The Michigan Board of Pharmacy was issued an imminent danger notification Wednesday from the Michigan Department of Community Health’s Director James Haveman to begin the process of making the synthetic drug phenethylamine illegal.

On Wednesday, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Acting Director Steve Arwood said, “Today, the Michigan Board of Pharmacy acting with the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs initiated the emergency rule making process which will make a new class of synthetic drugs identified as phenethylamine drugs illegal in Michigan by classifying them as Schedule 1 controlled substances.

“This decision was primarily based on an imminent danger notification from the Department of Community Health acting on recommendations from Michigan State Police, local health officers and law enforcement agencies,” Arwood said.

Eastern Michigan University senior and construction major Chad Wilson said people should “stick to the real thing” if they are going to do drugs.

“I’ve never heard of people ripping each other’s faces off after smoking a joint,” Wilson said.

Phenethylamine is an organic compound that has qualities similar to amphetamines. It has been correlated with many psychological and physiological side effects that include schizophrenia, hallucinations, disorientation and seizures among others. Police have reported some users of this drug as physically violent toward law-enforcement and EMS personnel.

The new drug has caused 19 emergency room visits in Michigan and five fatalities nationwide.
The imminent danger notification that was sent by the MDCH allows the Michigan Board of Pharmacy to create an emergency rule that would place phenethylamine on the controlled substance list and become illegal to state residents.

“With this class of synthetic drugs in Michigan, the state is doing all that it can to ban these substances as soon as possible,” Haveman said in the release.

Haven said because these drugs are being sold under a wide variety of names and packaging forms, parents are highly encouraged to talk to their children and call the Michigan Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 about any concerns they may have.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "recreational"? The more things they schedule, the stranger and more dangerous the RC's will become....Where does it end?

This sounds like the article writer totally missed what actually is going on... it would make more sense if it was a bill to ban *substituted phenethylamines* like the cathinones, 2c-series et cetera... it would also capture the "bath salt" type bastard stimulants made from random substitutions on amphetamine/PEA/cathinone.

PEA isnt even recreational w/o a MAO inhibitor. And some things like e.g. chocolate contain natural PEA anyway...

There's that other article on something being marketed as "crack" in New Zealand....they're claimng that this is the active ingredient in that, but it doesn't make sense, people won't come back and buy something that essentially does nothing, usually! I'm thinking there's a bit of a mix-up going on and there's more than meets the eye with both of these stories...

Are they trying to ban any penethylamine related compound?

The author of this article clearly doesn't understand what he's writing about.

they say " new class of drugs" I guess they are just wrongly calling most RC's phenethylamine. Like the 2c-x/25xnbome/cathinones. Curious as to whether the bill itself says specifics.

I've heard hordenine & pea is active, but i doubt its much more than that.

Why don't they quit euphemising their agenda, and say all drugs are illegal, unless we say they aren't. If you synth a new drug, you are breaking the law without the drug gestapo's approval. But that would be a self correcting fuckup on their part, as they would sink all our public funds on their war on civil rights (i refuse to call it the puffy version, "drug war"), or at least more than they already are.

This save the children, save us from ourselves bullshit is getting out of hand. All were doing is making bigger problems than the legitimate ones we are trying to fix. Its going to sink into these neanderthals skulls eventually, prob when the affects of their illogicality affect their lives personally. The 18th amendment introduced a psychological cancer into our society, and in turn the rest of the world when they by and large followed suit in the decades to pass and ever increasing drug regulation.

But i have to remember, its just the freak-show. Don't take part, just watch the audience and freaks deviate farther from reality, and do everything you can to stay close enough to observe, but not get pulled in.

We'll see how they word the law, since they obviously can't make PEA itself illegal. I imagine that if it was easy to pass a law like this, it already would have been done. PEA substitutions are hardly a new thing.

I believe a general drug classification law is already drafted. Michigan's procedure for scheduling new substances is extra-legislative. The Board of Pharmacy has full control over it. Whenever they want to ban a substance, they ban it. Several states have adopted this system.

It goes without saying that if all PEA derivatives are somehow made into schedule 1 controlled substances, many OTC pharmaceuticals and nutritional supplements will become felonious. I imagine the manufacturers of these products will have something to say about that.

On the other hand, cops are not chemists, so I imagine GNC pre-workout formulas will not be messed with. Gas stations selling products labelled OMGTrippinBallz are another story.

in high(2-4g) doses, PEA is recreational. But I find that it could be useful for helping people go to sleep when they aimlessly surf the web for hours on end
