i am starting this noradrenergic and specific serotonergic (NaSS) antidepressant tomorrow evening and i have some background info and questions:

-i just stopped taking 20mg of citalopram (i was put on it for anxiety not depression) every morning for the past 6 months for anxiety because it did not help as much as i would have liked and my doc won't prescribe me benzos.

-i was put on mirtazapine as a substitute to see how it would effect me compared to citalopram and it's also because my doc won't give me benzos for anxiety b/c of "drug user" on my chart.

-has anyone had experience with this anti-d for anxiety or depression? how did it work for you?

-what does the noradrenergic aspect of this do in addition to the SSRI effects i experienced on citalopram?

-what kind of drug is this exactly? i was told it's not a SSRI but very similar. i'm not on it for depression so i'm still planning on using alcohol and opiates recreationally with it as i was able to handle the drugs fine on citalopram.

any imput would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

It worked well for me. I was on it for over a year. @ 15mg/day, it did a good job of reducing my anxiety and depression in general. I found it a little too sedating to take during the day, so I took in before bedtime. I slept wonderfully for the first time in many years. My dose was increased to 30mg/day after being on it for a while to reduce the sedation and increased appetite. The noradrenergic effects kick in a little more at higher doses.

I have been on Remeron (Mirtazapine) for the past 10 months and have just recently been tapering down from it as I do not need to be on it anymore. My background is that I was put on it, along with ativan, for depression due to a death in the family and extreme anxiety that I have been battleing for years. I can tell you that it is an amazing drug for depression and anxiety!!! I started out at 15mg at bedtime but had it increased to 45mg (the highest prescribed dose) at bedtime for a few reasons. 1 being that at any dose under 45mg you get an isane craving for food. I mean like smoking pot type munchies. I gained 15 lbs in the 1st 2 weeks. It also makes you very sleepy, which is why you usually are directed to take it at bedtime. When taken at 45mg it is believed to cause more serotonin and norepinephrine to be released, which may result in less "sleepy drowsy like feeling" and, for me, actually gave me more energy and supressed the munchies to a decent point. It may not work like that for everybody but I was very happy with the 45mg dose effects.

Overall IMO this drug is 1 of the best, if not the best drugs for anxiety and depression. It has way less side effects than the common prescribed SSRIs and you take it once a day at bedtime, in most cases. It also is proven to be the most less likely Anti-depressant to casue sexual impotence in males as a lot of them do. And nobody needs that on top of whatever else is going.

So far all good, only sleepiness and craving for sugar have been the side effects. I've been taking it for 9 days and I think I'm already noticing some reduction of anxiety. As I said, I'm on it for anxiety and not depression. Also this drug seems to kick ass with any potent IV opiate/opioid and/or marijuana/any benzo. I've been off my old medicine (citalopram) for 11 days and I already have more energy during the day and increased sex drive.

also, this drug works great for depression (i've been on 30mg for over a year) but if you're still abusing IV opioids, don't expect it to do much for you.

What do you mean by your second statement though? That IV opioids won't work or his depression won't be fixed up?

I used remeron for about 6 months while I was actively addicted to alcohol, xanax, and opioids...and my depression didn't get any better 'cause I felt like shit from all the constant drug abuse.

Right, I see what you mean and I agree that whilst being treated for depression or anxiety it's probably a good idea to lay off the drugs for a while.

also, this drug works great for depression (i've been on 30mg for over a year) but if you're still abusing IV opioids, don't expect it to do much for you.

i'm using it for anxiety. it's not like panic attack anxiety i don't even need benzos (not that i could get them prescribed because my psychiatrist knows i use drugs). i'm hoping it will give me that very light sedative/relaxing effect as well as a mood boost that i didn't get from citalopram. so far it's doing the job.

I'm currently prescribed 30mg of mirtazapine (been taking it for 3 months) for depression and anxiety. My anxiety has signiicantly reduced but the depression hasn't changed. My psychiatrist will probably want to up my dose to 45mg (appointment tomorrow) but I stopped taking them a week ago because of intense agitation, restlessness and very low mood.

I also stopped taking olanzapine at the same time and am starting to feel a lot better so I don't really know which drug may of been causing the agitation etc.

I was prescribed this as an ancillary sleeping pill to go with my ambien. Didnt do much for my anxiety or depression, but i was on the 15mg. Quit taking it because it didnt seem to do much for me.

So at what dose or time using them does things change on them? like the munchies and sedating. So i wondering more means less sedation and more energy?

Ofcourse, each Antidepressant effects each individual in an entirely different way sometimes...
But, My very brief experience with Mirtazapine (3 days) were not pleasant...
The first night I took it I had not slept the prior evening, so took it around 2-3am and went straight to bed. Was asleep within a matter of minutes, no time for it's [side] effects to become apparent.

The second night, I took it around 8pm. As time went on there was non, or very minimal, of the promised sedative effect and I began to feel increasingly suicidal.
It actually evaporated my fear of death, which had been a big issue for me for a long, long time. I was talking to my friend on Skype, saying to her that I wish she could forget me so I could just forget me so I could "go".

The third night was exactly the same. I wanted to take all the Codeine and Temazepam (which would have been enough to stop me breathing) I had and just drift off to a sleep that I would not return from.
If it wasn't for my extreme love I have for my friends I would not be here now.

The forth night that I was supposed to take it... It was almost like I felt compelled to do so. I really have no idea why either... My friend convinced me not to take it and I had non of the feelings of the prior nights.

Now, the whole point of me typing all this out is because Suicidal Ideation was not listed as a potential side effect, nor was it mentioned at all by my Psychiatrist (who is a bit of a fucking idiot, to put it lightly, and should go back to do her Phd. again plus gain a little bit of understanding of the types of people and their conditions she is prescribing meds for).

I had to file a "Yellow Card" as they are called here in the UK, which are a form to report side effects of medicines to the "Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency" (MHRA).

So, to conclude, wasn't too great for me really But I'm glad it has helped you RainingDownOxy

is mirtazapine really an anti-histamine? i guess that makes sense cause it always makes me tired. i've always taken it AFTER my opiates before bed. am i missing out on another potentiator? is it worth taking before shooting dope like benadryl and tagamet are?

I too was switched from citalopram (either 20 or 40 mg) to mirtazapine (15 mg).
It, like citalopram, didn't do shit for my anxiety, and I wasn't depressed, but I noticed that it improved my sleep a great deal.

What kind of a medication is mirtazapine? A 'heterocyclic' anti-depressant that does a buncha different stuff in the brain, including potent anti-histaminergic activity, and downstream increase in NE and 5ht.

yeah i heard it had some anti-cholinegic effects from the doctor. Have not tried it with opiates. But at dose's over 60mg i think its a bad drug; strange pains behind my eye and temples crushing feeling got worse was it the gabapentin and phenibut? but it got worse after having some catapres this was all nearly 24 hours later.

Think I'd just use those Opiates to see it through..

I was on it for 3 months until it gave me the effects of being electrocuted with any sudden movements i made.. was fucking horrible. Was supposed to help with my insomnia aswel? i never got tired off it at all, thou not even a strong dose of ambien will put me to bed. Bah i hate anti depressants in general, but i cant argue that they help allot of people.. they just dont work well for me.. i wish they did.. but i get bad side effects from them all
