First time here and first time searching on the internet. Short of it is, I missed for the first time ever and the circumference of my elbow is swollen, I cannot extend it, it is painful and it is warm and pink. It has been 2 days. I know this must be an abscess but there is no "head" on it and I am kind of freaking out however I am trying to avoid any doctor at all for privacy purposes. The doc did prescribe Keflex for 7 days (for a false complaint) and I am going to get that tonight. I have been puting hot packs on it as much as I can. Has anyone else lived with this? I do not feel comfortable poking it. Please help!

Welcome to Bluelight inspireme. New Member Introductions is a forum that allows you to introduce yourself to others on the board rather than to ask specific questions such as this as there are many other forums on Bluelight that serve that purpose. With that said, I'm going to move your thread to Other Drugs, but feel free to come back to NMI to make an intro thread. :)

I would highly recommend that you seek medical attention in this matter. We're not doctors here and therefore cannot give you medical advice. Please, PLEASE go to a doctor as soon as you're able. I wish you the best. <3

It doesn't sound good.. and without being able to see it first hand, nobody here is going to be able to give you any clear cut advise with 100% certaintiy.. unfortunately (and I know you don't want to hear this) only a doctor can do that.

Check out the IV Complications thread in my signature.. there's a lot of good info there.

We get a lot of these types of questions... however, our recommendations are pretty much the same. A general missed shot, if given a hot compress right away followed by an icepack to kill the swelling, should subside a good amount in 24 hours. What you are describing sounds worse than a simple miss and though you may not see a head on it right now, it could still be, and probably is infected.

A doctor is going to be your best bet and only way to guarantee anything. I'll leave this open for the time being but you're going to get the same responses from people.

You can have an infection without it being an abscess with a head on it. It does sound infected.

Of course the best idea is to be honest with a doctor about the cause of your issues. It's hard for them to treat your properly if they don't know the truth. For example, there is a chance it could be something other than or in addition to an infection (hitting a nerve or artery etc can cause complications for example) or there may be things they can do in addition to antibiotics or may be specific antibiotics (or dosing regimens) that would be best, etc.

If you are not willing to see a doctor and be truthful, then all you can really do is continue with the hot compresses and take the Keflex.

Keflex dosage info says:
The recommended dose of Keflex for most types of bacterial infections is 250 mg to 1000 mg, taken four times a day for 7 to 14 days. For chronic or more serious infections, your healthcare provider may continue treatment for a longer period of time.

If it doesn't improve soon please seriously see a doctor. Obviously you should be seeking medical attention anyway, but if you're not going to listen to us at least definitely seek help if the Keflex doesn't quickly clear it up or if it gets worse. Things can turn very serious if you don't deal with it early on.

I started the Keflex and hot packs helped a lot last night. It is still swollen and red but I can bend my arm more and it is not as tender as it was. I have also been taking 800 mg of Ibuprofen every 4 hours. I am going to ride this out for the time being, other than the lecture I would get from the doctor, its the insurance claim and records that will not remain private due to the good ole buddy system my employer has going on.

Here's a funny thing.....the person I was with told me he was swollen too from his shot. Both of us missing? I should have known when it was funky looking to me......

I dont get it.. avoid the doctor for privacy purposes? Go to a different doctor from your G.P.

Or don't... because a dirty look and feeling a little embarrased is definitely not worth keeping your arm.

Keflex is nowhere nearly strong enough. You probably need clarithromyacin or fluroquinalone (Noroxin).

Please visit a doctor. "riding out an abcess" is the start of so many of the case studies I've posted. And in every one of those case studies, basically time was the issue. If you're still going to ignore our advice, trace the red swollen skin with a pen and note whether the red area shrinks over a period of 12 hours. If there is no decrease (ie no change, or larger area), go to the ER ASAP.

Yeah, that was my worry too. You can't just go into a doctor and say you have an earache or something and get an antibiotic and assume it will work for an infected injection site. It's not like all antibiotics are the same or dosing regimens for different things are the same.

Thanks for your concern! Update: The area went down, no sign of any infection, however now my fav spot is no longer usable. What a dummy I am!
