Mirtazapine 15mg knocked me out cold!

Hi, I have been treated for depression on and off for several years now. First Citalopram then Fluoxetine. I had to quit both of these due to the sexual side effect of ED. My sex drive was fine but my man kept quiting half way through a job! Other than that I had no other noticeable side effects. I was prescribed Tramadol for pain which I found cleared up my depression using 100mg a day and no sides except taking a little longer to cum during sex. I didn't like taking tram long term so whet back to the gp and she put me on venlafaxine. This just zombied me even on only 7.5mg twice a day I was brain dead. So I quit venlafaxine and went back to the GP. Now the GP prescribed me Mirtazapine due to low sexual side effect with it. He started me on 15mg a day to take at night.

So first night I took the 15mg Mirtazapine at 7.30pm. My normal bed time is 11.30 but by 9pm I was out cold until 8am the next day when the alarm got me up. I took the kids to school and could barely stay awake so drank a coffee and a red bull but fell asleep at 9.30 and never got up again until 12.30. Then I was just completely sedated despite taking 3 more red bulls and 3 sudo ephedrine (sudofed) until I went to bed that night without taking another pill. Next day I still felt drowsy but could manage it.

I expected to be tired due to the high H1 blockage but that was ALOT stronger than 75mg of diphenhydramine I used to take to help me sleep. I want to stick with this one a give it a good try but I have a full time job in IT so I need to be awake and abel to think. What can I do to help the sedation? Is this much sedation normal? I never expected it to be stranger than Diphenhydramine sleeping pills!

Also for 3-4 years until about 10 years ago I took 3-5 ecstasy pills of various strength. Has this had an effect?

Sorry for the long post but I need help with this and thought some background may help.

Give it a couple of weeks and you should have adjusted to sleep inducing effects. I've had friends who have been on Mirtazapine, and they all said it would knock them out to begin with, and then after a while they would get used to it, although weight gain was also a problem.

I have some 30mg Mirtazapine tablets which I use for sleep when I'm going through Benzo withdrawal, and suprisingly they don't really do a lot, especially if I take them on consecutive nights. :(

Also in comparison to Diphenhydramine, most things seem strong. Diphenhydramine is a weak sleep aid IMO/IME.

I'm up to 45 mg mirtazapine, from 30 over the summer. You will get used to it after taking it regularly. I like it because I can fall asleep fairly quickly. Trouble is, I can't stay asleep more than 4-5 hours and find myself wide awake.

I just re-read my post and I meant to put I took 3-5 ecstacy pills a week for several years.
Thanks for the replys. I can't even take 15mg and be able to function the following day. Aside a full time job I have 3 kids as well. Is there a way to offset the sedation? Oddly tramadol helps but I want to get off those not take them as well.
