dope. it wasn't missed either, cause it would happen when experienced users shot me up. It kind of looked like the veins turned a different color or something, hard to describe.
 
^ Yea I had a thread about that. My shot that had blood in it that I saved clotted up I had to refilter and IM it (pretty stupid)

I'd really like to know I've got the same thing for a week now.
It's kinda freaking me out. No pain, no other ailments just that pattern.

^ that I believe is the histamine reaction. it goes away in a little bit, right?
 
^ No it does not go away in a lil' bit, like a histamine reaction & it's not itching. It doesn't hurt, it's not hot, no raised skin, no fever, just red and white splotches (pattern, in the words of Znegative). Started out as a missed shot, heat was applied, actually I think the compress was possibly too hot. Massaged and compress ,bump gone down, practically gone. The red has started to fade to like a darkened skin color, The white is going back to skin color. As -Z said, it's hard to describe.
 
I can remember one time when I was just beginning to shoot, I KNOW I missed in the crook of my arm, and it was basically identical to your description. I think it could be possible that since she was shooting in the crook, there is quite a large 'space' there to hold fluid, if she had missed. It wouldn't get raised and swollen quite as severely as say, missing on your hand or something.

It is also possible that she did in fact get lucky, hit the vein, and her skin is just red from a histamine release, or simply just irritated/sore from jabbing herself so many times. Who knows.
 
Did you ever figure out what the pattern was Znegative? It's going away sooo slowly. I'm going to the exchange on tues. because I can't figure what it is, how long would yours last?
 
I had a similar reaction to morphine often. it would kind of look like welps or gives. usually a miss makes a bubble of some kind.
 
what's IM? Yes, blood in a rig is BAD! When I think back to things I'd do just to get that shot in!! Lotta misses at first, but lemme tell ya cocaine is the WORST!! over & over again!! I'm pottery sure it caused the bulk of damage to my veins!! There were also a handful of times I was glad my arm was numb almost to my shoulder!! Had I not missed all that I probably would've died!!
 
the thing about registering and drawing back blood and slipping out is that the blood will start to coagulate and will clogg your syringe and literally you wont be able to push down on the plunger.

the rednessi s probably phlebitis from poking around too much, i dont think you have anything to worry about
